Book excerpt: This study was conducted to determine the relationship between Westernized media on both eating attitudes and body image across culture. It was hypothesized that exposure to Westernized media would be related to the presence of negative eating attitudes and distorted body image. These variables were measured with tools that assessed demographics, eating attitudes, media exposure and effects, body image, and parental bonding. Samples were taken from universities in the United States, Iran, and India. For the sample as a whole, it was found that media exposure alone does not have a significant association with eating attitudes but has a negative relationship with body image. A negative correlation was found between disordered eating attitudes and media exposure in the Iranian sample. Exploratory analyses found that there was a relationship between eating attitudes and internalization of media exposure and perceived pressure from this exposure in the US sample. A relationship was found between media pressure and the perception of being overweight in the sample from India with a relationship also between appearance orientation and both media internalization and pressure. A relationship was also found between media pressure and the perception of being overweight in Iran. Parental bonding correlations with eating attitudes differed across countries.
