Book excerpt: Stuck in bed with pneumonia, Ivy is delighted when the new neighbours arrive. and they are even better than she could have hoped, for the Halibuts are circus-people! Alfred Halibut is as dreamy and imaginative as Ivy herself, and she feels she has a real friend at last. The Halibuts are so happy in Springfield that they tell the rest of the circus - who move in, too. Soon the town has a snake lady taking her cobra for walks, and a troupe of acrobats whose ambition is to collect garages. The people of Springfield are not happy, and a perfectly polite anti-circus campaign is spreading through the town. Unless Ivy and Alfred can make everybody see sense, Ivy's new friends will be forced to leave - she's not letting that happen without a fight...
Download or read book The Circus in Winter written by Cathy Day and published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. This book was released on 2005-07-06 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over a half century, a small Indiana town hosts a circus troupe during the off-seasons in linked stories “as graceful as any acrobat’s high-wire act” (San Francisco Chronicle). A Story Prize Finalist From 1884 to 1939, the Great Porter Circus made the unlikely choice to winter in an Indiana town called Lima, a place that feels as classic as Sherwood Anderson's Winesburg, Ohio, and as wondrous as a first trip to the Big Top. In Lima, an elephant can change the course of a man's life—or the manner of his death. Jennie Dixianna entices men with her dazzling Spin of Death and keeps them in line with secrets locked in a cedar box. The lonely wife of the show’s manager has each room of her house painted like a sideshow banner, indulging her desperate passion for a young painter. And a former clown seeks consolation from his loveless marriage in his post-circus job at Clown Alley Cleaners. In this collection of linked stories spanning decades, Cathy Day follows the circus people into their everyday lives and brings the greatest show on earth to the page. “[An] exquisite story collection.” —The Washington Post “Often funny, always graceful, and rich with a mix of historical and imaginative detail.” —Tim O’Brien, author of The Things They Carried “Sublimely imaginative and affecting.” —The Boston Globe

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John O'Brien's 'Around the Boree Log, and Other Verses' is a collection of poetry that celebrates Australian rural life and culture with a deep sense of nostalgia and appreciation. Written in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, O'Brien's work reflects the literary context of Australian bush poetry, drawing inspiration from the likes of Banjo Paterson and Henry Lawson. His verse is characterized by its simplicity and sincerity, portraying the beauty and hardship of life in the outback. John O'Brien, a Catholic priest born Patrick Joseph Hartigan, used his experiences in rural New South Wales to shape his poetry and provide insight into the values and struggles of the Australian bush people. His deep connection to the land and its people shines through in his heartfelt and often humorous verses, making him a beloved figure in Australian literature. I highly recommend 'Around the Boree Log, and Other Verses' to readers interested in Australian poetry and the depiction of rural life. O'Brien's work captures the essence of the outback while offering a glimpse into the heart and soul of the Australian bushmen.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The circus has been an art form since early Roman times, and was the best and only local, traveling entertainment, before huge electronic technology advances of the twentieth century. The history of the circus from early times to present is important, fascinating, and disappearing. There is another piece of history, soon to disappear forever, and sometimes linked with circus life, the cultural ethnic group of peoples called Gypsys. The gypsy world is underdocumented and somehow linked to a lifestyle of traveling and entertaining people. What is a circus without animals or a gypsy camp without horses? The main character of Adorina and the Elephant Choir is a gypsy girl, called Dori, who started life as an abandoned baby, and grew up to become the star of a circus. She became an animal trainer or one of those people who have an affinity with animals and a special way to communicate with them. Dori had no mother, in the beginning, but during her life in the circus is given, two special mothers. She is a twin and finds herself in danger, from her gypsy brother. She is by birth order, first born, and therefore Queen of the Gypsys. Dori also finds her selfworth and a boy to love. The circus she lived in, is a place most kids would love to run away to. Adorina and the Elephant Choir tells the story of the circus and the people who live and breathe circus. Also, the book deals with human relationships, trials and tribulations, emotions, and resolution. The book is generally geared for children and young people, but adults will enjoy reading the book also.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The life and songs of singer-songwriter Momus during his time at Creation records and beyond. Momus - the stage name of musician Nicholas Currie - is one of the most prolific and talented indie songwriters of the last forty years. His work is controversial, influential and highly regarded. From aspiring indie pop star of the 1980s to Japanese chart success in the 1990s through many experimental works to the present day, he has been a constant in the search for intelligent, thinking person's pop. Jarvis Cocker asked him to produce his band Pulp, the NME memorably awarded his album "Hippopotamomus" 0/10, Creation Records dropped him when he proved too dangerous for them, and his more controversial work led to astounding legal tussles. His personal life has involved scandal and heartbreak and he lost an eye following an infection, resulting in his distinctive eye-patch. His songs including "The Hairstyle of the Devil", "The Guitar Lesson" and "I Want You but I Don't Need You" are acclaimed and have been covered by artists including Amanda Palmer and Steven Wilson.

Book Synopsis Front Royal and Warren County by : Thomas Blumer
Download or read book Front Royal and Warren County written by Thomas Blumer and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Where the Shenandoah River forks, Front Royal and Warren County lie nestled at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Although explorers first viewed the area in the mid-1600s, Front Royal was not chartered until 1785, and it was 1836 before Warren County was formed. Shortly thereafter, railroad service came to the region, creating a tremendous economic impact. The War between the States took a great toll on the town and county, with the Union Army occupying the town six times. Although economically devastated by the war, the communities were rebuilt and the railroad resumed operation in 1873, giving the entire region a much needed revival. During the 20th century, industry flourished here, primarily dominated by American Viscose and the Old Virginia Packing Company. The 1930s brought a great influx of people to the area with the development of the Shenandoah National Park and the exploration of Skyline Caverns, situated between Front Royal and Skyline Drive. Today countless visitors are drawn to the rich history and quaint charm of Front Royal and Warren County.
