Book Synopsis Welsh Boxing Annual 2019-2020 by : Dewi Powell
Download or read book Welsh Boxing Annual 2019-2020 written by Dewi Powell and published by . This book was released on 2020-10-05 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning at the frontline of the small hall scene and spanning to sold-out arenas in America, the inaugural Welsh Boxing Annual covers the local, national and international events that shaped the 2019-2020 season. As Welsh boxing enjoys a resurgence of activity, the people at the centre of Wales'' most successful sport offer emotive insights to the inspirations and struggles that underpin their stories. Together, Welsh boxers continue the tradition of their forebearers and collectively punch above their weight to make their own history. Controversy isn''t far away, it never is in boxing. Performance enhancing drugs, questionable officiating and claims of fixed fights all make an appearance. However, no problem looms larger than coronavirus disease (COVID-19), which forces the country into lockdown and threatens to cancel the boxing calendar. Andy Clarke, Sky Sports commentator: "Boxing is a sport of record. It''s essential that good records are kept and for that you need chroniclers you can trust. And Dewi Powell is exactly that person. He doesn''t just tell you who won and by what method but also what happened, in what circumstances and what the result meant in a wider context. Having an annual like this is great for fighters and fans alike. I really hope it''s the first of many." Tris Dixon, journalist and host of the Boxing Life Stories podcast: "The biggest mistake you can make about the Welsh Boxing Annual 2019-2020 is that it''s merely a record book. It''s more than that, it''s the definitive journey through the sport through 12 months covering all of boxing''s bases. Stories of ''fixed fights'', world title contests, Olympic qualification, the impact of coronavirus, performance enhancing drugs, upsets, controversies and good, hard contests, it''s all in there in graphic detail with access to the country''s biggest names and a ringside seat to their biggest fights. Every chapter is different but equally illuminating. Don''t be mistaken in thinking that this book is only for aficionados of Welsh boxing. That does it a disservice. It''s a well-written diary of a year covering the dramatic highs and lows the sport always offers." Michael Pearlman, BBC Sport Wales journalist: "Dewi Powell''s passion, knowledge and understanding of Welsh boxing is unsurpassed and permeates every page of this bible for Welsh fight fans. There is no such thing as a dull year in Welsh boxing but the Welsh Boxing Annual 2019-2020 captures a period that was unlike any other. From world title fights to Olympic amateur aspirations dashed, Dewi documents a tumultuous time in a love letter to a nation with boxing in its blood." Anson Wainwright, The Ring Magazine journalist: "An all-encompassing and nostalgic look back at the Welsh boxing scene. It evokes some wonderful memories from the grassroots levels and small hall venues all the way up to the world scene. Journeymen, local ticket sellers, fledgling prospects, domestic and world-rated contenders, all the way up to past and hopefully future Welsh world champions, you''ll find them all here. Wales isn''t and never has lacked for talented prize-fighters. A must read for all Welsh boxing fans." The Welsh Boxing Annual 2019-2020 includes interviews with: Joe Cordina, Dorian Darch, Kody Davies, Tony Dixon, Angelo Dragone, Rosie Eccles, Rhys Edwards, Craig Evans, Fred Evans, Richie Garner, Kieran Gething, Gavin Gwynne, Jay Harris, Maxi Hughes, Chris Jenkins, Morgan Jones, Wes Jones, Gary Lockett, Rashid Omar, Lee Selby, Maredudd Thomas, Nathan Thorley, Liam Williams, Sion Yaxley. It also covers the careers of; Jake Anthony, Joe Calzaghe, Lance Cooksey, Jamie JJ Evans, Lloyd Germain, Geraint Goodridge, Joshua John, Sean McGoldrick, Jay Munn, Lauren Price, Jacob Robinson, Andrew Selby, Jake Tinklin, Kristian Touze, Robbie Vernon, Gerome Warburton, Jamie Weetch, Osh Williams, Jordan Withers, Craig Woodruff.

Book Synopsis A Social History of Sheffield Boxing, Volume II by : Matthew Bell
Download or read book A Social History of Sheffield Boxing, Volume II written by Matthew Bell and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-01-04 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Social History of Sheffield Boxing combines urban ethnography and anthropology, sociological theory and place and life histories to explore the global phenomenon of boxing. Raising many issues pertinent to the social sciences, such as contestations around state regulation of violence, commerce and broadcasting, pedagogy and elite sport and how sport is delivered and narrated to the masses, the book studies the history of boxing in Sheffield and the sport’s impact on the cultural, political and economic development of the city since the 18th century. Interweaving urban anthropology with sports studies and historical research the text expertly examines a variety of published sources, ranging from academic papers to biographies and from newspaper reports to case studies and contemporary interviews. In Volume II, Bell and Armstrong examine the revival of Sheffield boxing after the decline of the 1950s and 1960s outlined in Volume I. Instigated by two men from outside the city—Brendan Ingle and Herol Graham—this renaissance became known as the ‘Ingle style,’ which between 1995 and 2014 produced four world champions: Naseem Hamed, Johnny Nelson, Junior Witter and Kell Brook. These successes inspired others and raised Sheffield’s profile as a boxing city, which in the 1990s and 2000s produced two more world champions in Paul ‘Silky’ Jones and Clinton Woods. In this second volume, Bell and Armstrong track the resurgence of boxing to the present day and consider how the game and its players have changed over time.
Book Synopsis Decolonizing Sport by : Janice Forsyth
Download or read book Decolonizing Sport written by Janice Forsyth and published by Fernwood Publishing. This book was released on 2023-11-02T00:00:00Z with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Decolonizing Sport tells the stories of sport colonizing Indigenous Peoples and of Indigenous Peoples using sport to decolonize. Spanning several lands — Turtle Island, the US, Australia, Aotearoa/New Zealand and Kenya — the authors demonstrate the two sharp edges of sport in the history of colonialism. Colonizers used sport, their own and Indigenous recreational activities they appropriated, as part of the process of dispossession of land and culture. Indigenous mascots and team names, hockey at residential schools, lacrosse and many other examples show the subjugating force of sport. Yet, Indigenous Peoples used sport, playing their own games and those of the colonizers, including hockey, horse racing and fishing, and subverting colonial sport rules as liberation from colonialism. This collection stands apart from recent publications in the area of sport with its focus on Indigenous Peoples, sport and decolonization, as well as in imagining a new way forward.

Download or read book The Long Field written by Pamela Petro and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2023-08-15 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For readers of H Is for Hawk, an intimate memoir of belonging and loss and a mesmerizing travelogue through the landscapes and language of Wales Hiraeth is a Welsh word that's famously hard to translate. Literally, it can mean "long field" but generally translates into English, inadequately, as "homesickness." At heart, hiraeth suggests something like a bone-deep longing for an irretrievable place, person, or time—an acute awareness of the presence of absence. In The Long Field, Pamela Petro braids essential hiraeth stories of Wales with tales from her own life—as an American who found an ancient home in Wales, as a gay woman, as the survivor of a terrible AMTRAK train crash, and as the daughter of a parent with dementia. Through the pull and tangle of these stories and her travels throughout Wales, hiraeth takes on radical new meanings. There is traditional hiraeth of place and home, but also queer hiraeth; and hiraeth triggered by technology, immigration, ecological crises, and our new divisive politics. On this journey, the notion begins to morph from a uniquely Welsh experience to a universal human condition, from deep longing to the creative responses to loss that Petro sees as the genius of Welsh culture. It becomes a tool to understand ourselves in our time. A finalist for the Wales Book of the Year Award and named to the Telegraph's and Financial Times's Top 10 lists for travel writing, The Long Field is an unforgettable exploration of “the hidden contours of the human heart.”

In contrast, this multinational team of authors has put together an introduction to communicating across cultures that uses examples and case studies from around the world. The book further covers essential new topics, including international conflict, social networking, migration, and the effects technology and mass media play in the globalization of communication. Each chapter brings to life the links between theory and practice and between the global and the local, introducing key theories and their practical applications. Along the way, you will be supported with first-rate learning resources, including: • theory corners with concise, boxed-out digests of key theoretical concepts • case illustrations putting the main points of each chapter into context • learning objectives, discussion questions, key terms and further reading framing each chapter and stimulating further discussion • a companion website containing resources for instructors, including multiple choice questions, presentation slides, exercises and activities, and teaching notes. This book will not merely guide you to success in your studies, but will teach you to become a more critical consumer of information and understand the influence of your own culture on how you view yourself and others.
