Book excerpt: Many Christians view the Bible as an instruction manual. While the Bible does provide instruction, it can also captivate, comfort, delight, shock, and inspire. In short, it elicits emotion--just like poetry. By learning to read and love poetry, says literature professor Matthew Mullins, readers can increase their understanding of the biblical text and learn to love God's Word more. Each chapter includes exercises and questions designed to help readers put the book's principles and practices into action.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fresh, provocative look at the link between poetry and Christianity, both as it relates to the Bible itself as well as to Christian and religious life, by an accomplished scholar. The Bible is full of poems. In the Old Testament, there are the Psalms and the Song of Songs, the great exhortations and lamentations of the Prophets, and passages of poetry woven in throughout. In the New Testament, Jesus describes the kingdom of heaven with poetic epithets such as “a treasure hid in a field,” calling the Son of God “the true vine,” “the light of the world,” “the good shepherd,” and “the way, the truth, and the life.” The Gospels reverberate with allusions to the poetry of the Old Testament; the last book of all is Revelation, a visionary poem. The Bible, in other words, asks to be read poetically from start to end, and yet readers have rarely considered what that might mean, much less heeded that call. In The Bible and Poetry, the poet and scholar Michael Edwards reshapes our understanding of the Bible and religious belief, arguing that poetry is not an ornamental or accidental feature but is central to both. He speaks personally of his early, unanticipated, transformative encounters with scripture. He offers close, insightful, and resonant readings of biblical passages. Poetry, as he sees it, is the vital and necessary medium of the Creator’s word, and the truth of the Bible is not a question of precepts and propositions but of a direct experience of its poetry, its power.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bible is by far the leading source of inspiration for Western literature, and in particular, the life of Jesus has drawn the attention of artists and writers throughout the ages. Now, in a volume of astonishing range and originality, Robert Atwan, George Dardess, and Peggy Rosenthal present 280 remarkable poems from world literature focusing on Jesus's life and teaching. Readers accustomed to the predictable inclusions of many anthologies will be surprised and delighted by the diversity of poets represented here, from Aquinas, Dante, de Guevara, Donne, and Sor Juana, to D.H. Lawrence, Gabriela Mistral, Wole Soyinka, Margaret Atwood, Gwendolyn Brooks, Czeslaw Milosz, and Leopold Senghor. Perhaps no other thematically organized anthology could have brought together writers as different as Jorge Luis Borges, Thomas Merton, Alice Walker, Rainer Maria Rilke, and Jack Kerouac. Indeed, simply to turn the page in Divine Inspiration is an adventure in itself. And in terms of form, style, modulations of tone and perspective, the variety here is as unparalleled as it is unpredictable. The editors of Divine Inspiration have done a masterful job of unifying this vast assortment of poems. Organized chronologically around the life of Jesus, the book is divided into nine sections--from Birth and Infancy, through Healings and Miracles, to the Resurrection-- and presents passages from the Gospels followed by the poems they inspired. This structure gives readers the dual pleasures of a strong narrative pull punctuated by moments of lyric intensity. Our familiarity with the life of Jesus is thus enlivened, deepened, and in some cases wholly transformed by the imaginative power of the poems. In the largest section of the book, on the Passion of Jesus, we find an array of poems by Anna Akhmatova, Antonio Machado, Thomas Hardy, Miguel de Unamuno, Charles Baudelaire, R.S. Thomas, Andrew Marvell, Frederico Garcia Lorca, and Denise Levertov, among others. To see the Passion of Jesus refracted through the lenses of such poets is to see it anew, or more vividly than before. And to encounter Chinese, Korean, Nigerian, Arab, Latin American, Scandinavian, Hungarian, and Greek poets alongside English, French, and German is a testimony both to the editors' devoted scholarship and to the power of Jesus's life to inspire great poetry across a spectrum of cultures and eras. An invaluable sourcebook for students, scholars, and general readers alike, Divine Inspiration should prove equally satisfying to readers with a strong interest in religion and to all lovers of poetry.

The angels sang, as in bands Over the lily-scented fields they flew. Eagerly-joyous bands. What means this rapture? What these strangely mingled sounds - this commotion In all the sun-lit fields, and on golden streets, Where only angels' rustling wings make motion Ever, in soft music with their sandaled feet. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Lay of the Southern Cross: And Other Poems Should you be curious to know, dear Reader, why this Poem was written, it is no conceit, but the honest truth to say, that I was impelled to write it. I might almost say, I could not help it. I undertook in February, 1886. By desire of those whose request was an honour and a command, the task of writing the History of the Church of New Zealand, * and in my preparation for the work became simply enamoured of the wondrous tale of the evangeliza tion of the country, which may be described as a Religious Romance. The more I read, the more my admiration grew, until at length it broke out in song. I communicated my secret to very few; for I was afraid lest my enthusiasm should fail, or grow cold. But it was not so; on the contrary, the work became more and more a comfort to me, and a support under severe mental trials and bodily illness. It has never been a hindrance to my duties; for it became my chief refreshment. I very seldom sat down to elaborate any portion of it; for I composed almost the whole of it in the course of my walks, or when I was dressing, or on wet days, as I walked up and down for exercise and the results were committed to paper as opportunity offered. But why publish it, you may ask? Well, I humbly hope that this, and the other shorter poems, which help to make up this volume, and which have been written under similar circumstances, on various occasions in the course of nearly half a lifetime, may be accepted, through the dear Lord Jesus Christ, as a thank-offering to our Heavenly Father, and be made use of by Him, as He knows best, for the good of His Church. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Musings in the Wilderness: In Verse Whatever speaks of the total absence of sin in the future will be understood as anticipative of the new heavens and the new earth, wherein dwells righteousness, alone. In human governments, those who have been condemned to imprisonment for life are not counted as of the body politic or as existing. No one can write from the heart who does not tell the heart's own experience; and it may be that something of one's own history in relation to God and the Lord Jesus Christ may be traced here, but it will be manifest that often where the pronoun of the first person singular is used it applies to the reader as well as the writer. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gentleness of Jesus This then is the meaning of the words, The bruised reed Shall He not break, the smoking flax shall He not quench, till He send forth judgment unto victory. He would not put forth His power against His foes. This was the method of His life. This was the way in which He should conquer the world; not by strife nor cry, but by an infinite and unfailing gentleness. Look at it all along His life. If He would uplift the world, the first thing is to make life sacred, the very beginning Of it. Infanticide was scarcely a crime at His coming anywhere but in Palestine, and even there without any ado or great horror, Herod, to quiet his uneasy fear, can send out his sol diers and slay all the young children through the coasts. Here, then, is the problem, - How Shall He make childhood sacred? How uplift and hallow the world's Opinion of the little child? How bring all the world's tenderness and pity about the babe, and gather all the world's might for the protection of the little one? Shall He go forth and tell with sweet words of their charms, a champion of their claims? Shall He go forth with fiery indignation against their wrongs and hurl angry threats at all that de graded and dishonored them? Come and see how it is done. He Himself comes as the lit tle Babe of Bethlehem, wrapped in swaddling clothes, and laid in a manger. Controversy, conflict, terror, destruction, ' - where are they? He cannot break a bruised reed, He cannot quench a smoking flax, He who lies as the Babe upon the mother's bosom. Thus He up lifted and hallowed the little child and made it a thing almost divine, - Of such is the King dom Of Heaven. Thus He made motherhood sacred, and left it the mightiest power to soften and ennoble men in all the world.
