Book excerpt: To lend weight to his charge that the public school teacher has been betrayed and gravity to his indictment of the educational establishment for that betrayal, Jurgen Herbst goes back to the beginnings of teacher education in America in the 1830s and traces its evolution up to the 1920s, by which time the essential damage had been done. Initially, attempts were made to upgrade public school teaching to a genuine profession, but that ideal was gradually abandoned. In its stead, with the advent of newly emerging graduate schools of education in the early decades of the twentieth century, came the so-called professionalization of public education. At the expense of the training of elementary school teachers (mostly women), teacher educators shifted their attention to the turning out of educational "specialists" (mostly men)--administrators, faculty members at normal schools and teachers colleges, adult education teachers, and educational researchers. Ultimately a history of the neglect of the American public school teacher, And Sadly Teach ends with a plea and a message that ring loud and clear. The plea: that the current reform proposals for American teacher education--the Carnegie and the Holmes reports--be heeded. The message: that the key to successful school reform lies in educating teacher's true professionals and in acknowledging them as such in their classrooms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A man of as many names as motives, Edward Bancroft is a singular figure in the history of Revolutionary America. Born in Massachusetts in 1745, Bancroft moved to England as a young man in the 1760s and began building a respectable resume as both a scientist and a man of letters. In recognition of his works in natural history, Bancroft was unanimously elected to the Royal Society, and while working to secure French aid for the American Revolution, he became a close associate of such luminaries as Benjamin Franklin, Silas Deane, and John Adams. Though lauded in his time as a staunch American patriot, when the British diplomatic archives were opened in the late nineteenth century, it was revealed that Bancroft led a secret life as a British agent acting against French and American interests. In this book, the first complete biography of Bancroft, historian Thomas J. Schaeper reveals the full extent of the agent's deception during the crucial years of the American Revolution. Operating under aliases, working in ciphers, and leaving coded messages in the trees of Paris's Tuileries Gardens, Bancroft filtered information from unsuspecting figures including Franklin and Deane back to his contacts in Britain, navigating a complicated web of political allegiances. Through Schaeper's keen analysis of Bancroft's correspondence and diplomatic records, this biography reveals whether Bancroft should ultimately be considered a traitor to America or a patriot to Britain.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A stirring story, much more humanly complicated than any Cooper had to tell, or indeed than has been told by previous historian. . . . Individual anecdotes Frzier has turned up might be the subjects of whole novels."--Boston Globe. "With extensive research in primary sources, Frazier's account deserves praise for its insights into the uncharted waters of eighteenth-century Indian history."--Choice "Immortalized by James Fenimore Cooper in The Last of the Mohicans, the Mohicans Indians originated in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. Frazier, a specialist in Native American studies with the Library of Congress, presents a detailed, scholarly account of these Indians; he hopes to make his readers aware of the contributions they made to American history. He covers the Mohicans' conversion to Christianity and the ramifications this had for them. He examines the various ways they interacted with the settlers, both Dutch and New Englanders, in trading, and as soldiers and victims of expansion and alcohol. Frazier has done extensive research and uses solid documentation."--Library Journal "The calm suggestiveness of The Mohicans of Stockbridge makes it a model for future studies of native peoples."--Times Literary Supplement. Patrick Frazier has been employed by the Library of Congress since 1959, most recently as a reference specialist on North American Indians. His publications include Portrait Index of North American Indians in Published Collections and a forthcoming guide to North American Indian collections in the Library of Congress.
