Download or read book What We Did On Our Holiday written by John Harding and published by Random House. This book was released on 2011-09-30 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thirty-somethings Nick and Laura have been married for 10 years and things aren't going well. She senses her biological clock ticking away and wants children while he doesn't. Not because he doesn't like children but because he feels a child would be just one responsibility too many. Nick's problem is his parents. He's devoted to them of course, but sometimes even he finds his patience wearing a little thin which in turn brings on the guilt. But they are rather a handful. They're conservative, highly eccentric and increasingly infirm. His Mum's so enormously overweight that her heart's now a bit dicky and she is certainly no longer up to looking after Dad by herself. He's got Parkinson's Disease - not the shaking kind, as Mum's always reminding people - but he's unable to do even the simplest task himself and needs constant care and attention. Nick knows the time has come to take the matter in hand but things need to be handled carefully. And so he and Laura take them to Malta for what they hope will be a happy final family holiday. Nick thinks his only problem is going to be avoiding Laura's amorous advances but this particular island turns out to be a sun-kissed cupboard with more than its fair share of skeletons... Tackling a taboo subject with sensitivity, understanding, great affection and good humour, What We Did On Our Holiday is a remarkably uplifting, moving and reassuring novel about a time in our lives when it seems roles are reversed and we find ourselves looking after the very people we'd always assumed would be there to look after us.

Download or read book Always True written by Sandy Lee Carlson and published by Sandy Lee Carlson. This book was released on 2019-12-31 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Describing her third book, Sandy Lee Carlson says: From the time I was a child and my Mom puffed on her Marlboro reds, I knew I would lose her to lung cancer. I felt the grief, rehearsed it. In 2017, when doctors confirmed this nightmare vision, all those years of rehearsing counted for nothing. My mom was sick and suffering and would suffer more intensely until the end. I had two years to do all I could to bring joy and love to her days. I would go down to her and Dad's home in Pennsylvania every Friday after work to spend as much time as I could with her and Dad. This is my tribute to Mom and to the comforting idea that life will go on, that the work our mothers do has a life of its own and will survive.

Book Synopsis Windswept & Interesting by : Billy Connolly
Download or read book Windswept & Interesting written by Billy Connolly and published by Two Roads. This book was released on 2021-10-14 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his first full-length autobiography, comedy legend and national treasure Billy Connolly reveals the truth behind his windswept and interesting life. Born in a tenement flat in Glasgow in 1942, orphaned by the age of 4, and a survivor of appalling abuse at the hands of his own family, Billy's life is a remarkable story of success against all the odds. Billy found his escape first as an apprentice welder in the shipyards of the River Clyde. Later he became a folk musician - a 'rambling man' - with a genuine talent for playing the banjo. But it was his ability to spin stories, tell jokes and hold an audience in the palm of his hand that truly set him apart. As a young comedian Billy broke all the rules. He was fearless and outspoken - willing to call out hypocrisy wherever he saw it. But his stand-up was full of warmth, humility and silliness too. His startling, hairy 'glam-rock' stage appearance - wearing leotards, scissor suits and banana boots - only added to his appeal. It was an appearance on Michael Parkinson's chat show in 1975 - and one outrageous story in particular - that catapulted Billy from cult hero to national star. TV shows, documentaries, international fame and award-winning Hollywood movies followed. Billy's pitch-perfect stand-up comedy kept coming too - for over 50 years, in fact - until a double diagnosis of cancer and Parkinson's Disease brought his remarkable live performances to an end. Since then he has continued making TV shows, creating extraordinary drawings... and writing. Windswept and Interesting is Billy's story in his own words. It is joyfully funny - stuffed full of hard-earned wisdom as well as countless digressions on fishing, farting and the joys of dancing naked. It is an unforgettable, life-affirming story of a true comedy legend. 'I didn't know I was Windswept and Interesting until somebody told me. It was a friend who was startlingly exotic himself. He'd just come back from Kashmir and was all billowy shirt and Indian beads. I had long hair and a beard and was swishing around in electric blue flairs. He said: "Look at you - all windswept and interesting!" I just said: "Exactly!" After that, I simply had to maintain my reputation...'

Download or read book DEAD JEALOUS written by Cary Smith and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-05-20 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harry Rusper, a trader in other people's discarded golden trinkets, has been discovered dead by his wife in their kitchen just outside Lincoln, with a claw hammer embedded in his skull. At the same time in the cathedral city, Harry's younger brother has had his home ransacked while he dined out in a local restaurant. Is the timing sheer coincidence or had Danny been at home would the same fate have come knocking on his door? Swedish born DI Inga Larsson realised right from the outset that this wasn't a run-of-the-mill domestic gone badly wrong. She knew for certain that this Harry Rusper was just as dead as any other murder victim, but with gold as a defining issue. Inga had to consider that this could very well be a case of both brothers being made to pay the price for Harry's brash dealing indiscretions. Her hunt for the killer and the truth will lead Inga down a road she could never have imagined. A road that will unleash a secret which, if revealed, would make headlines across the world.

Download or read book God Is Just Love written by Ken Whitt and published by Read the Spirit Books. This book was released on 2021-02-02 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can people of faith foster love and resilience in our children while building sustainable, diverse communities? That’s the big question Ken Whitt answers in light of the many threats looming in our world. Through wisdom he has gleaned from scientists, scholars and lots of real families, Ken shows how God’s love is a hopeful compass in our lives. He encourages enjoying stories, songs and explorations of the natural world with children, and closes with “100 Things Families Can Do To Find Hope and Be Love.” Because Ken has years of experience working with multi-generational groups, his book encourages reflections and activities with our families that he knows will be both fun and faithful. The cover of his book illustrates a central story he shares about the wonderment families discover when they look up into the starry night sky with their children. “Ken Whitt offers care to weary souls in this book. It is not just his words but the spirit that manifests through the words. Ken says that love is at the heart of reality and love is what he gently breathes on us here,” Christian ethicist David Gushee, author of Changing Our Mind, writes in the book’s Foreword. “As you read this wise and joyful book, I know you will feel both instructed and delighted, and you will agree that your life has been enriched by adopting Ken Whitt as a literary pastor, mentor and friend,” Brian McLaren, best-selling author of more than 20 books, writes in the Preface. “In extensive dialog with scientists and theologians, Ken shows the delightful and enriching complementarity of faith and science. Both can feed us mentally and emotionally, and both are needed to move us in constructive and creative ways in the face of the global perils we face,” writes Daniel Buttry, author of Blessed Are the Peacemakers and the former Global Consultant for Peace and Justice of the American Baptist Churches.
Book Synopsis Stairways to Heaven by : Geoffrey Macnab
Download or read book Stairways to Heaven written by Geoffrey Macnab and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-04-12 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What has brought about the transformation of the British film industry over the last few decades, to the beginnings of what is arguably a new golden era? In the mid-1980s the industry was in a parlous state. The number of films produced in the UK was tiny. Cinema attendance had dipped to an all-time low, cinema buildings were in a state of disrepair and home video had yet to flourish. Since then, while many business challenges - especially for independent producers and distributors - remain, the industry overall has developed beyond recognition. In recent years, as British films have won Oscars, Cannes Palms and Venice Golden Lions, releases such as Love Actually, Billy Elliot, Skyfall, Paddington and the Harry Potter series have found enormous commercial as well as critical success. The UK industry has encouraged, and benefitted from, a huge amount of inward investment, much of it from the Hollywood studios, but also from the National Lottery via the UK Film Council and BFI. This book portrays the visionaries and officials who were at the helm as a digital media revolution began to reshape the industry. Through vivid accounts based on first-hand interviews of what was happening behind the scenes, film commentator and critic Geoffrey Macnab provides in-depth analysis of how and why the British film industry has risen like a phoenix from the ashes.
