Book Synopsis The Moon Is Following Me by : Cecil Browne
Download or read book The Moon Is Following Me written by Cecil Browne and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2010 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of short stories recalls an era when the village was the centre of life in the Caribbean island of St Vincent and the Grenadines. Nostalgic, but not sentimental, these stories are based on real events and relate the experiences of a range of characters striving to make a name for themselves; they are people in search of a larger stage. The title story, The Moon is Following Me, paints a picture of school life as it was in the seventies. It features a headmaster who is fond of rum and a teacher who works for half a day only, but it is essentially a story of young love and hope. Take for Two relates the story of Archie, who, on the night he is leaving on a contract to America, is asked by his sweetheart for a ‘special dress’ as a present. When he returns three months later with a wedding dress, he is met with disappointment.Spanish Ladies is based on the murder of a 17-year-old by a preacher. Even now, from this distance, it is painful to recall. The fourth story tells of an unlikely love, brought about by music, and the final story, Taste For Freedom, is an attempt to recreate the early years after the Emancipation. The stories are at times funny and unsettling but rarely sad. These are ‘real’ people, individual, ambitious, mad, vengeful, naïve: they are like villagers everywhere.

Download or read book The Cadillac That Followed Me Home written by Christopher W. Cummings and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2006-09-21 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cadillac V-16 was conceived in secrecy in the middle of the Roaring Twenties, when incomes were rising, prosperity seemed endless and the car business was beginning to break from a traditional emphasis on function over form. But by the time the Cadillac V-16 reached showrooms in 1930, the nation was falling headlong into the Great Depression, and it soon became a rare relic of the boom before the crash. That is why in the mid-1960s, when Christopher Cummings was an adolescent car enthusiast, the oldest Cadillac V-16s were a dream just out of reach. This memoir tells the story of a boy who grew up loving cars, learned everything he could about them, and acquired quite a few impressive models for himself, while always looking forward to the day he would, by surprising circumstance, find the automobile of his dreams. Early chapters reveal the adventure Cummings underwent renovating his first car at age 13. Over the course of his teenage years he would work to acquire three classic Cadillacs: a 1941 Cadillac Series 7523 seven-passenger touring sedan, a 1941 Cadillac Series 61 coupe, and a 1931 Cadillac Series 355A Fleetwood Cabriolet. Later chapters recount the painstaking effort he put into renovating and maintaining those coveted vehicles. The story culminates with Cummings' unexpected acquisition of the car that earned the motto "Standard of the World," the 1930 V-16 Imperial Sedan limousine. In all, this memoir bears witness to an elegant sample of the best that the Classic era of automotive history had to offer.

Book Synopsis Journey to Wholeness by : Sandy Smyth
Download or read book Journey to Wholeness written by Sandy Smyth and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2009-03 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: JOURNEY TO WHOLENESS THROUGH THE CREATIVE ARTS Sandy Smyth Theological Studies, Yale Divinity School; Religious Studies, Sacred Heart University; Art Education, Elmira College. At first, I ran by the creek; At last, the creek ran through me. Wholeness, I believe, is the fleeting state of being in which we experience the joy of Heaven on Earth; moments in which we are in complete harmony with God, ourselves and creation entire to experience what I call, "Paradise Within." The consistent religious experience for me is how close I feel to God and wholeness when steeping in Silence, surrounded by natural beauty, particularly in the woods and at the seashore of Connecticut (where I live with my husband, two French bulldogs and a cat). I also believe that when we are the most broken, the creative process--because it connects us to the loving Spirit deep within--can bring us into wholeness through art-making. By art-making, I mean making poems, stories, paintings, sculptures, dances, plays, music and the like. Expressing feelings through art restores harmony within. Art is a medium for communication of feelings, self discovery and healing. On the blank pages of this book, I encourage you to share your own reflections on wholeness or brokenness as you read the poems. The questions that accompany the poems are to stimulate your thinking and creativity and to inspire you to do your own art inside or outside these pages.
Book Synopsis Brothers in the Beloved Community by : Marc Andrus
Download or read book Brothers in the Beloved Community written by Marc Andrus and published by Parallax Press. This book was released on 2021-11-16 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The “beautiful and wise account” of Martin Luther King Jr. and Zen Buddhist Thich Nhat Hanh, who “gave greater life to all of us through their remarkable friendship and shared vision of nonviolence” (Joan Halifax, author of Standing at the Edge). The day after Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in 1968, Thich Nhat Hanh wrote a heartbroken letter to their mutual friend Raphael Gould. He said: "I did not sleep last night. . . . They killed Martin Luther King. They killed us. I am afraid the root of violence is so deep in the heart and mind and manner of this society. They killed him. They killed my hope. I do not know what to say. . . . He made so great an impression in me. This morning I have the impression that I cannot bear the loss." Only a few years earlier, Thich Nhat Hanh wrote an open letter to Martin Luther King Jr. as part of his effort to raise awareness and bring peace in Vietnam. There was an unexpected outcome of Nhat Hanh's letter to King: The two men met in 1966 and 1967 and became not only allies in the peace movement, but friends. This friendship between two prophetic figures from different religions and cultures, from countries at war with one another, reached a great depth in a short period of time. Dr. King nominated Thich Nhat Hanh for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1967. He wrote: "Thich Nhat Hanh is a holy man, for he is humble and devout. He is a scholar of immense intellectual capacity. His ideas for peace, if applied, would build a monument to ecumenism, to world brotherhood, to humanity." The two men bonded over a vision of the Beloved Community: a vision described recently by Congressman John Lewis as "a nation and world society at peace with itself." It was a concept each knew of because of their membership within the Fellowship of Reconciliation, an international peace organization, and that Martin Luther King Jr. had been popularizing through his work for some time. Thich Nhat Hanh, Andrus shows, took the lineage of the Beloved Community from King and carried it on after his death.
Book Synopsis It's All My Fault! by : Michael C. Ferringer
Download or read book It's All My Fault! written by Michael C. Ferringer and published by Dorrance Publishing. This book was released on 2023-08-03 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About the Book This is a story of a boy–spending his first grade through half of sixth grade (1948-53) on a rural NY farm in a foster-type environment. Farm work happens every day and the only thing he can control is his mind. A close UFO encounter that occurs near the end of his internment on the farm turns his mind toward science and unknown paths of endeavor in manufacturing and the wild. In 1962, the largest Rochester manufacturing unit is his first encounter with highly educated and driven management. They want reasonably competent, obedient, yes men, which is a sad reminder of life on the farm. Michael resents exacting bosses who use people to achieve their personal goals while giving workers little in return. He desires and thrives in the wild world of creation, science, experimental fixtures, and the unknown. Happiness is out there in the form of poetry, painting, dream control, gravity and his last good job, which is at Xerox. His desire of retribution against the system fades as he realizes the Lord has helped him all along.
