Book excerpt: Laser welding is a high-energy process used in a wide range of advanced materials to obtain micro- to macro-sized joints in both similar and dissimilar combinations. Moreover, this technique is widely used in several industries, such as automotive, aerospace, and medical industries, as well as in electrical devices. Although laser welding has been used for several decades, significant and exciting innovations often arise from both the process and/or advanced materials side.

Book excerpt: The most up-to-date coverage of welding metallurgy aspects and weldability issues associated with Ni-base alloys Welding Metallurgy and Weldability of Nickel-Base Alloys describes the fundamental metallurgical principles that control the microstructure and properties of welded Ni-base alloys. It serves as a practical how-to guide that enables engineers to select the proper alloys, filler metals, heat treatments, and welding conditions to ensure that failures are avoided during fabrication and service. Chapter coverage includes: Alloying additions, phase diagrams, and phase stability Solid-solution strengthened Ni-base alloys Precipitation strengthened Ni-base alloys Oxide dispersion strengthened alloys and nickel aluminides Repair welding of Ni-base alloys Dissimilar welding Weldability testing High-chromium alloys used in nuclear power applications With its excellent balance between the fundamentals and practical problem solving, the book serves as an ideal reference for scientists, engineers, and technicians, as well as a textbook for undergraduate and graduate courses in welding metallurgy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the fourth volume in the well-established series of compendiums devoted to the subject of weld hot cracking. It contains the papers presented at the 4th International Cracking Workshop held in Berlin in April 2014. In the context of this workshop, the term “cracking” refers to hot cracking in the classical and previous sense, but also to cold cracking, stress-corrosion cracking and elevated temp. solid-state cracking. A variety of different cracking subjects are discussed, including test standards, crack prediction, weldability determination, crack mitigation, stress states, numerical modelling, and cracking mechanisms. Likewise, many different alloys were investigated such as aluminum alloys, copper-aluminum dissimilar metal, austenitic stainless steel, nickel base alloys, duplex stainless steel, creep resistant steel, and high strength steel.

Book excerpt: Reported progress on the electron-beam welding of commercially pure W indicates that sound crack-free welds can be made if the weld is not restrained during welding. Although the data are not all consistent, welds which are smooth and have minimum fusion and heat-affected zone width should be the strongest and most ductile. Tensile strengths are equivalent to the base metal near the recrystallization temperature but are appreciably lower at room temperature. The ductile-to-brittle transition temperatures for electron-beam-welded tungsten are above that of the base metal. The impact resistance of electron-beam-welded tungsten is very low. Electron-beam welding of tungsten parts should be thoroughly evaluated on production prototypes before specifying its use. (Author).

Book excerpt: Welding in Energy-Related Projects contains the proceedings of the Welding Institute of Canada’s Second International Conference held in Toronto, 20-21 September 1983, on the theme ""Welding in Energy-Related Projects."" The contributions to the conference offer a unique overview of many areas of technology from research and development studies to construction and operation, and as such provide a comprehensive reference source. This volume contains 44 papers organized into eight sections. Section I contains studies on materials and weldability of steels for energy structures. Section II covers welding techniques such as flux-cored arc welding, root pass welding, and automatic welding. Section III on welding control systems includes studies on such as integrated robotic welding and microprocessor technology in automatic integrated welding systems. Sections IV and V presents studies on welding of high-alloy systems and welding procedure optimization, respectively. Section VI covers quality assurance and inspection of piping systems. Section VII takes up the properties of welds. Section VIII presents stress and strain analyses of welds.
