Book excerpt: For centuries, jetties and wharfs have been designed and built around the world and play an important role in contemporary ports. The difference in the use of jetties, piers and wharfs is that jetties are frequently used for the transhipment and storage of light materials and ro-ro traffic, while piers are generally used for heavy loads like iron ore. That is why piers are mostly designed and constructed like quay walls (which are beyond the scope of this handbook). The designs were originally based on trial and error and the insights of those who dared to conquer local conditions, such as wind, waves, currents and soil composition. Design and construction techniques have since evolved into the designs we see on the coast or in river ports and seaports nowadays. The purpose of this handbook is to provide insight and guidelines regarding aspects that are important in the design of jetties and wharfs. Jetty-specific issues such as loads, interfaces between materials, installations on jetties and wharfs, as well as detailing aspects, are also covered. This handbook is part of a series of Dutch port infrastructure design recommendations that include the Quay Walls handbook and Jetties and Wharfs handbook.

Book Synopsis Design Criteria for Pier and Wharf Construction by : R. E. D. Dot RED DOT PUBLICATIONS
Download or read book Design Criteria for Pier and Wharf Construction written by R. E. D. Dot RED DOT PUBLICATIONS and published by . This book was released on 2017-12-07 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This manual contains descriptions and design criteria for pier and wharf construction, including subsidiary, contiguous, and auxiliary structures. Loading details, regulations, furnishings, appurtenances, and other information are discussed when applicable. It provides minimum facility planning and design criteria for efficient homeporting facilities of Naval vessels. Existing ports, facilities, and berths may not meet all criteria and may, therefore, perform less efficiently, but do not necessarily require upgrade. It also focuses on the entire homeport operation. For example, ships will visit fueling and ammunition piers for short periods but generally berth at general purpose berthing piers.

Book Synopsis Green Building Handbook: Volume 1 by : Tom Woolley
Download or read book Green Building Handbook: Volume 1 written by Tom Woolley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-09-11 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmentally responsible building involves resolving many conflicting issues and requirements. Each stage in the design process from the fundamental decisions about what, where and even whether to build has implications for the environment. Evolving out of the success of Green Building Digest, a publication described by Building Design as well-researched, authoritative and exhaustive, this practical new handbook considers the environmental issues which relate to the production, use and disposal of key building products and materials. It is designed to help specifiers and purchasers gain awareness of the potential environmental impact of their decisions. Chapter by chapter Green Building Handbook looks at a different sector of the trade from flooring to roofing, comparing the environmental effects of commonly available products with less well known green alternatives. A Best Buy section then ranks these products from lowest to highest impact.
Book Synopsis The Modular Housing Handbook by : Simon Bayliss
Download or read book The Modular Housing Handbook written by Simon Bayliss and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-08-31 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modular construction has the potential to improve housing quality, speed up delivery and reduce building costs – so why isn’t everyone doing it? This practical handbook combines real-world advice on designing modular housing with a compelling argument for off-site construction as a means for architects taking a greater role and achieving more influence in their housing projects. Focusing on the benefits as well as the challenges of modular construction, this book illustrates that off-site construction need not act as a design constraint and can in fact provide an opportunity for greater design impact. Richly illustrated with recent case studies and featuring over 100 photographs of exemplar projects, The Modular Housing Handbook provides inspiration as well as timely, practical advice.
