Book Synopsis Stories of New France by : Agnes Maule Machar
Download or read book Stories of New France written by Agnes Maule Machar and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-17 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories of New France: Being Tales of Adventure and Heroism From the Early History of Canada The seventeenth century may be called the heroic age of Canada. The infant colony had to struggle for existence against pitiless enemies and forces of nature strange and well-nigh insurmountable. The struggle brought out a race of heroes whose names no one in the Old or New World should willingly let die. Champlain, Maisonneuve, Daulac, La Salle remind us of Arthur's Knights of the Round Table. Le Jeune, Jogues, Brbeuf, Lallemant consecrated the colony by lives of noblest endeavor and heroic death. Their memories belong to the Church universal. Their names are worthy of a place in any martyrology. The object of this volume is to make the past of Canada better known, to those at least who have not leisure or opportunity to study the glowing pages of Parkman. Writers who follow him must consult his works. But few have the time to read through ten or twelve volumes about one period in the history of Canada. These stories deal with the time in question through episodes round which cluster all the most interesting details. The voyages of Jacques Cartier, the colonizing of Acadie, Quebec and Montreal, the wars with the Iroquois, the story of the Jesuit missions, the adventures of La Salle, the tale of Evangeline and the last siege of Quebec - so crowded with incident - include the chief points of interest in early Canadian history. For convenience these stories have been divided into two series. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bells of Old Quebec, and Other Poems of New France The subjects treated of in this little book of poems are all french-canadian, and most of them belong to the earliest portion of the history of Canada. All Canadians worthy of the name should study' closely the story of the men and events of early Canada, - the Canada of the French re' gime, which is often called New France. It is, perhaps the most romantic and the most inter esting part of the history of Canada. It takes in a rather long period, for, from the coming of Jacques Cartier in 1534, to the capture of Quebec by the British under 'wolfe, in 1759, there elapsed an interval of 225 years. That is how long the French were in Canada ahead of anybody else. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book The Book of New Canadians (Classic Reprint) written by D. J. Dickie and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-27 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of New Canadians The Book of New Canadians contains stories told by the children of twenty different countries. The stories de scribe the homes of about half the nations representatives of which have become citizens of Canada. Realising that it would be impossible in a book of this size to tell stories about all the different peoples now living in Canada, I consulted the latest census report of the Dominion Government. In the report the different nationals are listed in the order of the numbers resident in Canada. I chose the first twenty listed. Equally interesting and instructive stories about the other countries and their peoples could be told. Should these be called for a second book will, no doubt, be prepared. It is perhaps unnecessary to explain why stories of I France have not been included in the book. Since 1763 immigration from France has been very small, and as for the French Canadians they are much more anciently Canadian than the British Canadians. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diane of Ville Marie: A Romance of French Canada In dealing with historical events and characters it seems only fair to the reader to avow what liberties have been taken with facts, and to state exactly to what extent this tale is founded upon history. The Le Ber family were prominent figures among their contemporaries. Jacques Le Ber, brother - in-law to the redoubtable Charles Le Moyne, was one of the richest merchants of New France. A hardy and intrepid soldier, he was ennobled by Louis XIV. In 1696. In speaking of him M. Dollier de Casson says: M. Jacques Le Ber has in this way rendered valuable services to the colony, exposing himself very often in canoe, on the ice, or in the woods, carrying despatches. Book Synopsis History of the Dominion of Canada (Classic Reprint) by : William Parr Greswell
Download or read book History of the Dominion of Canada (Classic Reprint) written by William Parr Greswell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Dominion of Canada New England filled up far more rapidly than New France, and the test of population was always against the French, generation after generation. Little by little France's dream of Transatlantic Empire faded away. After 1783 it might have been supposed that the History of Canada would be simplified when the History of North America parts into two distinct channels. But such is not the case. The continual quarrels of the French and British colonists north of the international boundary, sometimes on questions of race and sometimes on religion, obscure the narrative and interfere with the plain course of material progress. The settlement of the United Empire Loyalists in Ontario complicated the pages of history, whilst it created a Province. Two nationalities were facing one another, and Lord Durham observed in his Report (1838) that their antagonism was bitter, strong and thoroughly uncompromising. The Pax Britannica has settled down long ago upon French and English, Roman Catholics and Protestants, and the country, since the Confederation Bill of 1867, seems to have. Entered upon a long untroubled era of prosperity; but this end was not gained without much delay and many misunderstandings. Even now we seem to hear the echoes of the old strife. For many years it was the policy of the Home Government to act upon the prin ciple of Divide et impera, and to keep the Canadian settle ments as distinct as possible from one another, fearing rather than favouring the idea of political union. Traces of this policy were discernible, Lord Durham remarks, up to 1817. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-03-24 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Canada in the Seventeenth Century From the French of Pierre Generosity You are to know, my dear readers, that I have two reasons for writing this little treatise. The first is, that I was invited by many respectable people, whom I had the honour to converse with, while I was in France, and who took great pleasure in hearing about this country, and in being disabused of the unfavourable opinions they had entertained of it in some respects, to send them some account of this New France, that is to say, of what the country is like and of what is to be found in it, in order that they might make it known to their friends. The number of those who asked me to do so being great, 't would not have been without difficulty that I could have complied with their requests, and therefore, I resolved to have this description printed, and to beg of them to have recourse to it. The second reason is, that having become aware of His Majesty's affection for his New France, and of his resolution to destroy our enemies, the Iroquois, and to cause this country to be peopled, I thought that I should oblige many persons who might have a mind to come here, or to send some of their relations here, by making the country known to them before they came. I had long had a thought of this kind in my mind, and I always hoped that some one would take a pen in hand for the above purpose; but seeing that no one made it his duty to do so, I resolved to write this description, while waiting for some one else to write one in more elegant language, because, for my part, I have contented myself with merely writing to you of facts as they are.
