Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inequalities play an important role in almost all branches of mathematics as well as in other areas of science and engineering. This book surveys the present state of the theory of weighted integral inequalities of Hardy type, including modifications concerning Hardy–Steklov operators, and some basic results about Hardy-type inequalities and their limit (Carleman–Knopp type) inequalities. It also describes some rather new areas such as higher order and fractional order Hardy-type inequalities and integral inequalities on the cone of monotone functions, together with some applications and open problems. In this second edition, all chapters in the first edition have been updated with new information. Moreover, a new chapter contains new and complementary information concerning: (a) a convexity approach to prove and explain Hardy-type inequalities; (b) sharp constants; (c) scales of inequalities to characterize Hardy-type inequalities; (d) Hardy-type inequalities in other function spaces; and (e) a number of new open questions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book provides an extensive treatment of Hardy inequalities and closely related topics from the point of view of Folland and Stein's homogeneous (Lie) groups. The place where Hardy inequalities and homogeneous groups meet is a beautiful area of mathematics with links to many other subjects. While describing the general theory of Hardy, Rellich, Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg, Sobolev, and other inequalities in the setting of general homogeneous groups, the authors pay particular attention to the special class of stratified groups. In this environment, the theory of Hardy inequalities becomes intricately intertwined with the properties of sub-Laplacians and subelliptic partial differential equations. These topics constitute the core of this book and they are complemented by additional, closely related topics such as uncertainty principles, function spaces on homogeneous groups, the potential theory for stratified groups, and the potential theory for general Hörmander's sums of squares and their fundamental solutions. This monograph is the winner of the 2018 Ferran Sunyer i Balaguer Prize, a prestigious award for books of expository nature presenting the latest developments in an active area of research in mathematics. As can be attested as the winner of such an award, it is a vital contribution to literature of analysis not only because it presents a detailed account of the recent developments in the field, but also because the book is accessible to anyone with a basic level of understanding of analysis. Undergraduate and graduate students as well as researchers from any field of mathematical and physical sciences related to analysis involving functional inequalities or analysis of homogeneous groups will find the text beneficial to deepen their understanding.

Book excerpt: Some problems in mathematical analysis (e.g., in theory of function spaces, in approximation theory or in interpolation theory) lead to the investigation of weighted inequalities on certain classes of quasiconcave functions on the interval I=(a,b) ∊ R. In this book we analyse the class Qρ(I) of ρ-quasiconcave functions in a complete generality in order to establish results needed for a comprehensive study of weighted inequalities on the class Qρ(I). We illustrate our results on weighted inequalities of Hardy type, on weighted inequalities of Hardy type involving supremum, and on reverse forms of these inequalities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the first time in book form, Analytical Methods for Markov Semigroups provides a comprehensive analysis on Markov semigroups both in spaces of bounded and continuous functions as well as in Lp spaces relevant to the invariant measure of the semigroup. Exploring specific techniques and results, the book collects and updates the literature associated with Markov semigroups. Divided into four parts, the book begins with the general properties of the semigroup in spaces of continuous functions: the existence of solutions to the elliptic and to the parabolic equation, uniqueness properties and counterexamples to uniqueness, and the definition and properties of the weak generator. It also examines properties of the Markov process and the connection with the uniqueness of the solutions. In the second part, the authors consider the replacement of RN with an open and unbounded domain of RN. They also discuss homogeneous Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions associated with the operator A. The final chapters analyze degenerate elliptic operators A and offer solutions to the problem. Using analytical methods, this book presents past and present results of Markov semigroups, making it suitable for applications in science, engineering, and economics.

Book excerpt: A systematic account of the subject, this book deals with properties and applications of the Sobolev spaces with weights, the weight function being dependent on the distance of a point of the definition domain from the boundary of the domain or from its parts. After an introduction of definitions, examples and auxilliary results, it describes the study of properties of Sobolev spaces with power-type weights, and analogous problems for weights of a more general type. The concluding chapter addresses applications of weighted spaces to the solution of the Dirichlet problem for an elliptic linear differential operator.

The study of dynamic inequalities on time scales has been covered extensively in the literature in recent years and has now become a major sub-field in pure and applied mathematics. In particular, this book will cover recent results on integral inequalities, including Young's inequality, Jensen's inequality, Holder's inequality, Minkowski's inequality, Steffensen's inequality, Hermite-Hadamard inequality and Čebyšv's inequality. Opial type inequalities on time scales and their extensions with weighted functions, Lyapunov type inequalities, Halanay type inequalities for dynamic equations on time scales, and Wirtinger type inequalities on time scales and their extensions will also be discussed here in detail.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an accessible introduction to the theory of variable Lebesgue spaces. These spaces generalize the classical Lebesgue spaces by replacing the constant exponent p with a variable exponent p(x). They were introduced in the early 1930s but have become the focus of renewed interest since the early 1990s because of their connection with the calculus of variations and partial differential equations with nonstandard growth conditions, and for their applications to problems in physics and image processing. The book begins with the development of the basic function space properties. It avoids a more abstract, functional analysis approach, instead emphasizing an hands-on approach that makes clear the similarities and differences between the variable and classical Lebesgue spaces. The subsequent chapters are devoted to harmonic analysis on variable Lebesgue spaces. The theory of the Hardy-Littlewood maximal operator is completely developed, and the connections between variable Lebesgue spaces and the weighted norm inequalities are introduced. The other important operators in harmonic analysis - singular integrals, Riesz potentials, and approximate identities - are treated using a powerful generalization of the Rubio de Francia theory of extrapolation from the theory of weighted norm inequalities. The final chapter applies the results from previous chapters to prove basic results about variable Sobolev spaces.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is devoted to dynamic inequalities of Hardy type and extensions and generalizations via convexity on a time scale T. In particular, the book contains the time scale versions of classical Hardy type inequalities, Hardy and Littlewood type inequalities, Hardy-Knopp type inequalities via convexity, Copson type inequalities, Copson-Beesack type inequalities, Liendeler type inequalities, Levinson type inequalities and Pachpatte type inequalities, Bennett type inequalities, Chan type inequalities, and Hardy type inequalities with two different weight functions. These dynamic inequalities contain the classical continuous and discrete inequalities as special cases when T = R and T = N and can be extended to different types of inequalities on different time scales such as T = hN, h > 0, T = qN for q > 1, etc.In this book the authors followed the history and development of these inequalities. Each section in self-contained and one can see the relationship between the time scale versions of the inequalities and the classical ones. To the best of the authors’ knowledge this is the first book devoted to Hardy-typeinequalities and their extensions on time scales.
