Book Synopsis Visionaries and Planners by : Stanley Buder
Download or read book Visionaries and Planners written by Stanley Buder and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1990 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Stanley Buder examines the Garden City movement from its origins in mid-nineteenth-century England to its subsequent development and elaboration in twentieth- century America. The Garden City movement emphasized green belts around cities but was not identified exclusively with suburban development. Much of the city planning which formed the basis for the Garden City movement was based upon designing the ideal community. But this sense of idealism was soon lost with the transfer of the movement to America, and indeed it was unable to sustain itself in the communities of its origin in England.

Download or read book The Garden City Utopia written by Robert Beevers and published by Springer. This book was released on 1988-02-02 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ebenezer Howard is recognised as a pioneer of town planning throughout the industrialised world; Britain's new towns, deriving from the garden cities he founded, are his monument. But Howard was more than a town planner. He was first and foremost a social reformer, and his garden city was intended to be merely the first step towards a new social and industrial order based on common ownership of land. This is the first comprehensive study of Howard's theories, which the author traces back to their origins in English puritan dissent and forward to Howard's attempt to build his new society in microcosm at Letchworth and Welwyn.

Book Synopsis Urban Utopias in the Twentieth Century by : Robert Fishman
Download or read book Urban Utopias in the Twentieth Century written by Robert Fishman and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1982-09-16 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The utopian visions of three of urban planning’s greatest visionaries. Ebenezer Howard, Frank Lloyd Wright and Le Corbusier, hated the cities of their time with an overwhelming passion. The metropolis was the counter-image of their ideal cities, the hell that inspired their heavens. In this book Robert Fishman examines the utopian visions of three of urban planning’s greatest visionaries. Howard created the concept of the “garden city” where shops and cottages formed the center of a geometric pattern with farmland surrounding; Wright conceived of “Broadacre City,” the ultimate suburb, where the automobile was king; and Le Corbusier imagined “Ville Radieuse,” the city of cruciform skyscrapers set down in open parkland.
Download or read book Peaceful Path written by Stephen Ward and published by Univ of Hertfordshire Press. This book was released on 2016-03-14 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The title of this book is taken from Ebenezer Howard's visionary tract To-morrow: A Peaceful Path to Real Reform. Published in 1898 as a manifesto for social reform via the creation of Garden Cities, it proposed a new way of providing cheap and healthy homes, workplaces and green spaces in balance in cohesive new communities, underpinned by radical ideas about collective land ownership. While Howard's vision had international impact, in this book planning historian Stephen Ward largely honors the special place that Hertfordshire occupies on the peaceful path, beginning with the development of Letchworth and Welwyn Garden Cities.
