Book excerpt: The International Conference Zaragoza-Pau on Mathematics and its Applications was organized by the Departamento de Matemática Aplicada, the Departamento de Métodos Estadísticos and the Departamento de Matemáticas, all of them from the Universidad de Zaragoza (Spain), and the Laboratoire de Mathématiques et de leurs Applications, from the Université de Pau et des Pays de l’Adour (France). This conference has been held every two years since 1989. The aim of this conference is to present recent advances in Applied Mathematics, Statistics and Pure Mathematics, putting special emphasis on subjects linked to petroleum engineering and environmental problems. The Fourteenth Conference took place in Jaca (Spain) from 12nd to 15th September 2016. During those four days, 99 mathematicians, coming from di erent universities, research institutes or the industrial sector, attended 14 plenary lectures, 62 contributed talks and a poster session with 4 posters. We note that in this edition there were 11 mini-symposia, two of them co-organized by colleagues from the Universidad de Zaragoza and the Université de Pau et des Pays de l’Adour.

Book excerpt: This book provides a detailed study of nonlinear partial differential equations satisfying certain nonstandard growth conditions which simultaneously extend polynomial, inhomogeneous and fully anisotropic growth. The common property of the many different kinds of equations considered is that the growth conditions of the highest order operators lead to a formulation of the equations in Musielak–Orlicz spaces. This high level of generality, understood as full anisotropy and inhomogeneity, requires new proof concepts and a generalization of the formalism, calling for an extended functional analytic framework. This theory is established in the first part of the book, which serves as an introduction to the subject, but is also an important ingredient of the whole story. The second part uses these theoretical tools for various types of PDEs, including abstract and parabolic equations but also PDEs arising from fluid and solid mechanics. For connoisseurs, there is a short chapter on homogenization of elliptic PDEs. The book will be of interest to researchers working in PDEs and in functional analysis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph offers the reader a treatment of the theory of evolution PDEs with nonstandard growth conditions. This class includes parabolic and hyperbolic equations with variable or anisotropic nonlinear structure. We develop methods for the study of such equations and present a detailed account of recent results. An overview of other approaches to the study of PDEs of this kind is provided. The presentation is focused on the issues of existence and uniqueness of solutions in appropriate function spaces and on the study of the specific qualitative properties of solutions, such as localization in space and time, extinction in a finite time and blow-up, or nonexistence of global in time solutions. Special attention is paid to the study of the properties intrinsic to solutions of equations with nonstandard growth.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the International Conference on Recent Advances in PDEs and Applications, in honor of Hugo Beirão da Veiga's 70th birthday, held from February 17–21, 2014, in Levico Terme, Italy. The conference brought together leading experts and researchers in nonlinear partial differential equations to promote research and to stimulate interactions among the participants. The workshop program testified to the wide-ranging influence of Hugo Beirão da Veiga on the field of partial differential equations, in particular those related to fluid dynamics. In his own work, da Veiga has been a seminal influence in many important areas: Navier-Stokes equations, Stokes systems, non-Newtonian fluids, Euler equations, regularity of solutions, perturbation theory, vorticity phenomena, and nonlinear potential theory, as well as various degenerate or singular models in mathematical physics. This same breadth is reflected in the mathematical papers included in this volume.

Book excerpt: This book primarily concerns quasilinear and semilinear elliptic and parabolic partial differential equations, inequalities, and systems. The exposition leads the reader through the general theory based on abstract (pseudo-) monotone or accretive operators as fast as possible towards the analysis of concrete differential equations, which have specific applications in continuum (thermo-) mechanics of solids and fluids, electrically (semi-) conductive media, modelling of biological systems, or in mechanical engineering. Selected parts are mainly an introduction into the subject while some others form an advanced textbook. The second edition simplifies and extends the exposition at particular spots and augments the applications especially towards thermally coupled systems, magnetism, and more. The intended audience is graduate and PhD students as well as researchers in the theory of partial differential equations or in mathematical modelling of distributed parameter systems. ------ The monograph contains a wealth of material in both the abstract theory of steady-state or evolution equations of monotone and accretive type and concrete applications to nonlinear partial differential equations from mathematical modeling. The organization of the material is well done, and the presentation, although concise, is clear, elegant and rigorous. (...) this book is a notable addition to the existing literature. Also, it certainly will prove useful to engineers, physicists, biologists and other scientists interested in the analysis of (...) nonlinear differential models of the real world. Each of the four chapters focuses on a different problem in fluid flow accompanied by an overview of available older results. The chapters are extended lecture notes from the ESSAM school "Mathematical Aspects of Fluid Flows" held in Kácov (Czech Republic) in May/June 2017. The lectures were presented by Dominic Breit (Heriot-Watt University Edinburgh), Yann Brenier (École Polytechnique, Palaiseau), Pierre-Emmanuel Jabin (University of Maryland) and Christian Rohde (Universität Stuttgart), and cover various aspects of mathematical fluid mechanics – from Euler equations, compressible Navier-Stokes equations and stochastic equations in fluid mechanics to equations describing two-phase flow; from the modeling and mathematical analysis of equations to numerical methods. Although the chapters feature relatively recent results, they are presented in a form accessible to PhD students in the field of mathematical fluid mechanics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a short introduction to partial differential equations (PDEs). It is primarily addressed to graduate students and researchers, who are new to PDEs. The book offers a user-friendly approach to the analysis of PDEs, by combining elementary techniques and fundamental modern methods. The author focuses the analysis on four prototypes of PDEs, and presents two approaches for each of them. The first approach consists of the method of analytical and classical solutions, and the second approach consists of the method of weak (variational) solutions. In connection with the approach of weak solutions, the book also provides an introduction to distributions, Fourier transform and Sobolev spaces. The book ends with an appendix chapter, which complements the previous chapters with proofs, examples and remarks. This book can be used for an intense one-semester, or normal two-semester, PDE course. The reader is expected to have knowledge of linear algebra and of differential equations, a good background in real and complex calculus and a modest background in analysis and topology. The book has many examples, which help to better understand the concepts, highlight the key ideas and emphasize the sharpness of results, as well as a section of problems at the end of each chapter.
