Book excerpt: Don Maximo Alanes was awarded a land grant from the king of Spain in 1843 known as El Rancho San Jose de Buenos Aires, stretching east-west from what is now Sawtelle Boulevard to Beverly Hills, and from Sunset to Pico Boulevards. Preserved into the 20th century under state senator John Wolfskill's ownership, the rancho was sold to Broadway Department Store founder Arthur Letts for $100 an acre in 1920 for estates he called Holmby Hills after his British birthplace. His son-in-law Harold Janss developed Westwood Hills in the southern tracts. Letts, a former trustee of the Los Angeles State Normal School, which became UCLA, agreed in 1925 to deed 375 acres of the hilly ranch land north of Wilshire Boulevard to the college. Janss developed a university town-style commercial village of 26 Spanish Revival buildings, some with towers and neon signs that remain icons of today's Westwood Village.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the American Planning Association’s most popular and influential books is finally in paperback, with a new preface from the author on how thinking about parking has changed since this book was first published. In this no-holds-barred treatise, Donald Shoup argues that free parking has contributed to auto dependence, rapid urban sprawl, extravagant energy use, and a host of other problems. Planners mandate free parking to alleviate congestion but end up distorting transportation choices, debasing urban design, damaging the economy, and degrading the environment. Ubiquitous free parking helps explain why our cities sprawl on a scale fit more for cars than for people, and why American motor vehicles now consume one-eighth of the world's total oil production. But it doesn't have to be this way. Shoup proposes new ways for cities to regulate parking – namely, charge fair market prices for curb parking, use the resulting revenue to pay for services in the neighborhoods that generate it, and remove zoning requirements for off-street parking. Such measures, according to the Yale-trained economist and UCLA planning professor, will make parking easier and driving less necessary. Join the swelling ranks of Shoupistas by picking up this book today. You'll never look at a parking spot the same way again.

Book excerpt: This book demonstrates the value of ethnographic theory and methods in understanding space and place, and considers how ethnographically-based spatial analyses can yield insight into prejudices, inequalities and social exclusion as well as offering people the means for understanding the places where they live, work, shop and socialize. In developing the concept of spatializing culture, Setha Low draws on over twenty years of research to examine social production, social construction, embodied, discursive, emotive and affective, as well as translocal approaches. A global range of fieldwork examples are employed throughout the text to highlight not just the theoretical development of the idea of spatializing culture, but how it can be used in undertaking ethnographies of space and place. The volume will be valuable for students and scholars from a number of disciplines who are interested in the study of culture through the lens of space and place.

Dianne is enchanted with his remarkable baritone voice. After an intense fourteen-day courtship, she moves into his apartment. For Dianne, the first three months of their relationship is sheer bliss, a series of Hollywood banquets, parties, and hilarious housekeeping. Dianne learns the meaning of celebrity. Only references to ex-wife Rita Hayworth mar her excitement and break the spell. The two lovers are confident, in spite of Richard's health and financial problems, ex wives, and drinking. A second chance has been granted to them. Dianne flies to Detroit for the closing night of the Big Broadcast of 1944 with Harry James, starring Dick Haymes. Sitting on the edge of her seat in the audience, Dianne realizes Haymes has been drinking to find the strength to go on stage. The last song he ever sings is for her-:"The More I See You." Haymes tells the press from his hosipital bed when asked if he is ready to go, "I've had it all, known everybody, had everything except love. Now I have that, too." He glances at Dianne who is devastated. The morning after his death, she finds a single red rose wrapped in baby's breath on her doorstep with a card-"In Memory of Love." She knows it's from Haymes, who guides Dianne to Hawaii, Alaska, and Findhorn, Scotland. She learns life does exist after death and unconditional love lasts forever.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the story of a well-traveled and well-informed American expatriate woman, Sybilla Green Dorros. It’s recounted in chapters — one for each place she lived — starting in Chevy Chase, Maryland, and ending in San Diego, California. While the bookend chapters are set in the United States, most of the locations are global. Four of them involved assignments with her family of origin (her parents and the earlier ones with her two sisters): Paris, Léopoldville, Accra, and Casablanca. Two were on her own: Rome and her first stint in Geneva. The last two, and the longest sojourns spanning nearly a quarter century, were in Manila and back in Geneva with her family by marriage (her husband and three children). Each relocation — to disparate countries at different stages of her life — presented new sets of challenges. This book reveals how she tackled these challenges and how she felt — and continues to feel — at home almost anywhere but with nowhere to truly call home.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few people can claim careers in two biblical professions: minister and tax collector. In his captivating memoir, Adventures of an Ordinary Man, William Lee Goff shares the triumphs and tragedies of his life as both a Presbyterian minister and an IRS Revenue Agent. Goff writes unpretentiously with deep humanity and subtle humor about his life's adventures: learning to play the cello from a freedom fighter; overcoming his fears to become an amateur stage actor; and traveling in South Africa, Israel, Russia and Denmark. Adventures of an Ordinary Man is a compelling and rewarding read. Although a native of St. Louis, Missouri, William Lee Goff spent his formative years in Los Angeles, California. He earned a bachelor's degree in English from UCLA and then went on to Fuller Theological Seminary where he completed a Doctor of Ministry degree. Goff has had dual careers, one as an ordained Presbyterian minister who served as pastor in churches in California, Colorado, and Idaho. His alter ego had a nearly 25-year career with the IRS. Goff lives with his wife, Tatyana, in Southern California.
