Book Synopsis Embracing and Managing Change in Tourism by : Bill Faulkner
Download or read book Embracing and Managing Change in Tourism written by Bill Faulkner and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-09-02 with total page 589 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Embracing and Managing Change in Tourism examines management responses to the major changes taking place in international tourism and considers tourism itself as an agent of change. Including twenty-two detailed case studies from around the world this book explores two key principles. Firstly that change is enevitable and, if effectively managed, has the potential to benefit all those living in, working in and visiting the destination. Secondly, that there are no universal prescriptions for the effective management of change in tourism, since each destination has distinguishing characteristics and the nature of the problems facing it change over time.
Download or read book The West Indies written by John Mordecai and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-10-30 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 1968, The West Indies is the history of Federation in the British West Indies since 1920’s, in itself a fascinating story full of strong and colorful personalities; at the same time, it offers an incisive analysis of the reasons why Federations have proved so unstable in the post war world. It is unusual to have the story from a man who was both without any narrow allegiance and at the centre of events from 1952 up to the very end. Sir John Mordecai was in daily contact throughout with the leading figures and the crisis surrounding them. He served as Secretary General of the West Indies Regional Economic Committee which prepared the organic structure for political union and as Federal Secretary and chief official when parliamentary government and the Council of Ministers took control in 1958. His work brings into focus the local agitation after two world wars, the great island leaders who strode the scene as apostles of Federation, the years of strenuous negotiations and compromise leading to the creation of the Federation in 1958, the events culminating in its collapse after four fractious years, and finally, the bleak predicament in which the islands and their leaders found themselves when the dream of generations lay shattered. This exciting book is a must read for anyone interested in the history of the West Indies.

Book Synopsis Archipelago Tourism by : Godfrey Baldacchino
Download or read book Archipelago Tourism written by Godfrey Baldacchino and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-09 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring the conceptual insights provided by the archipelagic 'twist' in the context of tourism principles, policies and practices, this volume draws on an international series of case studies to analyse best practice in branding, marketing and logistics in archipelago tourist destinations. The book asks and seeks to answer such questions as: How to 'sell' a multi-island destination, without risking a message that may be too complex and diffuse for audiences to grab on to? Does one encourage visitors to do 'island hopping'; and, if so, how and with what logistic facilities? How does one ascribe specific island destinations within an overall archipelago brand? Would smaller islands rebel against a composite branding strategy that actually benefits other islands? How does one read or craft transport policies as a function of the 'reterritorialisation' of a multi-island space? This book pioneers the exploration of the archipelago as tourism study focus (and not just locus); a heuristic device for rendering islands as sites of different tourism practices, industries and policies, but also of challenges and possibilities.

Book Synopsis Tourism vs Environment by : P.P. Wong
Download or read book Tourism vs Environment written by P.P. Wong and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: P.P. Wong ABSTRACT Tourism is environmentally dependent. The unique character ofcoastal areas gives rise to a distinctive tourist development. Although accounts on the impacts ofcoastal tourism can be found in works relating to tourism in general, there are few works specifically on coastal tourism. This present volume focuses on the physical environment of coastal tourism, particularly the geomorphological aspects. The papers deal with basic aspects of the coastal environment for tourism, methodologies for assessing the coastal environment for tourism and empirical studies of various types of coastal environment with tourism development. The resultinggeneralisations are expected to be applied elsewhere. TOURISM AND ENVIRONMENT Environment has various meanings for tourism. In its broadest sense, the environment includes all natural and cultural elements as in OECD's (1981) definition to encompass the natural, built and cultural aspects. This holistic approach is encouraged in understanding the potential impacts arising from tourism. A narrower meaning of environment is the natural and built environment as used by Cohen (1978) and Inskeep (1991: 339). Environment can also be restricted to the natural or physical environment, in order to distinguish it from the economic and social aspects of tourism, as used by tourism researchers (e.g. Mathieson and Wall, 1982; Pearce, 1989). This approach is used predominantly in this volume. Various relationships between tourism and the physical aspects ofthe coast are discussed. There are basic relationships between environment and tourism. Tourism is environmentally dependent and the environment is vulnerable to the impact of tourism.
