Book Synopsis Blue Water Navy Vietnam Veterans and Agent Orange Exposure by : Institute of Medicine
Download or read book Blue Water Navy Vietnam Veterans and Agent Orange Exposure written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2011-07-01 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over 3 million U.S. military personnel were sent to Southeast Asia to fight in the Vietnam War. Since the end of the Vietnam War, veterans have reported numerous health effects. Herbicides used in Vietnam, in particular Agent Orange have been associated with a variety of cancers and other long term health problems from Parkinson's disease and type 2 diabetes to heart disease. Prior to 1997 laws safeguarded all service men and women deployed to Vietnam including members of the Blue Navy. Since then, the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) has established that Vietnam veterans are automatically eligible for disability benefits should they develop any disease associated with Agent Orange exposure, however, veterans who served on deep sea vessels in Vietnam are not included. These "Blue Water Navy" veterans must prove they were exposed to Agent Orange before they can claim benefits. At the request of the VA, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) examined whether Blue Water Navy veterans had similar exposures to Agent Orange as other Vietnam veterans. Blue Water Navy Vietnam Veterans and Agent Orange Exposure comprehensively examines whether Vietnam veterans in the Blue Water Navy experienced exposures to herbicides and their contaminants by reviewing historical reports, relevant legislation, key personnel insights, and chemical analysis to resolve current debate on this issue.

Book Synopsis British Aircraft Carriers 1939–45 by : Angus Konstam
Download or read book British Aircraft Carriers 1939–45 written by Angus Konstam and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-12-20 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With war against Germany looming, Britain pushed forward its carrier program in the late 1930s. In 1938, the Royal Navy launched the HMS Ark Royal, its first-ever purpose-built aircraft carrier. This was quickly followed by others, including the highly-successful Illustrious class. Smaller and tougher than their American cousins, the British carriers were designed to fight in the tight confines of the North Sea and the Mediterranean. Over the next six years, these carriers battled the Axis powers in every theatre, attacking Italian naval bases, hunting the Bismark, and even joining the fight in the Pacific. This book tells the story of the small, but resilient, carriers and the crucial role they played in the British war effort.
Download or read book Adak written by Andrew C A Jampoler and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2011-11-15 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the tradition of great tales of men against the sea, Adak offers a compelling look at courage and commitment in the face of certain tragedy. Alfa Foxtrot 586 was a P-3 Orion on station on a sensitive Cold War mission off the Kamchatka Peninsula on 26 October 1978. When a propeller malfunction turned into an engine fire, the pilot was forced to ditch his turboprop into the empty, mountainous seas west of the Aleutian Islands. The aircraft went down in just ninety seconds, taking one of the three rafts with it. Thirteen men launched the other rafts, the smallest of which—terribly overcrowded—soon began to leak, threatening the nine men aboard. This account of the flight crew's desperate battle against the sea, and the heroic efforts to rescue them provide an engrossing true story of survival.
Book Synopsis Admiral Arleigh (31-Knot) Burke by : Ken Jones
Download or read book Admiral Arleigh (31-Knot) Burke written by Ken Jones and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2014-01-15 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by two World War II veterans who later became well-known war correspondents, this biography records the inspiring life of one of America's great naval heroes. Popularly referred to as "31-Knot" Burke, Admiral Arleigh Burke fought savage battles at sea and won every decoration a grateful nation could bestow, yet his service to his country was not in combat alone. This book is at once a stirring testament to Burke's World War II record as a combat leader and to his talents as a diplomat at the armistice table in Korea and as a politician in Washington. It details his legendary victories with DESRON 23 in the Pacific and his development of high-speed night tactics for destroyers that resulted in what many call the perfect naval engagement at the Battle of Cape St. George. Burke's most enduring contributions occurred during his unprecedented three terms as chief of naval operations when he directed the Navy's technical development during its revolutionary change from steam and gunpowder to nuclear concepts in ships, weaponry, strategy, and tactics. Published soon after Burke's retirement from the Navy in 1961, the book has remained a standard reference for four decades.

Book Synopsis 101 Sea Stories by : Donald F. Myers
Download or read book 101 Sea Stories written by Donald F. Myers and published by . This book was released on 2008-02-01 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born in San Francisco, California, Lewis Rabin has been a full time surfer and avid motorcyclist for many years. He along with his dad, David Rabin, has run many businesses while also attending several colleges in California and Hawaii. Along with his sister, Elicia, he has traveled extensively through the United States and Europe. This narrative caps a culmination of world travel and many visits to different universities worldwide. The narrative, although short in length, is a looking glass into the daily lives of many folks here and in our neighboring countries around the world. All About Amy illustrates the regular person's struggle to belong. In modern day society we seem to lose sight of our basic human instinct to form a genuine human link to other people. All About Amy in its simplicity breaks through that barrier and lets us see ourselves always looking for that elusive companionship and never quite finding it. In modern day society we get lost in cellular text messaging and with electronic data. We forget many times why we are here and what is most important. All About Amy leaves behind the day to day monotony of modern day existence and reaches out to the human compassion that somehow we lost in the 20th century.
