Book excerpt: When Amelia Earhart disappeared on July 2, 1937, she was flying the longest leg of her around-the-world flight and was only days away from completing her journey. Her plane was never found, and for more than sixty years rumors have persisted about what happened to her. Now, with the recent discovery of long-lost radio messages from Earhart's final flight, we can say with confidence that she ran out of gas just short of her destination of Howland Island in the Pacific Ocean. From the beginning of her flight, a series of tragic circumstances all but doomed her and her navigator, Fred Noonan. Authors Elgen M. and Marie K. Long spent more than twenty-five years researching the mystery surrounding Earhart's final flight before finally determining what happened. They traveled over one hundred thousand miles to interview more than one hundred people who knew some part of the Earhart story. They draw on authoritative sources to take us inside the cockpit of the Electra plane that Earhart flew and recreate the final flight itself. Because Elgen Long began his own flying career not long after Earhart's disappearance, he can describe the equipment and conditions of the time with a vivid first-hand accuracy. As a result, this book brings to life the primitive conditions under which Earhart flew, in an era before radar, with unreliable communications, grass landing strips, and poorly mapped islands. Amelia Earhart: The Mystery Solved does more than just answer the question, What happened to Amelia Earhart? It reminds us how daring early aviators such as Earhart were as they risked their lives to push the technology of the day to its limits -- and beyond.

Book excerpt: In this brilliantly imagined novel, Amelia Earhart tells us what happened after she and her navigator, Fred Noonan, disappeared off the coast of New Guinea one glorious, windy day in 1937. And she tells us about herself. There is her love affair with flying ("The sky is flesh") . . . . There are her memories of the past: her childhood desire to become a heroine ("Heroines did what they wanted") . . . her marriage to G.P. Putnam, who promoted her to fame, but was willing to gamble her life so that the book she was writing about her round-the-world flight would sell out before Christmas. There is the flight itself -- day after magnificent or perilous or exhilarating or terrifying day ("Noonan once said any fool could have seen I was risking my life but not living it"). And there is, miraculously, an island ("We named it Heaven, as a kind of joke"). And, most important, there is Noonan . . .

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What Happened To Amelia Earhart? What happened to Amelia Earhart has topped unsolved mystery lists for decades. She is known by most as the woman who vanished without a trace over the Pacific ocean, never to be seen again. She certainly is that. However, Amelia Earhart is so much more than just an unsolved mystery. She was an influential trailblazer, an inspirational feminist, and a woman who faced all challenges without fear. In the 1920s, aviation was still in its infancy. Men had not yet staked their claim as the dominant gender in the field, as they had in so many others. This by no means made men and women equal in the pursuit of conquering the sky. Women were still expected to settle down and start families rather than making careers for themselves., especially in more adventurous pursuits. However, it did mean that women could get a foot in the door, and write their own stories in the history of aviation before it became dominated by men. Amelia Earhart was not only a famed woman pilot, looking to make her mark in aviation, she was also an avid supporter of other women looking to do the same. She took every opportunity to boost fellow aviatrices, and encourage women to follow their passions. She said, "Women should do for themselves what men have already done-occasionally what men have not done-thereby establishing themselves as persons, and perhaps encouraging other women toward greater independence of thought and action. Some such consideration was a contributing reason for my wanting to do what I so much wanted to do." Earhart lived her life by this quotation; always encouraging women to break the glass ceiling in all areas of aviation and beyond, while setting astonishing records and performing incredible feats herself. The mystery of Earhart's disappearance is certainly interesting, but what is even more fascinating is the story of a woman who relentlessly chased her dreams in a world that constantly expected her to settle down; a woman who set an astonishing number of records for women pilots, but never begrudged another aviatrix an accomplishment; a woman who died pushing boundaries and opening doors for pilots everywhere. This is her story.
