Book excerpt: Decades of research have demonstrated that the parent-child dyad and the environment of the familyâ€"which includes all primary caregiversâ€"are at the foundation of children's well- being and healthy development. From birth, children are learning and rely on parents and the other caregivers in their lives to protect and care for them. The impact of parents may never be greater than during the earliest years of life, when a child's brain is rapidly developing and when nearly all of her or his experiences are created and shaped by parents and the family environment. Parents help children build and refine their knowledge and skills, charting a trajectory for their health and well-being during childhood and beyond. The experience of parenting also impacts parents themselves. For instance, parenting can enrich and give focus to parents' lives; generate stress or calm; and create any number of emotions, including feelings of happiness, sadness, fulfillment, and anger. Parenting of young children today takes place in the context of significant ongoing developments. These include: a rapidly growing body of science on early childhood, increases in funding for programs and services for families, changing demographics of the U.S. population, and greater diversity of family structure. Additionally, parenting is increasingly being shaped by technology and increased access to information about parenting. Parenting Matters identifies parenting knowledge, attitudes, and practices associated with positive developmental outcomes in children ages 0-8; universal/preventive and targeted strategies used in a variety of settings that have been effective with parents of young children and that support the identified knowledge, attitudes, and practices; and barriers to and facilitators for parents' use of practices that lead to healthy child outcomes as well as their participation in effective programs and services. This report makes recommendations directed at an array of stakeholders, for promoting the wide-scale adoption of effective programs and services for parents and on areas that warrant further research to inform policy and practice. It is meant to serve as a roadmap for the future of parenting policy, research, and practice in the United States.

Daniel is his oldest brother, and Matthew is his second-oldest brother. He has a dad that he says is strict with him and doesn't love him the same way he loves his other two brothers, but really, his dad just knows his little boy is growing up way too fast. They have friends that are part of their gang too that they call family. Which are John, David, Mark, Clark, Bradley, George, and Alex, who were his brothers he'd known all their life and grew up with. In the story, it tells you about who they are and what's going on with them now and what happened to them in the past throughout the book. In the book, Mike also explains how his brother Dan is lonely and needs to get a girlfriend. Till out of the blue a girl named Jessie Smith catches his heart. So Mike and his best friend, Alex, think of a plan to get them together. Although the plan didn't exactly work, Dan and Jessie still went on a date. But after you come across the end of the book, you might have a different point of view about your family.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Family support is an increasingly important strategic approach to welfare services for children and families. This invaluable resource for all professionals engaged in the development and delivery of these services is underpinned by reflective practice values and structured around four themes: * conceptual frameworks and vocabulary (defining) * policy and organisational structures and processing (planning) * tools for creative practice (doing) * approaches to evaluation (measuring). Contributors from around the world provide international perspectives on core issues in family support. These include the importance of community, the role of statutory and voluntary agencies, youth advocacy, culturally appropriate family support, child protection, disability services and effective means of evaluation. Providing a combination of clear theoretical frameworks and practical guidance, with clear 'how to' messages and a strong emphasis on evaluation, this book will be of interest to social workers, care staff, teachers, community development and police officers, students, policy-makers, evaluators and all those working in all areas of family support.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The purpose of this project was to design a new program, identify a funding source, and write a grant proposal to fund a service center for immigrant families involved with the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS). Services include support groups, educational classes, crisis intervention therapy, parenting classes, and referral services. A literature review revealed challenges and obstacles faced by immigrant families in the U.S. It also reviewed the risk factors for child maltreatment, reasons immigrant children become involved with the child welfare system, challenges that immigrant families face within the child welfare system, and recommended interventions that can help alleviate some of the difficulties experienced by immigrant families. A search for a potential funding source identified the American Legion Child Welfare Foundation. A grant was written to fund a comprehensive program at DCFS Belvedere office. Actual submission or funding for this program was not required for the completion of this project.

Book excerpt: This book heralds a new generation of Christians who are more than bold…they are fearless! No Fear draws you inside the stories of young, ordinary believers who, despite incredible opposition, courageously stand up for God’s truth. Tony Perkins pairs each story with a biblical example and gives practical ideas for building a “no fear” perspective every day. Today, followers of Jesus Christ face more opposition to their beliefs than any generation in American history. Yet even in such a hostile cultural and political environment, it is an exciting time to stand firm in the faith. You have been chosen to live in this important hour, and reading these stories will inspire you to the same kind of courage. So what are you waiting for? “Tony Perkins has discovered a new generation of young people who love following God more than the crowd...You will discover there is still hope for America and the world after reading their stories in No Fear!” —Todd Starnes, Fox News Channel “No Fear...is a must-read book that will inspire a courageous heart in tomorrow’s movers and shakers. —Dana Loesch, nationally syndicated radio host, author, host BlazeTV “As the world continues to spiral into an anti-Christian age, it’s important to empower our young people with the strength and conviction to hold fast to the teachings of Christ, and No Fear does just that.” —Dr. Jack Graham, Senior Pastor, Prestonwood Baptist Church Includes discussion questions after each chapter.
