Book Synopsis TEACHING ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE, Second Edition by : MANISH A. VYAS
Download or read book TEACHING ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE, Second Edition written by MANISH A. VYAS and published by PHI Learning Pvt. Ltd.. This book was released on 2015-09-17 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: English Language Teaching (ELT), especially English as a Second Language (ESL) and English as a Foreign Language (EFL), has been witnessing unprecedented changes in curriculum, teaching methodology, and the application of learning theories. This has created a demand for teachers who can teach English to learners of varied cultural, socio-economic and psychological backgrounds. The book, in its second edition, continues to discuss the modern trends, innovations, as well as the difficulties and challenges in teaching and learning ESL in a non-native context. The book, with contributions from many experts (each one specializing in a particular field) from countries such as UK, USA, Australia, New Zealand, India, Nigeria, Sri Lanka, China, and Japan, provides new methods, strategies and application-oriented solutions to overcome the problems in a practical way. The book deals with all topics pertinent to English as a Second Language or English for the non-native speakers, and these are further reinforced by a large number of examples and quotations from different sources. The new edition comes along with thoroughly improvised chapters on Narrative Inquiry for Teacher Development (Chapter 13) and Mass Media, Language Attitudes and Language Interaction Phenomena (Chapter 23): to provide an insight on the innovative approaches in Teacher training and in classrooms, and new approaches and changing language dimensions in the world of media, and in general. What distinguishes the text is its focus on modern innovations and use of technology in ELT/CLT (Communicative Language Teaching). Postgraduate Students of English, teachers, teacher-trainees (B.Ed./M.A. Education/M.Ed.), and teacher-educators who are concerned with teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) should find this book immensely helpful.a
Book Synopsis The Hongzhou School of Chan Buddhism in Eighth- through Tenth-Century China by : Jinhua Jia
Download or read book The Hongzhou School of Chan Buddhism in Eighth- through Tenth-Century China written by Jinhua Jia and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a wide-ranging examination of the Hongzhou school of Chan Buddhism—the precursor to Zen Buddhism—under Mazu Daoyi (709–788) and his successors in eighth- through tenth-century China, which was credited with creating a Golden Age or classical tradition. Jinhua Jia uses stele inscriptions and other previously ignored texts to explore the school's teachings and history. Defending the school as a full-fledged, significant lineage, Jia reconstructs Mazu's biography and resolves controversies about his disciples. In contrast to the many scholars who either accept or reject the traditional Chan histories and discourse records, she thoroughly examines the Hongzhou literature to differentiate the original, authentic portions from later layers of modification and recreation. The book describes the emergence and maturity of encounter dialogue and analyzes the new doctrines and practices of the school to revise the traditional notion of Mazu and his followers as iconoclasts. It also depicts the strivings of Mazu's disciples for orthodoxy and how the criticisms of and reflections on Hongzhou doctrine led to the schism of this line and the rise of the Shitou line and various houses during the late Tang and Five Dynasties periods. Jia refutes the traditional Chan genealogy of two lines and five houses and calls for new frameworks in the study of Chan history. An annotated translation of datable discourses of Mazu is also included.

Book Synopsis Basic Issues in Medieval Philosophy - Second Edition by : Richard N. Bosley
Download or read book Basic Issues in Medieval Philosophy - Second Edition written by Richard N. Bosley and published by Broadview Press. This book was released on 2006-05-09 with total page 853 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this important collection, the editors argue that medieval philosophy is best studied as an interactive discussion between thinkers working on very much the same problems despite being often widely separated in time or place. Each section opens with at least one selection from a classical philosopher, and there are many points at which the readings chosen refer to other works that the reader will also find in this collection. There is a considerable amount of material from central figures such as Augustine, Abelard, Duns Scotus, and William of Ockham, as well as extensive texts from thinkers in the medieval Islamic world. Each selection is prefaced by a brief introduction by the editors, providing a philosophical and religious background to help make the material more accessible to the reader. This edition, updated throughout, contains a substantial new chapter on medieval psychology and philosophy of mind, with texts from authors not previously represented such as John Buridan and Peter John Olivi.
