Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urban Planning for Disaster Recovery focuses on disaster recovery from the perspective of urban planning, an underutilized tactic that can significantly reduce disaster risks. The book examines disaster risk reduction (DRR), in particular, the recovery stage of what is widely known as the disaster cycle. The theoretical underpinning of the book derives from a number of sources in urban planning and disaster management literature, and is illustrated by a series of case studies. It consists of five sections, each of which opens with a conceptual framework that is followed by a series of supporting and illustrative cases as practical examples. These examples both complement and critique the theoretical base provided, demonstrating the need to apply the concepts in location-specific ways. Examines disaster recovery from an urban planning perspective Illustrates key concepts with real-world case studies Explores the contributions of experts, urban planners, NGOs, and community members

Book excerpt: Winner of the 1985 Seal Books First Novel Award and of the Books in Canada First Novel Award To Mrs. Hopper, Yoshi Takahashi may be just another name from her daughters’ past, but for Jean and her sister, Colette, he stands for much more. Years ago, Mr. Takahashi moved into their Toronto neighbourhood and sent the adolescent lives of Jean and Colette into a tailspin. They weren’t content merely to befriend the Japanese pianist - in their infatuation they sought to mirror his life as closely as possible. The enchantment lingers into adult life in ways both sisters are reluctant to recognize. This weekend they have been invited to an extravagant family celebration in Victoria, B.C. As the party gains momentum, so does the tension between the sisters. As before, the larger-than-life Mr. Takahashi casts his spell. Originally published in 1985, A Certain Mr. Takahashi won the coveted Seal First Novel Award and the Books in Canada/W.H. Smith First Novel Award.

Book excerpt: The core of the book revolves around the shifting nature of Ontario’s political landscape. In many ways this is a story of successive governments, ambitious politicians, diligent bureaucrats, and endless library reports straddling the decades. Their aim appears to have been making even better a system that, despite weaknesses, was clearly the best in Canada. Three distinctive trends emerged in Ontario librarianship after the 1930s: first, a growing sense of professionalism in librarianship; second, an enhanced sense of belonging to a pan-Canadian library movement that in 1946 would result in the formation of the Canadian Library Association; and third, a heightened awareness of the competing demands of high culture and popular culture. Public libraries became an important vehicle for promoting community, albeit with competing visions of “space and place,” as Canada generally and Ontario specifically experienced post-World War II immigration and the baby boom. As libraries approached the 21st century, the concerns of digital formats and the all-encompassing Internet intertwined to alter the book-centric "bricks and mortar" world of libraries. Nonetheless, public libraries were well placed to survive this new threat, just as they had with the challenges of radio, television, and telecommunication challenges in the 20th century.

Book excerpt: The oldest continuously operating Catholic parish in Ontario, Our Lady of Assumption, was formally established in 1767 by French Jesuit missionaries, when modern-day Windsor was rural and unsettled. Assumption Church, a beautiful Gothic-Revival structure opened in 1845, is considered one of Windsor's most significant historic sites, where the city grew and developed around its walls. The church's doors were closed to the public in 2014, but the parish continues on, and in 2017 celebrated its 250th anniversary. A pictorial history that sweeps through Assumption's rich past and present, 250 Years of Assumption Parish chronicles moments from 18th-century history, from the founding of Assumption College--precursor to the University of Windsor--to the current state and interior of Assumption Church, including the last mass before the doors were closed. With never-before-seen photographs and an introduction by decorated local historian Patrick Brode, 250 Years of Assumption Parish archives and collects the story of an Ontario institution that today still serves over 700 families, and whose reach travels far beyond its borders.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Doctor and Student It is presumed that no particular apology is necessary to be made for introducing to the notice of the profession a new edition of the Doctor and Student; a book which has been considered of the first authority, not only by the best and most admired of our legal writers, but by the courts of Westminsterhall. The species of composition in which it is written must likewise add to its value, and intitle it to approbation. Dialogue is universally allowed to be an agreeable method of writing, which never fails to instruct more than any other, by its peculiar tendency to make a more favorable and lasting impression upon the mind. Perhaps the language is not so pure as might be expected from a modern author, nor so correct as altogether to adapt itself to the taste of the curious. But this is a defect (if a defect it can be called) which should be overlooked for the intrinsic merits of the book itself. Book excerpt: This fascinating 100-year photographic collection of Windsor, Ontario from 1860 to 1960, with images culled from the archives of Walkerville Publishing Inc., chronicles the evolution of a sleepy village at the western edge of the British Empire, as it becomes a Canadian industry giant.Though christened Windsor because of its "back-home" familiarity, Canada's southernmost city was in large part shaped by its close proximity to Detroit, Michigan. The more than 130 photos in "Windsor Then" include images that emerge like a nearly forgotten dream: stubby ferry steamers puffing across the Detroit River, graceful ships cruising up and down the Great Lakes, charming horse-drawn carriages and trolleys giving way to the steel and smoke horse-less variety, rowdy rum runners making their fortunes during the wild days of Prohibition, the harsh reality of the Great Depression sandwiched between two "great" wars, and the rise of the well-to-do and comfortable middle class as Windsor's auto and tool and die industry matures.Ultimately, what this book reveals is a portrait of a community's boundless optimism, its innovators as well as simple, hard-working business folk, during an era of remarkable achievement, vigour and great expectations, when anything was possible. And indeed, isn't Windsor's story really the story of Canada?

Book excerpt: Windsor, Ontario: the City of Roses, the Automotive Capital of Canada, South Detroit. Whatever name you know it by, this is a city that has flourished and transformed over the years, growing and changing with its industrial nature. In Windsor: Then & Now, architectural specialist Andrew Foot partners with landscape photographer Ian Virtue to explore the life of this mid-sized, blue-collar town through photographs. By contrasting historic images, stretching from the turn of the century to the modernist 1970s, with photographs of today's Windsor, we see a cityscape in vivid relief. From the Gothic towers of St. Mary's Academy, levelled for a suburban neighbourhood, to the vibrant downtown Norwich Block replaced by the skyscraping Chrysler tower, Windsor: Then & Now shows us a city balancing a rich heritage with a taste for the new--a constant flux, shifting and renewing itself with the times.

Book excerpt: 1912 was a red-letter year for Winnipeg, Manitoba. Dubbed the "Chicago of the North," Winnipeg became for a time the metropolis of the west until the rumblings of the First World War ended the flow of investments, and immigration, construction, and economic activity ground to a halt. Beautifully illustrated with period photographs, Winnipeg 1912 is a lively and entertaining account of a vibrant and prosperous city unaware of its impending demise.
