Book excerpt: A company’s ability to best exploit performance potentials within buyer-supplier relationships has become a critical success factor in securing competition and improving a company's overall performance. One powerful attempt to meet this challenge can be found in the application of cross-company management accounting approaches in order to execute performance control. However, implementation of suitable mechanisms and execution of control activities across company boundaries – commonly executed by both partners – is often insufficient because actual improvement potentials are not identified correctly. Embedded in a contingency-based research framework, the author combines several statistical methods to empirically analyze causal relationships between performance and contingent performance-determinants. Resulting in a control process-oriented guideline, findings support companies in the design and use of performance control systems in buyer-supplier relationships and open the field for further research.

Book excerpt: "In The Origins of Nonliberal Capitalism, German sociologists and American and Japanese political scientists draw extensively on the work of economists and historians from their home countries, as well as from the United Kingdom and France. The contributors analyze the historical origins of nonliberal capitalism in Germany and Japan from two perspectives: the emergence and survival of a capitalism that does not assume liberal ideas and ideology; and the causes of difference between the systems of Germany and Japan. They also outline the requirements for internally coherent national models of an embedded capitalist economy."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: 'Management and Labour in Europe is virtually without peer in that it brings much of the latest literature in industrial relations and management studies to bear on the subject of how institutions at the micro level shape the political economy. I view it as essential reading for scholars of comparative political economy and European politics.' - Peter A. Hall, Harvard University, US 'Everywhere in the book, one gets the feeling of an authoritative grasp of facts, figures and meanings, but everything is placed in the proper context and has been weighted in relation to competing or complementary findings. . . . despite the complexity and richness of findings taken on board, I found that the text is easy and compelling to read.' - Arndt Sorge, Organization Studies

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As economic sectors of various advanced industrial societies suffer in response to a decline in global growth rates, scholars, policy analysts, and government officials in a variety of countries increasingly look beyond their national boundaries for more effective models of management and industrial policy. Governing Capitalist Economies: Performance and Control of Economic Sectors offers a comparative analysis of the coordination and control of industries in North America, Japan, and Western Europe and challenges neo-classical economists' assumptions about the efficaciousness of market mechanisms as a means of enhancing economic performance. The authors explore variation in state policies in the governance of internationally competitive industries (automobiles, chemicals, consumer electronics, and steel, for example) and demonstrate how variation in state policies influences the performance of industrial sectors. The authors argue that tightly controlled sectors outperform their less-regulated counterparts in the world economy. Governing Capitalist Economies begins with an introduction to capitalism, sectors, and institutions by the editors - J. Rogers Hollingsworth, Philippe C. Schmitter, and Wolfgang Streeck - which provides a general overview and background for the ten case studies that follow. This is a timely and topical study that will provide informative reading for scholars and students of political economy, political science, and business.
