Download or read book Radical written by David Platt and published by Multnomah. This book was released on 2010-05-04 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New York Times bestseller What is Jesus worth to you? It's easy for American Christians to forget how Jesus said his followers would actually live, what their new lifestyle would actually look like. They would, he said, leave behind security, money, convenience, even family for him. They would abandon everything for the gospel. They would take up their crosses daily... But who do you know who lives like that? Do you? In Radical, David Platt challenges you to consider with an open heart how we have manipulated the gospel to fit our cultural preferences. He shows what Jesus actually said about being his disciple--then invites you to believe and obey what you have heard. And he tells the dramatic story of what is happening as a "successful" suburban church decides to get serious about the gospel according to Jesus. Finally, he urges you to join in The Radical Experiment -- a one-year journey in authentic discipleship that will transform how you live in a world that desperately needs the Good News Jesus came to bring.
Book Synopsis Jewish Hymnography by : Leon J. Weinberger
Download or read book Jewish Hymnography written by Leon J. Weinberger and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 1997-12-01 with total page 517 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leon Weinberger draws on a wealth of material, much of it previously available only in Hebrew, to trace the history of Jewish hymnography from its origins in the eastern Mediterranean to its subsequent development in western Europe (Spain, Italy, Franco-Germany, and England) and Balkan Byzantium, on the Grecian periphery, under the Ottomans, and among the Karaites. Focusing on each region in turn, he provides a general background to the role of the synagogue poets in the society of the time; characterizes the principal poets and describes their contribution; examines the principal genres and forms; and considers their distinctive language, style, and themes. The copious excerpts from the liturgy are presented in transliterated Hebrew and in English translation, and their salient characteristics are fully discussed to bring out the historical development of ideas and regional themes as well as literary forms. Professor Weinberger’s study is a particularly valuable source-book for students of synagogue liturgy, Jewish worship, and medieval Hebrew poetry. It provides new perspectives for students of religious poetry and forms of worship more generally, while enabling the general reader to acquire a much-enriched appreciation of the synagogue services.

Book Synopsis A New Physiognomy of Jewish Thinking by : Aubrey L. Glazer
Download or read book A New Physiognomy of Jewish Thinking written by Aubrey L. Glazer and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2011-03-24 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New Physiognomy of Jewish Thinking is a search for authenticity that combines critical thinking with a yearning for heartfelt poetics. A physiognomy of thinking addresses the figure of a life lived where theory and praxis are unified. This study explores how the critical essays on music of German-Jewish thinker, Theodor Wiesengrund Adorno (1903-1969) necessarily accompany the downfall of metaphysics. By scrutinizing a critical juncture in modern intellectual history, marked in 1931 by Adorno's founding of the Frankfurt Institute for Social Research, neglected applications of Critical Theory to Jewish Thought become possible. This study proffers a constructive justification of a critical standpoint, reconstructively shown how such ideals are seen under the genealogical proviso of re/cognizing their original meaning. Re/cognition of A New Physiognomy of Jewish Thinking redresses neglected applications of Negative Dialectics, the poetics of God, the metaphysics of musical thinking, reification in Zionism, the transpoetics of Physics and Metaphysics, as well as correlating Aesthetic Theory to Jewish Law (halakhah).

Book Synopsis The Contemporary Parallel Bible by : John R. Kohlenberger (III)
Download or read book The Contemporary Parallel Bible written by John R. Kohlenberger (III) and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 1538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique volume displays the parallel texts of a pair of today's most popular evangelical Bible editions. Together, the New King James Version and New International Version represent the two major approaches to modern Bible translation. The New King James Version, an updating of the renowned King James Version, is technically known as a formal equivalent translation (often referred to as "word-for-word"). This means that scholars rendered the Hebrew, Aramaic and koine Greek of the biblical text into English that is as close as possible to its original meaning. The result is a translation that is particularly valuable for careful analysis of the text. The New International Version represents the "thought-for-thought" school of Bible translation (technically known as dynamic or functional equivalent). This method places the priority on the intended meaning of the original vocabulary, adapting it to English syntax and grammar. Such a translation tends to be easier to read and understand. The NKJV and NIV texts are arranged in two columns on each page of the Contemporary Parallel Bible, enabling readers to easily compare the word and phrasing choices made by the scholarly committees that brought these highly regarded translations into being.
