Book Synopsis Block by Block by : Amanda I. Seligman
Download or read book Block by Block written by Amanda I. Seligman and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2005-05-10 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the decades following World War II, cities across the United States saw an influx of African American families into otherwise homogeneously white areas. This racial transformation of urban neighborhoods led many whites to migrate to the suburbs, producing the phenomenon commonly known as white flight. In Block by Block, Amanda I. Seligman draws on the surprisingly understudied West Side communities of Chicago to shed new light on this story of postwar urban America. Seligman's study reveals that the responses of white West Siders to racial changes occurring in their neighborhoods were both multifaceted and extensive. She shows that, despite rehabilitation efforts, deterioration in these areas began long before the color of their inhabitants changed from white to black. And ultimately, the riots that erupted on Chicago's West Side and across the country in the mid-1960s stemmed not only from the tribulations specific to blacks in urban centers but also from the legacy of accumulated neglect after decades of white occupancy. Seligman's careful and evenhanded account will be essential to understanding that the "flight" of whites to the suburbs was the eventual result of a series of responses to transformations in Chicago's physical and social landscape, occurring one block at a time.

Book excerpt: Based on primary source documents, this historical study establishes the interconnections between private violence and political, social, and economic life in New York from 1930-1950. By describing and analyzing both the social world and social system of organized crime, Block provides a new perspective, one based on racial and ethnic stereotypes. The book provides a penetrating look at one of the most misunderstood aspects of American society, important for historians, criminologists and sociologists.

Download or read book Condoland written by James T. White and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2023-05-31 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Condoland casts CityPlace – a massive residential development of more than thirty condominium towers just outside Toronto’s downtown core – as a microcosm of twenty-first-century urban intensification. Built almost entirely by a single private developer, this immense neighbourhood took decades to plan, design, and develop, but the end result lacks a sense of place and is not widely accessible to those who need homes: only a small number of its 13,000 units constitute affordable housing, and public amenities are limited. In this richly illustrated volume, James T. White and John Punter reveal the stories behind the design, architecture, and planning of CityPlace. They also consider the tools used to shape Toronto’s built environment and critically assess the underlying political economy of planning and real estate development in the city. Condoland raises key questions about the long-term sustainability and resilience of Canadian cities that acquiesce to the rapacious development industry.

This book was released on 2003-09-11 with total page 535 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nero's palace, the Domus Aurea (Golden House), is the most influential known building in the history of Roman architecture. It has been incompletely studied and poorly understood ever since its most important sections were excavated in the 1930s. In this book, Larry Ball provides systematic investigation of the Domus Aurea, including a comprehensive analysis of the masonry, the design, and the abundant ancient literary evidence. Highlighting the revolutionary innovations of the Domus Aurea, Ball also outlines their wide-ranging implications for the later development of Roman concrete architecture.
