Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New suburban communities have sprung up all over America, while industrial plants and other commercial districts in the inner city have been left to decay. Nowhere is this more evident that the midwestern United States, where newly formed communities have funneled jobs and income from the inner city. Generally known as sprawl, the problem is particularly acute in those metropolitan areas where deconcentration is taking place-decline in the central city coupled with suburban growth. This process creates benefits in the sububrs, but also increasingly poses costs in the form of congestion and increased infrastructure costs. When Corporations Leave Town analyzes and develops a consistent and comprehensive cost-benefit analysis of employment deconcentration, focussing on central cities and their suburbs. Sprawl and deconcentration have become big issues in Vice President Albert Gore's presidential campaign, and are the subject of a growing number of policy initiatives, conferences, and research efforts by organizing such as the Urban Land Institute, the National Homebuilders Association, and the Brookings Institute. Joseph Persky and Wim Wiewel compare the costs and benefits of a firm's locating in the central city with locating in the suburbs. They use a hypothetical model of a large manufacturing plant and a business services office in the Chicago metropolitan area to calculate tangible and intangible costs such as population and traffic congestion, air pollution, housing abandonment, loss of farmland, tax liabilities, and the strain put on suburban public resources. Persky and Wiewel then explore a broad range of public policies advocated for reversing or mitigating metropolitan deconcentration.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Pulitzer Prize-winning history of the mistreatment of black Americans. In this 'precise and eloquent work' - as described in its Pulitzer Prize citation - Douglas A. Blackmon brings to light one of the most shameful chapters in American history - an 'Age of Neoslavery' that thrived in the aftermath of the Civil War through the dawn of World War II. Using a vast record of original documents and personal narratives, Blackmon unearths the lost stories of slaves and their descendants who journeyed into freedom after the Emancipation Proclamation and then back into the shadow of involuntary servitude thereafter. By turns moving, sobering and shocking, this unprecedented account reveals these stories, the companies that profited the most from neoslavery, and the insidious legacy of racism that reverberates today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the past fifty years, America has been extraordinarily busy building prisons. Since 1970 we have tripled the total number of facilities, adding more than 1,200 new prisons to the landscape. This building boom has taken place across the country but is largely concentrated in rural southern towns. In 2007, John M. Eason moved his family to Forrest City, Arkansas, in search of answers to key questions about this trend: Why is America building so many prisons? Why now? And why in rural areas? Eason quickly learned that rural demand for prisons is complicated. Towns like Forrest City choose to build prisons not simply in hopes of landing jobs or economic wellbeing, but also to protect and improve their reputations. For some rural leaders, fostering a prison in their town is a means of achieving order in a rapidly changing world. Taking us into the decision-making meetings and tracking the impact of prisons on economic development, poverty, and race, Eason demonstrates how groups of elite whites and black leaders share power. Situating prisons within dynamic shifts that rural economies are undergoing and showing how racially diverse communities lobby for prison construction, Big House on the Prairie is a remarkable glimpse into the ways a prison economy takes shape and operates.

Book excerpt: New York in the 1990s faced a "quality if life" crisis of homelessness and public disorder. In response, frustrated local residents embraced the neoconservative ideas of then Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, who pledged to restore order through aggressive policing and punitive social policies, shifting the focus of government from improving the lives of the needy to protecting the welfare of the middle and upper classes. In exploring this development, Alex S. Vitale shows why historically liberal New York has voted against Democrats in the last four mayoral elections. In City of Disorder, Vitale uses neighborhood case studies and city-wide economics development data to investigate the rise of punitive urban social policies. His findings show that the neoconservative backlash against the homeless and poor was a direct result of urban liberalism's embracing of neoliberal economic development strategies and its unwillingness to use local resources to respond to the disorder it helped create in a way that would have brought positive change to those on the margins.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nobel-Prize-winning economist Paul Krugman argues that business leaders need to understand the differences between economic policy on the national and international scale and business strategy on the organizational scale. Economists deal with the closed system of a national economy, whereas executives live in the open-system world of business. Moreover, economists know that an economy must be run on the basis of general principles, but businesspeople are forever in search of the particular brilliant strategy. Krugman's article serves to elucidate the world of economics for businesspeople who are so close to it and yet are continually frustrated by what they see. Since 1922, Harvard Business Review has been a leading source of breakthrough management ideas-many of which still speak to and influence us today. The Harvard Business Review Classics series now offers readers the opportunity to make these seminal pieces a part of your permanent management library. Each highly readable volume contains a groundbreaking idea that continues to shape best practices and inspire countless managers around the world-and will have a direct impact on you today and for years to come.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abandoned factories, shipyards, warehouses, and refineries are features of many industrialized cities around the world. But despite their state of decline, these derelict sites remain vitally connected with the urban landscapes that surround them. In this enlightening new book, Alice Mah explores the experiences of urban decline and post-industrial change in three different community contexts: Niagara Falls, Canada/USA; Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK; and Ivanovo, Russia. Employing a unique methodological approach that combines ethnographic, spatial, and documentary methods, Mah draws on international comparisons of the landscapes and legacies of industrial ruination over the past forty years. Through this, she foregrounds the complex challenges of living with prolonged uncertainty and deprivation amidst socioeconomic change. This rich comparative study makes an essential contribution to far-reaching debates about the decline of manufacturing, regeneration, and identity, and will have important implications for urban theory and policy.

Book excerpt: Suburban Sprawl combines historical, political, economic, geographic, and urban planning analysis to provide the most comprehensive overview of why and how urban sprawl occurs. It shows that all previous attempts to pin the blame on one or two causes - "highway building" or "consumer preferences" - totally miss the complex and interwoven character of public policy and private interests in creating today's urban form. The authors have included the detailed analyses of expenditures which show that federal housing subsidies have contributed significantly to sprawl in the post-war period, as well as a comprehensive overview of policies that can be used to reduce sprawl or reduce its negative consequences. This book will inform the growing policy community involved in regionalism and the general urban policy community. It can also be assigned in undergraduate and graduate level classes in urban sociology, geography, urban politics, and urban planning.
