Book excerpt: This is a true story of my own life experience which will include sequel editions. When I was just a young child aged 7 I said to myself and to God that one day I would like to tell the world about how my life has been guided and led and what my purpose in life is. Surely we all have a divine purpose? Now that I am 5oyears old year 2013 I have experienced the ups and downs the abuse and struggle of courts and divorce and separation and anxiety that stress can do and I’ve struggled to write from my heart to allow people to see that life is about balance and choice and the consequences are ours to rectify. There is no need for blame but a great need to develop a good attitude and overcome whatever life throws at us. This story is to help both men and woman to change in old habit patterns that cause harm in relationships to learn how to recognize those effects and detach from them and make life worthwhile and how with the right kind of guidance and choices. No-one can change the past but we do have the ability to change the future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the emergence of Western philosophy and science among the classical Greeks, debates have raged over the relative significance of biology and culture on an individual's behavior. Today, recent advances in genetics and biological science have pushed most scholars past the tired nature vs. nurture debate to examine the ways in which the natural and the social interact to influence human behavior. In What's Normal?, Allan Horwitz brings a fresh approach to this emerging perspective. Rather than try to solve these issues universally, Horwitz demonstrates that both social and biological mechanisms have varying degrees of influence in different situations. Through case studies of human universals such as incest aversion, fear, appetite, grief, and sex, Horwitz first discusses the extreme instances where biology determines behavior, where culture dominates, and where culture overrides basic biological instincts. He then details the variety of ways in which genes and environments interact; for instance, the primal drive to eat and store calories when food supplies were scarce creates serious problems in a society where food is abundant and obesity stigmatized. Now that it's often easier to change our biology rather than our culture, an understanding of which behaviors and traits are simply normal or abnormal, and which are pathological or necessitate treatment is more important than ever. Wide-ranging and accessible, What's Normal? provides a crucial guide to the biological and social bases of human behavior at the heart of these matters.

How after a long uphill struggle to get help and recognition, finding every cloud has a silver lining when Nicky is diagnosed as bordering on genius. She later goes on to discuss his bizarre behaviour, his humour and eccentricities. Digging deeper into the family for a possible genetic/hereditary link, Georgie's humourous look at her colourful family and friends, not to mention thieving ex-husbands, cheating boyfriends, no-one is excluded. Even Ellwood Blues the dog that ran off with her Xmas turkey and disgraced himself. Told in Georgie's northern gritty humour, this is a refreshingly honest account of her life so far, and the rollercoaster of emotion she'd found herself on.

DISABLED? Whatever body you’re born into, the pressure to be normal is everywhere. But have you ever met a normal person? What do they look like? Where do they live? What do they eat for breakfast? And what the **** does normal mean anyway? This is the award-winning wobbly comedian Francesca Martinez’s funny, personal, and universal story of how she learned to stick two shaky fingers up to the crazy expectations of a world obsessed with being ‘normal’.

Book excerpt: Liza Long, the author of “I Am Adam Lanza’s Mother"—as seen in the HBO® documentary A Dangerous Son—speaks out about mental illness. Like most of the nation, Liza Long spent December 14, 2012, mourning the victims of the Newtown shooting. As the mother of a child with a mental illness, however, she also wondered: “What if my son does that someday?” The emotional response she posted on her blog went viral, putting Long at the center of a passionate controversy. Now, she takes the next step. Powerful and shocking, The Price of Silence looks at how society stigmatizes mental illness—including in children—and the devastating societal cost. In the wake of repeated acts of mass violence, Long points the way forward.

Book excerpt: *As heard on BBC Radio 4 Woman's Hour* *A Blackwell's and Waterstones Best Popular Science Book of 2022* 'Excellent ... one of those rare pop-science books that make you look at the whole world differently' The Daily Telegraph ***** 'Riveting' Mail on Sunday ***** 'Captivating' Guardian, Book of the Day 'Compelling' Observer Sarah Chaney takes us on an eye-opening and surprising journey into the history of science, revisiting the studies, landmark experiments and tests that proliferated from the early 19th century to find answers to the question: what's normal? These include a census of hallucinations - and even a UK beauty map (which claimed the women in Aberdeen were "the most repellent"). On the way she exposes many of the hangovers that are still with us from these dubious endeavours, from IQ tests to the BMI. Interrogating how the notion and science of standardisation has shaped us all, as individuals and as a society, this book challenges why we ever thought that normal might be a desirable thing to be.
