Book Synopsis Sopolyrimu Volume 2 by : Marcus M Cornelius
Download or read book Sopolyrimu Volume 2 written by Marcus M Cornelius and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2009-09-16 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second volume of Sopolyrimu to be published. The poems could be called songs from the spirit, to awaken the spirit of compassion in the listener, and, from what I hear from those who have heard some of them, this seems to be indeed true. They are also songs of gratitude for the miracle of life, and laments for the way I and some others all too often trash this miracle by quite reckless and cruel behaviour and temporary or prolonged bouts of simply forgetting what on earth we are doing here, and the consequences of what we do and of forgetting how serious the consequences are. "Exquisitely beautiful, beyond superb" (MJ, Australia) "Hearing this (sopolyrimu) was like being touched by the divine" (EM, Spain) "The most imaginative and meaningful writing I have come across in many, many years" (PS, Japan) " imbued with a tranquil and peaceful certainty ..." Focusing on the politics of war memory and commemoration, the book illuminates the struggle to install particular memories at the centre of a cultural world, and offers an extensive argument about how the politics of commemoration practices should be understood.
Book Synopsis Translated Memories by : Ursula Reuter
Download or read book Translated Memories written by Ursula Reuter and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-02-26 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume engages with memory of the Holocaust as expressed in literature, film, and other media. It focuses on the cultural memory of the second and third generations of Holocaust survivors, while also taking into view those who were children during the Nazi period. Language loss, language acquisition, and the multiple needs of translation are recurrent themes for all of the authors discussed. By bringing together authors and scholars (often both) from different generations, countries, and languages, and focusing on transgenerational and translational issues, this book presents multiple perspectives on the subject of Holocaust memory, its impact, and its ongoing worldwide communication.

Book Synopsis Breaking the Dead Silence by : Christina Horvath
Download or read book Breaking the Dead Silence written by Christina Horvath and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2024-06-21 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Open Access edition will be available on publication. The murder of George Floyd in 2020, the renewed international take up of the cry Black Lives Matter and the subsequent toppling of a statue commemorating slave-merchant-turned-philanthropist Edward Colston in Bristol provoked urgent questions on memorialisation, white privilege, social justice and repair. Debates on how legacies of colonialism and empire in Britain should be addressed spilled out of the scholarly world into the public discourse. In the immediate wake of the statue toppling this book offers a unique, distinctive and timely contribution to those debates: a series of voices and experiences are offered as critical commentaries and accounts of recent interventions on an official heritage narrative. It sets out to break the ‘dead silence’, by bringing together diverse perspectives from academics, artists, activists, heritage professionals and tourist guides. The book offers fresh insights, referencing work attending to the impacts and legacies of colonisation primarily in Bath and Bristol, augmented with comparative contributions from Lancaster and Mexico offering significant and pertinent resonances. A range of strategies are explored towards enabling silenced voices to be heard and engage in conversations about how the past is represented, including Co-Creation, new agonistic museum practices, innovative creative and somatic approaches.

Book Synopsis Research as Social Change by : Michael Schratz
Download or read book Research as Social Change written by Michael Schratz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-07-08 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever thought research is boring? "Research" writes Umberto Eco "should be fun". It seems unlikely that Umberto Eco has read many of the standard social science or education research texts. But social research does offer the possibility of involvement in projects that are informative, sometimes revealing, and fun to do. This book shows us that teaching, learning and research are essentially social and deeply personal activities and that fun needs to be an integral part of this. This is not a conventional text, although it is about ways in which research can be used by those in various areas of professional practice. Its main concerns are with qualitative research, action research and case study methods, and it goes back to first principles arguing for research that is concerned with the nature of personal memories and of perception, the use of drawings and photographs, the emotional relationships implicit in any kind of research and the context of the contemporary workplace. The authors develop new directions and new possibilities for research and find ways of bringing together theory and practice, the personal and the social, organisations and their clients. It is an important resource for all who are interested in doing research but are sceptical or critical of most studies that are currently available.

Book Synopsis Drawing New Color Lines by : Monica Chiu
Download or read book Drawing New Color Lines written by Monica Chiu and published by Hong Kong University Press. This book was released on 2014-11-01 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global circulation of comics, manga, and other such visual mediums between North America and Asia produces transnational meanings no longer rooted in a separation between "Asian" and "American." Drawing New Color Lines explores the culture, production, and history of contemporary graphic narratives that depict Asian Americans and Asians. It examines how Japanese manga and Asian popular culture have influenced Asian American comics; how these comics and Asian American graphic narratives depict the "look" of race; and how these various representations are interpreted in nations not of their production. By focusing on what graphic narratives mean for audiences in North America and those in Asia, the collection discusses how Western theories about the ways in which graphic narratives might successfully overturn derogatory caricatures are themselves based on contested assumptions; and illustrates that the so-called odorless images featured in Japanese manga might nevertheless elicit interpretations about race in transnational contexts. With contributions from experts based in North America and Asia, Drawing New Color Lines will be of interest to scholars in a variety of disciplines, including Asian American studies, cultural and literary studies, comics and visual studies. "Drawing New Color Lines makes an exciting contribution to the rapidly expanding inquiry at the crossroads of Asian American literary studies, graphic narrative studies, and transnational studies. Foregrounding the shifting meanings of race within, across, and between various national contexts, the fifteen essays in Chiu's collection explore the visual dimensions of Asian American transnational literary culture with originality and offer particular insight into the complexities of production, interpretation, and reception for graphic narrative." — Pamela Thoma, author of Asian American Women's Popular Literature: Feminizing Genres and Neoliberal Belonging "An informative, smart, and necessary collection. Drawing New Color Lines investigates a growing and important field—transnational Asian American comics—with sophistication and breadth." — Hillary Chute, author of Graphic Women: Life Narrative and Contemporary Comics and Outside the Box: Interviews with Contemporary Cartoonists

Book Synopsis I Must Remember This by : George Thomas Youngblood
Download or read book I Must Remember This written by George Thomas Youngblood and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2006-08-09 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was the sober time of the Great Depression, World War II, and general want, but it was also a time to live and enjoy life as much as possible. The memories include two black men, our nearest neighbors, one of whom had a wife and a son. The hard times drew us together. My father was trying to succeed with his sawmill and store so he hired the black men to look after his farm and to look after us. Mama often helped in the store and or in the church so the black man's wife was often our housekeeper, cook, and second mother. The black couple's son was our playmate so the color line was indistinct and we lived on both sides of it. Segregation had crystallized around laws, customs, and public opinion. Some people made a science of it-unwritten but widespread views about what to do under various conditions. Jim Crow was harsh and we saw some horrible things making these memories all the more melancholy and all the more precious because we did some things right.
