Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book makes an original contribution to the understanding of perception verbs and the treatment of argument structure, and offers new insights on lexical causation, evidentiality, and processes of cognition. Perception verbs - such as look, see, taste, hear, feel, sound, and listen - present unresolved problems for theories of lexical semantics. This book examines the relations between their semantics and syntactic behaviour, the different kinds of polysemy they exhibit, and the role of evidentiality in verbs like seem and sound. In unravelling their complexity Nikolas Gisborne looks closely at their meanings, modality, semantic relatedness, and irregularity. He frames his exposition in Word Grammar, and draws extensively on work in cognitive linguistics and construction grammar. After an opening chapter explaining the nature of the issues, Dr Gisborne presents a concise introduction to Word Grammar. He then considers the implications of his approach for a general theory of event structure. He looks at how the framework may be applied to causation, argument linking, and the modelling of polysemy. He examines the semantic similarities and differences between listen- and hear-class verbs, and analyses the cognate patterns of sound-class verbs. He concludes by drawing together his findings and exploring their implications for linguistic theory. Clearly and readably written, with each point of the argument illustrated with well-chosen examples, this book will appeal to linguists of all theoretical persuasions at graduate level and above.

Book excerpt: Marriage vows! Sincere words that are filled with joy, anticipation, and hope. We are in love. Keeping our promise to forever love and cherish our husbands will come easily and naturally. Really? Not really. What comes easily and naturally is focusing on ourselves instead of each other. We need the Lord’s help. We learn that marriage takes three. In The Exceptional Wife, author Barbara Spell shares what God says about a wife’s role in marriage. They are words that can change us and the way we look at our husbands. They are words that help us make sense out of the most difficult areas of marriage. They are words the Bible uses—words like helper, headship, submission, and respect. What do these words mean in today’s world? Why do we naturally resist the very words that can give life to our marriages? The Exceptional Wife addresses these issues with practical and powerful examples. God’s love and encouragement speak in every chapter.

Book excerpt: The 5,000 years old ancient wisdom of Bhagavad Gita comprising of 700 verses was given by God-incarnate Sri Krishna many centuries before the emergence of Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Sikhism, Judaism and other religions. Gita explains the characteristics of body and soul, Moksha, Nirvana, Self-realization and Karma. Everything said in Bhagavad Gita is of universal nature and applies to all human beings, irrespective of ones caste, religion, age, gender or beliefs. Great spiritual texts like Bhagavad Gita and Upanishads do not belong to one particular culture only; but they belong to the whole world. Every human being has this fundamental question, as to why I am here on this earth? What is the purpose of my life? Is my destiny inextricably linked with the will of God? An in depth study of Gita verses provides the answers to these questions. Dr. Arogyaswami Paulraj, Professor Emeritus, Stanford University, United States wrote, This book is a commendable work of illuminating the universal values of Bhagavad Gita with illustrations of interesting spiritual stories. An absorbing book and a great read, RS Vasan, Director Chennai Centre for Asia Studies wrote in a review, Ajay Gupta has brought out the profound and eternal teaching of Bhagavad Gita as a thoroughly enjoyable book. A must read book of surpassing excellence for both young and old.

The short stories are practical revelations of the natural, correlating with the spiritual. Each day that I wrote a story, I consulted the Lord about what to write, and I asked for divine intervention. It not only touches the heart, but meant to move you into a new realm of life in him.

Book excerpt: This book comprises studies of six leading West German novelists, Gerd Gaiser, Wolfgang Koeppen, Heinrich Boll, Gunter Grass, Martin Walser and Uwe Johnson. The analysis of their work involves preoccupation with the social reality underlying their themes and attitudes, with the tension between the writer and society, with the writer as intellectual, and with the problem of commitment. Form and language are closely examined, often in connection with the predominant problem of identity and role-playing. These studies involve cross-references to other writers in and outside Germany, and serve also as the basis for the discussion of such matters as the writer’s position in the pluralistic society and his relation to the mass-media, ideology and authority.

Book excerpt: Includes the plays The Kitchen, The Rocking Horse Kid, Denial and When God Wanted a Son This volume of Oberon Books' Wesker series includes the author's most performed work The Kitchen (1957) produced in sixty cities from Rio de Janeiro to Tokyo, from Paris to Moscow, from Montreal to Zurich. This volume also contains Wesker's latest play The Rocking Horse Kid, about a black boy who wants to go round the world on a horse; the magical play for children Voices on the Wind and one of his most controversial plays Denial about 'the false memory syndrome' declared by an irate French critic of the Paris production '...a dangerous play.Wesker is a dangerous playwright.' He has also been described as 'a melancholy optimist' as evidenced by another of the plays in thisvolume When God Wanted a Son which explores the possibility that anti-Semitism like stupidity is in the bloodstream of human nature and here to stay. Few playwrights dare be as politically incorrect as Wesker.
