Book Synopsis Flora's Empire by : Eugenia W. Herbert

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like their penchant for clubs, cricket, and hunting, the planting of English gardens by the British in India reflected an understandable need on the part of expatriates to replicate home as much as possible in an alien environment. In Flora's Empire, Eugenia W. Herbert argues that more than simple nostalgia or homesickness lay at the root of this "garden imperialism," however. Drawing on a wealth of period illustrations and personal accounts, many of them little known, she traces the significance of gardens in the long history of British relations with the subcontinent. To British eyes, she demonstrates, India was an untamed land that needed the visible stamp of civilization that gardens in their many guises could convey. Colonial gardens changed over time, from the "garden houses" of eighteenth-century nabobs modeled on English country estates to the herbaceous borders, gravel walks, and well-trimmed lawns of Victorian civil servants. As the British extended their rule, they found that hill stations like Simla offered an ideal retreat from the unbearable heat of the plains and a place to coax English flowers into bloom. Furthermore, India was part of the global network of botanical exploration and collecting that gathered up the world's plants for transport to great imperial centers such as Kew. And it is through colonial gardens that one may track the evolution of imperial ideas of governance. Every Government House and Residency was carefully landscaped to reflect current ideals of an ordered society. At Independence in 1947 the British left behind a lasting legacy in their gardens, one still reflected in the design of parks and information technology campuses and in the horticultural practices of home gardeners who continue to send away to England for seeds.

Book Synopsis British Women Writers and the Asiatic Society of Bengal, 1785-1835 by : Dr Kathryn S Freeman
Download or read book British Women Writers and the Asiatic Society of Bengal, 1785-1835 written by Dr Kathryn S Freeman and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2014-11-28 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In her study of newly recovered works by British women, Kathryn Freeman traces the literary relationship between women writers and the Asiatic Society of Bengal, otherwise known as the Orientalists. Distinct from their male counterparts of the Romantic period, who tended to mirror the Orientalist distortions of India, women writers like Phebe Gibbes, Elizabeth Hamilton, Sydney Owenson, Mariana Starke, Eliza Fay, Anna Jones, and Maria Jane Jewsbury interrogated these distortions from the foundation of gender. Freeman takes a three-pronged approach, arguing first that in spite of their marked differences, female authors shared a common resistance to the Orientalists’ intellectual genealogy that allowed them to represent Vedic non-dualism as an alternative subjectivity to the masculine model of European materialist philosophy. She also examines the relationship between gender and epistemology, showing that women’s texts not only shift authority to a feminized subjectivity, but also challenge the recurring Orientalist denigration of Hindu masculinity as effeminate. Finally, Freeman contrasts the shared concern about miscegenation between Orientalists and women writers, contending that the first group betrays anxiety about intermarriage between East Indian Company men and indigenous women while the varying portrayals of intermarriage by women show them poised to dissolve the racial and social boundaries. Her study invites us to rethink the Romantic paradigm of canonical writers as replicators of Orientalists’ cultural imperialism in favor of a more complicated stance that accommodates the differences between male and female authors with respect to India.

Book Synopsis Thomas Tooke and the Monetary Thought of Classical Economics by : Matthew Smith
Download or read book Thomas Tooke and the Monetary Thought of Classical Economics written by Matthew Smith and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2011-03-07 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to provide a comprehensive account and reconsideration of the contribution to political economy of Thomas Tooke (1774-1858), classical economist and influential monetary theorist. Its chief purpose is to examine Tooke’s contributions to political economy with the aim of bringing to light its unified nature and its important legacy to contemporary economics. In doing so the book aims to throw new light on monetary analysis within the framework of classical economics. There remains no comprehensive account of Tooke’s contributions that is concerned with showing his lasting and ongoing influence on the development of monetary thought. The book provides an interpretation and analytical study of Tooke’s political economy from the standpoint of the classical tradition. This enables a demonstration of how his constructive contribution throws a new light on monetary thought in this tradition.

Book Synopsis Empires of the Imagination by : Holger Hoock
Download or read book Empires of the Imagination written by Holger Hoock and published by Profile Books. This book was released on 2010-07-09 with total page 561 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between the mid-18th and mid-19th centuries, Britain evolved from a substantial international power yet relative artistic backwater into a global superpower and a leading cultural force in Europe. In this original and wide-ranging book, Hoock illuminates the manifold ways in which the culture of power and the power of culture were interwoven in this period of dramatic change. Britons invested artistic and imaginative effort to come to terms with the loss of the American colonies; to sustain the generation-long fight against Revolutionary and Napoleonic France; and to assert and legitimate their growing empire in India. Demonstrating how Britain fought international culture wars over prize antiquities from the Mediterranean and Near East, the book explores how Britons appropriated ancient cultures from the Mediterranean, the Near East, and India, and casts a fresh eye on iconic objects such as the Rosetta Stone and the Parthenon Marbles.
