Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book seeks to move twentieth-century German literary history away from its stubbornly persistent reliance on the political turning-points of 1933 and 1945. In the first part of the book, the authors analyze a synchronic corpus of literary journals, identifying a restorative aesthetic mood in the years 1930-1960 which persists across political date boundaries. In the second part, the careers of five writers are considered diachronically against this prevailing restorative climate: Gottfried Benn, Johannes R. Becher, Bertolt Brecht, Günter Eich, and Peter Huchel. Combining these two approaches, the authors show that a fresh perspective that challenges established literary-historical periodisations can shed light on the common cultural and aesthetic ground shared by writers, editors and critics across the ideological divides of the era.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are two articles in issue 6, IV-2023 of "Journal of Ethnic Microhistory". The investigative essay "Warning Against Emigration to the Caucasus" by Walther Friesen is based on the article published on 10 May 1860 in Dortmunder Kreisblatt (The Newspaper of Dortmund Dictrict). It outlines the situation of Swabian pietists from Württemberg who came to the South Caucasus at the invitation of Emperor of Russia Alexander I. The author portrays the history of German expatriates on that territory from 1818 to 1941. The critical review "About Those who Went Through All the Hardships with their People (Notes about Soviet German literature)" by Hugo Wormsbecher is devoted to the development of Russia-German literature before 1989. The contribution is written in German and preceded by an English abstract.

As one of the best-known initiatives of the EU, it has already enabled almost three million students to spend a part of their studies abroad. But ERASMUS is more than just a simple academic exchange programme: designed to contribute to the creation of a «People’s Europe», it has become a successful political instrument for shaping generations of European students. This interdisciplinary volume attempts to explain the fascination behind ERASMUS. The authors examine the role of student mobility within the European integration process and judge its impact on how young citizens identify with Europe. Is there a «Generation ERASMUS», and what characteristics does it have? Can ERASMUS serve as a symbol for «new» Europeans?

Book excerpt: This study researches the historical development of the self-understanding of the Old Catholic Churches of the Union of Utrecht and the Iglesia Filipina Independiente. Throughout the 20th century, both churches have been in a developing relationship with each other, resulting in full communion in 1965. In the same time period, both churches developed an ecclesiological self-understanding in which an ecclesiology of the national church gradually gave way to an ecclesiology of the local church. By outlining this development for each of these two churches and comparing the developments, the study gives insight both into the individual development of the two churches involved and shows how these developments relate to each other. In this way, the study presents a new historical portrait of these churches and their self-understanding.

This volume, edited jointly by the American strategic expert Robert Kennedy and the German peace researcher Hans Giinter Brauch, takes up conceptual ideas developed by Horst Afheldt and Carl Friedrich von Weizsacker, as well as others on both sides of the Atlantic, since the 1960s. Our aim has been to contribute to the development of concepts that would reduce the danger of a third world war by the creation of more stable structures in the context of a defensively oriented conventional defense posture. In this volume a variety of alternative approaches to European conventional defense, driven for the most part by similar strategic considerations, are presented by German and American experts to a larger international audience.

There is now a wealth of international experience of how well sustainable planning works in practice and how it can be improved. With a wide range of contributions from America, Australia, Europe as well as the UK, Sustainable transport sums up many of the lessons learnt and how they can be applied in improved planning. Non-motorised transport planning depends on combining improvements to infrastructure with education. There are chapters examining both national strategies and local initiatives in cities around the world, including such topics as changes to existing road infrastructure and the integration of cycling and walking with public transport. Since education is a critical element in sustainable transport planning, contributors also consider such topics as developing healthier travel habits and ways of promoting cycling and walking as alternatives to the car. With its blend of practical experience and suggestions for improvement, Sustainable transport is essential reading for urban planners, environmental groups and those researching transport issues. - Comprehensive handbook covering sustainable transport initiatives world wide - Focuses on walking and cycling as alternatives to motorised transport systems - Presents practical advice on how to encourage sustainable transport schemes

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since Unification and the end of the Cold War, Berlin has witnessed a series of uncommonly intense social, political, and cultural transformations. While positioning itself as a creative center populated by young and cosmopolitan global citizens, the “New Berlin” is at the same time a rich site of historical memory, defined inescapably by its past even as it articulates German and European hopes for the future. Cultural Topographies of the New Berlin presents a fascinating cross-section of life in Germany’s largest city, revealing the complex ways in which globalization, ethnicity, economics, memory, and national identity inflect how its urban spaces are inhabited and depicted.

Book excerpt: China as a place of isolation hiding from the world behind a great wall – an image which has become exposed as a pejorative cliché. However, The opposite is the case: The country has been immersed in transnational and transcultural exchange for centuries. China was, is and will be part of a global context. This volume sheds new light on the dimensions of China’s continuous engagement with the world: as an inspiration for European garden designers, as a participant in global dialogue on culture, law and innovative technology, as a destination for academics, business leaders and refugees, but also – and increasingly so – as a powerful political actor in Asia and throughout the world.
