Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1954, in a remote mountain village in South America, a little girl was abducted. She was four years old. Marina Chapman was stolen from her housing estate and abandoned deep in the Colombian jungle. That she survived is a miracle. Two days later, half-drugged, terrified, and starving, she came upon a troop of capuchin monkeys. Acting entirely on instinct, she tried to do what they did: copying their actions she slowly learned to fend for herself. So begins the story of her five years among the monkeys, during which time she gradually became feral; lost the ability to speak, lost all inhibition, lost any sense of being human, replacing human society with the social mores her new simian family. But society was eventually to reclaim her. At age ten she was discovered by a pair of hunters who took her to the lawless Colombian city of Cucuta where, in exchange for a parrot, they sold her to a brothel. When she learned that she was to be groomed for prostitution, she made her plans to escape. But her adventure was not over yet... In the vein of Slumdog Millionaire and City of God, this rousing story of a lost child who overcomes the dangers of the wild to finally reclaim her life will astonish readers everywhere.

Book excerpt: You were born a genius, but that seed was obstructed and malnourished while you struggled to grow in the jungle of life. Transcending these limitations to reclaim your destiny, happiness, success and fulfillment is what this groundbreaking book is all about. Everything in existence has a forward-pulling existential purpose that serves itself and indeed, the entire universe – a Purposehood. The Purposehood of everything is to evolve and expand exponentially in a powerful, symbiotic relationship. Moving against this force creates stress and tension; moving with it creates harmony and ease. Based on Ammar’s deep, personal exploration of science, philosophy, religion, mysticism and existence itself, Purposehood: Transform Your Life, Transform the World invites you to reflect on your own life’s purpose and how you can embrace it to create positive change and success. About the Author Ammar sought fulfillment at a young age through his devotion to exploring religions. He attended Christian schools in Syria and spent ten years with Sufi masters and religious scholars, studying, teaching, and subsequently serving as a cleric. Later in life his focus turned to entrepreneurship, where he pursued success by starting and seed-investing in over thirty businesses, four of which are led by members of YPO, a global leadership community of chief executives. Ammar’s startup spirit extended to volunteering in YPO, where he is a founding member of eleven chapters spanning four continents, positively impacting their communities. He also founded the YPO Change Makers Club where members and spouses share their expertise with the wider community. Ammar initially graduated with an engineering degree from the University of Central Florida, and later from Harvard Business School’s “The President's Program in Leadership.” After a near-death experience followed by an eleven-year deep dive into the meaning of life, today Ammar is focused exclusively on working with volunteers to spark a Purposehood movement dedicated to helping people transform their lives and the world by discovering and living their existential purpose.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summer Rayne Oakes, an urban houseplant expert and environmental scientist, is the icon of wellness-minded millennials who want to bring nature indoors, according to a New York Times profile. Summer has managed to grow 1,000 houseplants in her Brooklyn apartment (and they're thriving!) Her secret? She approaches her relationships with plants as intentionally as if they were people. Everyone deserves to feel the inner peace that comes from taking care of greenery. Beyond the obvious benefits--beauty and cleaner air--there's a strong psychological benefit to nurturing plants as a path to mindfulness. They can reduce our stress level, lower our blood pressure, and improve our overall outlook. And they offer a rare opportunity to find joy by caring for another living being. When Summer Rayne Oakes moved to Brooklyn from the Pennsylvania countryside, she knew that bringing nature indoors was her only chance to stay sane. She found them by the side of the road, in long-forgotten window boxes, at farmers' markets, and in local garden shops. She found ways to shelve, hang, tuck, anchor, secure, and suspend them. She even installed a 150-foot expandable hose that connects to pipes under her kitchen sink, so she only has to spend about a half-hour a day tending to her plants--an activity that she describes as a "moving meditation." This is Summer's guidebook for cultivating an entirely new relationship with your plant children. Inside, you'll learn to: Pause for the flowers and greenery all around you, even the ones sprouting bravely between cracked pavement Trust that your apartment jungle offers you far more than pretty décor See the world from a plant's perspective, trading modern consumerism for sustainability Serve your chlorophyllic friends by learning to identify the right species for your home and to recreate their natural habitat (Bonus: your indoor garden won't die!) When we become plant parents, we also become better caretakers of ourselves, the people around us, and our planet. So, let's step inside the world of plants and discover how we can begin cultivating our own personal green space--in our homes, in our minds, and in our hearts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Go on a journey through the jungle without ever leaving your bed! With Your Bedroom is a Rainforest!, kids can transform an ordinary room into a habitat for some of Earth’s most amazing creatures with reusable, wall-safe (and BPA-free!), glow-in-the-dark stickers—everything from blue morpho butterflies to Bengal tigers to poison dart frogs! “What’s your favorite animal?” The answer to this question, much like one’s favorite color, can say a lot about a kid. Maybe they’re into gorillas because they admire their nobility; maybe the colors of a toucan capture their imagination; maybe they like crocodiles because they take to water. While there are countless possible answers to this question, one thing is almost certain: they probably aren’t going to say, “squirrel.” No, the favorite animal of a child tends to be exotic, dangerous, fast, and maybe even endangered. In the past, a long and expensive trip to the zoo was required for kids to pay a visit to their beast of choice. Well, not anymore! Your Bedroom is a Rainforest! brings the incredible ecosystems of Central America, northern South America, western Africa, Southeast Asia, and beyond, right to the walls of your child’s bedroom! Within this keepsake-worthy hardcover book you will find more than 60 reusable stickers of jaguars, capybara, scarlet macaws, monkeys, forest elephants, anacondas, and many more adorable—and sometimes ferocious—animals glow in the dark and bring your environment to life. Along with the stickers, kids can look forward to pages packed with illustrations of their favorite animals accompanied by fascinating, and often hard-to-believe facts, such as: - Most pandas spend half the day eating. - Toxic poison dart frogs have neon colors to warn predators. - Tiger urine smells like buttered popcorn. - Without sloths, there would be no avocados! - Lions may be called the kings of the jungle, but they don’t live anywhere near them. - Much of the life in the rainforest is found in the trees. - Unlike many other cats, jaguars do not avoid water; in fact, they are excellent swimmers. The high-quality, glow-in-the-dark stickers might be what gets kids interested, but the amazing facts are sure to be what keeps them around. And the best part? You’re never too old to appreciate amazing jungle animals! About the Author: Hannah Sheldon-Dean is a writer, editor, and educator specializing in publications for children and young adults. She has written several licensed activity books and gift books with Penguin Young Readers, and she writes and edits fiction, nonfiction, and educational materials for a variety of outlets. She is currently a writing consultant at the Columbia University School of Social Work and a volunteer mentor with Girls Write Now. Hannah received a Master’s of Social Work from New York University and a BA in Literary Arts and Education Policy from Brown University, and she loves to work on projects that fall at the intersection of those fields. She lives in Brooklyn but grew up in Vermont, so you might see her wandering the city in search of pine trees, mourning doves, caterpillars, or whatever other bits of nature she can find. She also loves singing with Khorikos choir, baking bread, and dreaming about the animal sanctuary she’ll open someday.

Book excerpt: In 1854, Leiutenant Isaac G Strain, an ambitious American explorer and U S Naval officer, was given command of Cyane, the first ship to voyage to the Darien Gap. Strain was a natural born leader, a wild-haired, wiry-strong frontiersman who had travelled extensively throughout the Southern Hemisphere. Greatly admired, Strain was expected to successfully cross the ithsmus of Central America through the Darien Gap. However, the expedition would prove to be perilous. Armed with fraudulent information about the areas rugged terrain, phony maps and only a small supply of food, Strain and his team of 29 men ventured far from their ship and became lost in this mountainous, steep-banked jungle, full of unfriendly natives that attacked the party. Beaten down by intense heat and days of walking, some of Strain's men contracted lurid mystery diseases, while others, despite the lush vegetation, were slowly starving to death. The situation was grim and Strain beleived that their best bet for survival was for him to force his way down river in search of help. When he did not return after 21 days, the detachment decided to back track and left Strain for dead. But Strain made it back to his men with help, though nine had perished and the rest were delirious. He managed to lead his enfeebled party nearly 200 miles to safety.

Book excerpt: First published in 2006. Who and what are the 'indigenous people'? The question has become highly contentious in India today, where eighty million peoples belonging to the state category of 'scheduled tribes' are attempting to gain international recognition as indigenous people as a part of struggle for recognition and rights in land and resources. This volume interrogates the politics surrounding the category of peoples in India known as 'tribals' or 'adivasis' and more recently 'indigenous peoples'.
