Book excerpt: A Hollywood film crew upends life in an idyllic California village in this prequel to the Carson Springs trilogy In the late 1950s, filmmakers descended on Carson Springs to shoot the movie that made this sleepy Spanish mission town famous. A plaque commemorates the filming of Stranger in Paradise, but nowhere does it mention Cora Delarosa, whose life changed forever when Hollywood arrived. Barely thirty, but married for over a decade, she does not realize that her marriage is falling apart until she meets the handsome and charming film director Hank Montgomery. In this novella, Eileen Goudge sets the stage for her Carson Springs trilogy, showing that in this small town, passion, heartache, and long-buried secrets have always been a way of life. This ebook features excerpts from two of the Carson Springs novels, favorite recipes from Eileen Goudge’s own kitchen, and an illustrated biography of Goudge including rare photos from her personal collection.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three addictive novels of romance and suspense in a small California town from the New York Times–bestselling author of The Diary and Garden of Lies. In Stranger in Paradise, the first book of Eileen Goudge’s bestselling Carson Springs series, an unlikely wedding upends the tranquil California town. It isn’t easy to watch your daughter marry a man who’s twice her age, but Samantha Kiley holds her tongue. Wes seems like a good man, and it doesn’t hurt that he’s also a billionaire. She has no idea that she will soon be caught up in a May–December affair of her own that will set tongues wagging and complicate her idyllic small-town life. In A Taste of Honey, a woman revisits a decision that changed her life three decades ago. Gerry Fitzgerald kneels before the altar, moments away from the most important decision of her life. She is about to take her vows in the sisterhood of God, and yet she is not at peace. Doubt fills her heart and she is torn with guilt. She found illicit passion in the arms of Father Jim, and now she is pregnant with the baby they conceived. Is she ready to give up on having a family? And in Wish Come True, a young woman fights for freedom after being arrested for the murder of her sister. The world loves Monica Vincent, and her sister Anna has always tried to love her, too. Anna’s life is devoted to the Hollywood star; as her sister’s personal assistant, she spends her days answering Monica’s fan mail and catering to her every whim. But Monica is cruel, and when a car accident leaves her in a wheelchair, her treatment of Anna gets even worse. When Monica is found floating facedown in the swimming pool at her mansion, the police see the star’s sister as the likely culprit. To keep herself from jail, Anna digs for the truth, desperate to learn who killed the sister she hated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Good news! Fannie’s back in town—and the town is among the leading characters in her new novel. Along with Neighbor Dorothy, the lady with the smile in her voice, whose daily radio broadcasts keep us delightfully informed on all the local news, we also meet Bobby, her ten-year-old son, destined to live a thousand lives, most of them in his imagination; Norma and Macky Warren and their ninety-eight-year-old Aunt Elner; the oddly sexy and charismatic Hamm Sparks, who starts off in life as a tractor salesman and ends up selling himself to the whole state and almost the entire country; and the two women who love him as differently as night and day. Then there is Tot Whooten, the beautician whose luck is as bad as her hairdressing skills; Beatrice Woods, the Little Blind Songbird; Cecil Figgs, the Funeral King; and the fabulous Minnie Oatman, lead vocalist of the Oatman Family Gospel Singers. The time is 1946 until the present. The town is Elmwood Springs, Missouri, right in the middle of the country, in the midst of the mostly joyous transition from war to peace, aiming toward a dizzyingly bright future. Once again, Fannie Flagg gives us a story of richly human characters, the saving graces of the once-maligned middle classes and small-town life, and the daily contest between laughter and tears. Fannie truly writes from the heartland, and her storytelling is, to quote Time, "utterly irresistible."

Book excerpt: The authoritative biography of the marine biologist and nature writer whose book Silent Spring inspired the global environmentalist movement. In a career that spanned from civil service to unlikely literary celebrity, Rachel Carson became one of the world’s seminal leaders in conservation. The 1962 publication of her book Silent Spring was a watershed event that led to the banning of DDT and launched the modern environmental movement. Growing up in poverty on a tiny Allegheny River farm, Carson attended the Pennsylvania College for Women on a scholarship. There, she studied science and writing before taking a job with the newly emerging Fish and Wildlife Service. In this definitive biography, Linda Lear traces the evolution of Carson’s private, professional, and public lives, from the origins of her dedication to natural science to her invaluable service as a brilliant, if reluctant, reformer. Drawing on unprecedented access to sources and interviews, Lear masterfully explores the roots of Carson’s powerful connection to the natural world, crafting a “fine portrait of the environmentalist as a human being” (Smithsonian). “Impressively researched and eminently readable . . . Compelling, not just for Carson devotees but for anyone concerned about the environment.” —People “[A] combination of meticulous scholarship and thoughtful, often poignant, writing.” —Science “A sweeping, analytic, first-class biography of Rachel Carson.” —Kirkus Reviews

The cut is slight, but it makes her realize that her marriage to Robert Van Doren is causing her nothing but pain. Although successful, wealthy, and boyishly handsome, her husband is a heartless man, who cheats on his wife and makes a living at the expense of the environment. Although it takes time to build up the courage, Noelle knows that leaving him is the right thing. But Robert Van Doren is not one to accept defeat. He punishes Nora by using his considerable power to get custody of their child. Leaving Robert is not the end of Noelle’s struggle; it is merely the first step on a treacherous journey towards freedom. Book excerpt: The design, construction, operation, and retrofit of buildings is evolving in response to ever-increasing knowledge about the impact of indoor environments on people and the impact of buildings on the environment. Research has shown that the quality of indoor environments can affect the health, safety, and productivity of the people who occupy them. Buildings are also resource intensive, accounting for 40 percent of primary energy use in the United States, 12 percent of water consumption, and 60 percent of all non-industrial waste. The processes for producing electricity at power plants and delivering it for use in buildings account for 40 percent of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions. The U.S. federal government manages approximately 429,000 buildings of many types with a total square footage of 3.34 billion worldwide, of which about 80 percent is owned space. More than 30 individual departments and agencies are responsible for managing these buildings. The characteristics of each agency's portfolio of facilities are determined by its mission and its programs. In 2010, GSA's Office of Federal High-Performance Green Buildings asked the National Academies to appoint an ad hoc committee of experts to conduct a public workshop and prepare a report that identified strategies and approaches for achieving a range of objectives associated with high-performance green federal buildings. Achieving High-Performance Federal Facilities identifies examples of important initiatives taking place and available resources. The report explores how these examples could be used to help make sustainability the preferred choice at all levels of decision making. Achieving High-Performance Federal Facilities can serve as a valuable guide federal agencies with differing missions, types of facilities, and operating procedures.

Thirty years later, Kerrie Ann, a high school dropout who has bounced from family to family, flies to Santa Cruz to meet the sister she never knew she had. With no job skills and no significant other, Kerrie Ann needs the help of her long-lost sister to regain custody of her six-year-old daughter, Bella. Lindsay, who grew up in a loving adoptive family, has spent decades trying to track down her sister. When Kerrie Ann suddenly appears in her bookstore—a seemingly lost, but tough-looking young woman with pink streaks in her hair—she’s stunned. With help from an eighty-year-old exotic dancer, a bad-boy baker, and a sexy bestselling novelist, Lindsay is determined to help Kerrie Ann turn her life around. But Lindsay—and the sleepy seaside town of Blue Moon Bay—will never be the same. From the New York Times–bestselling author of Garden of Lies and other blockbusters, this is both “a touching story with wide appeal [and] a sharp example of dysfunctional family fiction” (Publishers Weekly).

Book excerpt: In 1933, widowed Mattie Brinson Bragg arrived in Colorado Springs looking for opportunities for her seven children who were crowded midst all the family's worldly belongings in the back of their uncle's dust-covered, open-air truck. No one could ever have imagined that one of those youngsters from the backcountry of Depression-era Oklahoma would grow up to work for a Russian Count, pressure the city manager to give her a business license, persuade a wealthy white socialite to lend her $3000 for a business venture, and stand up to the admonitions of a tough police chief who warned her to stop "mixing colors," but that's exactly what happened. As a result, Fannie Mae Duncan peacefully integrated the city of Colorado Springs to the musical accompaniment of the top black artists of the day at her Cotton Club. Her formula for success?
