Book excerpt: Wetlands law operates at the junction of private property rights and natural resource protection. While wetlands provide rich and diverse species habitat, protecting and promoting water quality, the vast majority of U.S. wetlands are on private property. Federal law addresses wetlands protection and development in a complex manner. Those interested in protecting wetlands or developing wetland property must navigate challenging legal waters. The "Wetlands Deskbook" organizes wetlands law for the novice and experts. This must-have reference book combines insights from one of the nation s premier wetlands experts and provides all the background materials needed. This Fourth Edition includes updates on the most recent court decisions, agency policies, and regulations, such as implications for endangered species and the U.S. Department of the Interior mitigation strategies. The authors have also added a new section identifying practical tips and pitfalls in wetlands law. Margaret Peggy Strand is a partner at Venable, LLP in Washington, D.C. Ms. Strand has substantial experience advising on the regulatory requirements of federal and state law, including wetlands, natural resources, protected species, climate change, and pollution control. She was Chief of the Environmental Defense Section in the U.S. Justice Department, Environmental and Natural Resources Division, from 1984 to 1991, and served as a Justice Department trial attorney and supervisor since 1976. She is past chair of the American Bar Association s Water Quality and Wetlands Committee, Section on Environment, Energy, and Resources Law and serves on the ALI-ABA Advisory Committee on Environmental Law. She is a regular chair and speaker on wetlands and species protection topics for ALI-ABA and other bar organizations. Lowell Rothschild, Senior Counsel at Bracewell & Giuliani LLP, is an environmental litigator focusing on natural resource issues such as wetlands, endangered species, and environmental review. For over 20 years, he has represented private, public, governmental and quasi-governmental clients working in the oil and gas, natural resource extraction, and infrastructure development sectors in obtaining and defending permits and responding to allegations of legal noncompliance, through both internal investigations and litigation. Mr. Rothschild s practice has included cases before the U.S. Supreme Court, multiple federal circuit and district courts, and EPA and Department of the Interior administrative tribunals."

Book excerpt: This book is intended as a practical guide to scientific, legal, and technical issues concerning wetlands. As such, it is written in the most practical terms, with numerous helpful examples and case studies of how specific issues should best be addressed. The book is organized in a way that exposes the reader in logical succession to the full gamut of complex scientific, legal, and technical aspects of wetlands. This book recognizes that wetland science, law, and technology are interdependent disciplines. Most other works focus on one of these disciplines while perhaps providing some cursory treatment of related disciplines. This book attempts to meld several different perspectives on the subject of wetlands and to show the interrelationships between the various professions that deal with wetland issues. The book is organized as a guide through the various scientific, legal, and technical components of wetlands. Within each individual chapter, extensive cross-referencing is provided to help the reader link related aspects of the issue being discussed. Further, within the presentation of each separate chapter is a discussion of how the various scientific, legal, and technical aspects of the subject interrelate. Each chapter has been written by a known authority with specialized experience in the topic being presented.

Book excerpt: Wetland Habitatsis a practical manual that puts developments in the field of wetland restoration and conservation of diverse animal species into plain English, placing much of the more recent work in this field into a single, coherent and user-friendly framework. As with Planting Wetlands and Dams, the text explains the various approaches to and aspects of each problem, so that readers will be able to make informed decisions about managing wetlands on their own properties. Although the examples are drawn from a wide range of wetland animals, including some which aren't necessarily found in wetlands on private properties, the primary emphasis will be on species and aspects of management that are likely to be of most use to landholders with wetlands to be restored, or species in need of conservation. The plants and planting aspects of created wetlands and dams are dealt with in detail in the second edition of Planting Wetlands and Dams. Key features: * Reversing the effects of drainage, grazing, weirs, deteriorating water quality and associated algal problems, and allowing for global warming and sea level rises * Setting realistic targets for wetland restoration and longer-term goals for management * Understanding natural change in wetlands - seasonal, ecological and chemical

Book excerpt: Authored by world-class scientists and scholars, The Handbook of Natural Resources, Second Edition, is an excellent reference for understanding the consequences of changing natural resources to the degradation of ecological integrity and the sustainability of life. Based on the content of the bestselling and CHOICE-awarded Encyclopedia of Natural Resources, this new edition demonstrates the major challenges that the society is facing for the sustainability of all well-being on the planet Earth. The experience, evidence, methods, and models used in studying natural resources are presented in six stand-alone volumes, arranged along the main systems of land, water, and air. It reviews state-of-the-art knowledge, highlights advances made in different areas, and provides guidance for the appropriate use of remote sensing and geospatial data with field-based measurements in the study of natural resources. Volume 3, Wetlands and Habitats, provides fundamental information on wetlands and their integral functions as a productive ecosystem. The topics it covers include wetlands biodiversity, wetlands classification and monitoring, floods, river ecosystems, pollution, and more. New to this edition are discussions on wetland vegetation, assessment of current wetland health status, restoration, sea-level rises and coastal storm, vulnerability to human impacts, and lakes and wetlands remote sensing. This volume demonstrates the key processes, methods, and models used through many case studies from around the world. Written in an easy-to-reference manner, The Handbook of Natural Resources, Second Edition, as individual volumes or as a complete set, is an essential reading for anyone looking for a deeper understanding of the science and management of natural resources. Public and private libraries, educational and research institutions, scientists, scholars, and resource managers will benefit enormously from this set. Individual volumes and chapters can also be used in a wide variety of both graduate and undergraduate courses in environmental science and natural science at different levels and disciplines, such as biology, geography, earth system science, and ecology.

Book excerpt: Where can you find mosses that change landscapes, salamanders with algae in their skin, and carnivorous plants containing whole ecosystems in their furled leaves? Where can you find swamp-trompers, wildlife watchers, marsh managers, and mud-mad scientists? In wetlands, those complex habitats that play such vital ecological roles. In Wading Right In, Catherine Owen Koning and Sharon M. Ashworth take us on a journey into wetlands through stories from the people who wade in the muck. Traveling alongside scientists, explorers, and kids with waders and nets, the authors uncover the inextricably entwined relationships between the water flows, natural chemistry, soils, flora, and fauna of our floodplain forests, fens, bogs, marshes, and mires. Tales of mighty efforts to protect rare orchids, restore salt marshes, and preserve sedge meadows become portals through which we visit major wetland types and discover their secrets, while also learning critical ecological lessons. The United States still loses wetlands at a rate of 13,800 acres per year. Such loss diminishes the water quality of our rivers and lakes, depletes our capacity for flood control, reduces our ability to mitigate climate change, and further impoverishes our biodiversity. Koning and Ashworth’s stories captivate the imagination and inspire the emotional and intellectual connections we need to commit to protecting these magical and mysterious places.
