Book excerpt: Wearer of the Confederate Gray: Memoirs of a North Carolina State Trooper by Mike Gahagan In this stirring memoir, we are regaled by a string of anecdotal tales about the legendary State Trooper Mike “Mad Dog” Gahagan. At times laugh-out-loud hilarious and at others heart-rending, the exploits and adventures of Trooper Gahagan offer keen insight into the world of law enforcement in the straight-shooting, no-holds-barred voice that only Gahagan has. But more than a career rundown, Wearer of the Confederate Gray tells the story of a man, his family, and the path they walk to uphold the law for the safety and betterment of society. Ever since he was eight years old, Mike Gahagan knew he wanted to be part of the North Carolina Highway Patrol. He served briefly in the Andrews Police Department before living out his dream. He has been a member of many law enforcement organizations. Now retired from Highway Patrol, he is still a sworn law enforcement officer with the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Department and the A-B Tech Police Department.

Book excerpt: When Generals in Gray was published in 1959, scholars and critics immediately hailed it as one of the few indispensable books on the American Civil War. Historian Stanley Horn, for example, wrote, "It is difficult for a reviewer to restrain his enthusiasm in recommending a monumental book of this high quality and value." Here at last is the paperback edition of Ezra J. Warner's magnum opus with its concise, detailed biographical sketches and -- in an amazing feat of research -- photographs of all 425 Confederate generals. The only exhaustive guide to the South's command, Generals in Gray belongs on the shelf of anyone interested in the Civil War.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Gray Book, compiled by the Sons of Confederate Veterans in 1920, registers a number of objections with the South's portrayal during the American Civil War and afterwards, in the Reconstruction period. This book offers a frank and upfront alternate viewpoint on both the causes and ramifications of the American Civil War, beginning with a clarification of the Emancipation Proclamation. Aspects of what the authors view as Unionist propaganda and falsehoods are also tackled; for instance, many veterans speak of a sense of shame at having to face false claims of prisoner mistreatment and other inhumane behaviors. In the view of the authors, the South fought for independence and self-determination, rather than for the right to maintain the system of slavery. In support of this claim, the author notes how slavery was introduced and ingrained by European colonists, and how the incremental banning of slavery in the northerly states drove and intensified the practice in the southern states.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume of biographical essays, all vividly written, extensively researched, Charles L. Dufour recounts the lives of nine Confederate officers, who served their cause with dedication, skill and bravery. “Porter Alexander is not a household name today, but he should be remembered as one of Robert E. Lee’s most valuable officers. Bold and imaginative, Alexander was an artillerist whose service was requested by every Confederate army commander. He and eight other “men in gray” come to life in vivid sketches by Charles L. Dufour. Singled out are Dick Taylor, the handsome son of former president Zachary Taylor who led the Louisiana Brigade; Turner Ashby, an expert horseman whose death in battle typified the doomed gallantry of the Rebels; Pat Cleburne of the Army of Tennessee, who was called “the Stonewall of the West”; “Savez” Read, a navy man who terrorized the Atlantic seaboard in a one-gun sailing vessel; Willie Pegram, a shy Virginian who was a bold cannoneer; Lucius B. Northrop, whose abrasive personality complicated his task of feeding the army; William Mahone, whose ferocious fighting spirit belied his bantam size; and Henry Hotze, who served brilliantly as a Confederate agent and propagandist.”-Print ed.

In support of this claim, the author notes how slavery was introduced and ingrained by European colonists, and how the incremental banning of slavery in the northerly states drove and intensified the practice in the southern states; such circumstances were not apparently favored by most residents of the South. The final section offers a comparison between the South after reconstruction, and Germany following the Treaty of Versailles. Published soon after the Versailles treaty was ratified, the author notes how popular commentators immediately began to make direct comparisons between the two: the New York Times in particular is noted for vociferous reports which also mentioned slavery. The author concludes that the cause of Germany and of the South have barely a thing in common, save for the two being on the losing side of war. This new edition reproduces the original text afresh, and is published complete with the notes and lists of contributing officers.

Book excerpt: That the Confederacy in its waning days frantically turned to the idea of arming slaves has long been known by all close students of the Civil War. Yet the more explosive, if unexamined, issue before the southern people and leaders in this last great crisis was whether or not the South itself should initiate a program of emancipation as part of a plan to recruit black soldiers. Jefferson Davis and other leaders, including Robert E. Lee, attempted to force the South to face the desperate alternative of sacrificing one of its war aims—the preservation of slavery—in order to achieve the other—an independent southern nation. In The Gray and the Black, Robert F. Durden reconstructs this intensely passionate debate that cuts to the heart of what the war was about for the South. Throughout his narrative, Durden lets the participants speak for themselves—in journal extracts, newspaper articles, letters, and speeches. These documents and Durden’s perceptive commentary demonstrate with sad finality that, when faced with this ultimate choice, southerners, with certain fascinating exceptions, could not bring themselves to abandon the “peculiar institution.”
