Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both carefully researched and engaging, this small book invites the reader into the story of a remarkable fourth-century Cappadocian woman, St. Macrina the Younger, who met challenges that may seem familiar today. Surrounded by polarizing political conflict, in an empire divided by growing disparities between rich and poor, Macrina lived through earthquakes and disastrous droughts. She saw people displaced by war and severe weather, pushed into the ranks of the hungry and houseless. She suffered breast cancer and lost loved ones in tragic, unexpected deaths. Her response was nothing less audacious, fascinating, and inspiring than a commitment to know, reveal, and reflect God in her actions, and to make her home a microcosm of gospel life—an inclusive community of love, equality, simplicity, labor, caring, and generosity. The story begins with Macrina’s parents among Christian refugees hiding in the hills during the Great Persecution. Restored to their family estates after the Edict of Milan, they raised two of the Cappadocian Fathers and two other saints. In this book, we follow their eldest child, Macrina, as her lived faith changes the course of her own life, and gradually and steadily permeates and remakes her family and community.

Book excerpt: “Wealth without work Pleasure without conscience Science without humanity Knowledge without character Politics without principle Commerce without morality Worship without sacrifice. https://vidjambov.blogspot.com/2023/01/book-inventory-vladimir-djambov-talmach.html The word of God, being the most true and perfect rule of piety, as said, all Christians need, but shepherds, that is, bishops and priests, especially: for they took the “key of understanding” ( Luke 11:52 ), which is the word of God “No one can serve two masters ,” says the Lord ( Matt. 6:24 ). About this, St. John Chrysostom teaches: “Do not tell me that you are not worshiping the golden idol, but show me that you are not doing what the gold commands you to do. For the images of idolatry are different: one honors the mammon for gentlemen, another - the womb for God, another - the most universal lust. You do not devour oxen like the Greeks, but much worse, you slaughter your soul; you don’t kneel, you don’t worship, but with great obedience you do everything that commands you womb, gold and lust torment. Therefore, the Greeks are vile, because our passions have been enriched.” (Conversation 6 on the Epistle to the Romans).

Book Synopsis The Nature of the Sufi Path by : Anab Whitehouse
Download or read book The Nature of the Sufi Path written by Anab Whitehouse and published by Bilquees Press. This book was released on 2018-11-06 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The material in The Nature of the Sufi Path consists of 70 commentaries on a book entitled Sufism: A Short Introduction by Professor William C. Chittick. Many, if not most, of the paragraphs that comprise the 163 pages (preface plus text) of Professor Chittick’s book contain problems, errors, misleading statements, and/or incorrect understandings concerning Islam, in general, and the Sufi path, in particular. This is both surprising and disturbing since the author is someone who, apparently, enjoys a considerable reputation in North America -- and, perhaps, elsewhere in the world -- as an expert on, and scholar of, the Sufi mystical tradition. I do not claim that what I say in this book is a definitive, exhaustive, ‘incapable-of-being-improved-upon’ treatment of the Sufi path. Rather, my hope is that the present book might move a person closer to the truth concerning the nature of that path than Professor Chittick’s aforementioned introduction to Sufism does and, as such, would represent an improvement over his work.

Book Synopsis The Divine Magician by : Peter Rollins
Download or read book The Divine Magician written by Peter Rollins and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2015-01-20 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this mind-bending exploration of traditional Christianity, firebrand Peter Rollins turns the tables on conventional wisdom, offering a fresh perspective focused on a life filled with love. Peter Rollins knows one magic trick—now, make sure you watch closely. It has three parts: the Pledge, the Turn, and the Prestige. In Divine Magician, each part comes into play as he explores a radical view of interacting with the world in love. Rollins argues that the Christian event, reenacted in the Eucharist, is indeed a type of magic trick, one that is echoed in the great vanishing acts performed by magicians throughout the ages. In this trick, a divine object is presented to us (the Pledge), disappears (the Turn), and then returns (the Prestige). But just as the returned object in a classic vanishing act is not really the same object—but another that looks the same—so this book argues that the return of God is not simply the return of what was initially presented, but rather a radical way of interacting with the world. In an effort to unearth the power of Christianity, Rollins uses this framework to explain the mystery of faith that has been lost on the church. In the same vein as Rob Bell’s bestseller Love Wins, this book pushes the boundaries of theology, presenting a stirring vision at the forefront of re-imagined modern Christianity. As a dynamic speaker as he is in writing, Rollins examines traditional religious notions from a revolutionary and refreshingly original perspective. At the heart of his message is a life lived through profound love. Just perhaps, says Rollins, the radical message found in Christianity might be one that the church can show allegiance to.

Book Synopsis Meows from the Manse by : Barry Blackstone
Download or read book Meows from the Manse written by Barry Blackstone and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2022-08-30 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you are a cat lover and a Christian, then this book is for you. Seventeen years in the making, Meows from the Manse is a collection of remembrances and reflections from a Maine pastor about his “cat of a lifetime” and the years they lived together at the parsonage (manse) of the Emmanuel Baptist Church in Ellsworth, Maine. Eddie was a stray tomcat that eventually worked his way into the heart of this reluctant minister, despite the fact that this man of the cloth never liked cats. Surrounded by cats in his younger years on a family farm, and always living with a cat or two because of his wife’s love affair with cats (Coleen’s last cat would live twenty-two years—sixteen of them with Eddie), and his kid’s love of cats, the exploits and experience with Eddie would change this pastor’s mind about cats, teaching him the biblical challenge of Job 12:7: “But ask now the beasts and they shall teach thee!” Relive the years with Eddie and the Pearl (Coleen’s cat) and the enriching spiritual lessons this preacher learned from his constant companion and friend through the challenging years as a pastor of a small coastal church, the death of a thirty-nine-year-old son, and the passing of his dear wife of forty-eight years. The cat tales begin with Eddie’s arrival across from the pastor’s church and end with the passing of Eddie from throat cancer. In between are insights you might not believe from the Bible, but for the author were some of the best sermons he heard during that period of his life. Without a doubt for this widower, the messages (meows) from Eddie were some of the best he ever heard, but he will let you be the judge!

Book Synopsis Celestial Delights by : Francis Reddy
Download or read book Celestial Delights written by Francis Reddy and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-11-12 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Celestial Delights is essentially a 'TV Guide' for teh sky. This will be its third edition. This title, which has aggregated sales of about 20,000 copies to date in its two previous editions and has found a niche with skygazers, is much awaited. Through extensive graphics integrated with an eight-year-long calendar of sky events, it provides a look at "don't miss" sky events, mostly for naked-eye and binocular observing. The book is organized by ease of observation - lunar phases and the brighter planets come first, while solar eclipses, the aurora, and comets come later. Celestial Delights also includes a hefty dose of sky lore, astronomical history, and clear overviews of current science. It provides a handy reference to upcoming naked-eye events, with information broken out in clear and simple diagrams and tables that are cross-referenced against a detailed almanac for each year covered. Most broad-ranging astronomy field guides focus on stars, constellations, and the deep sky, but tend to ignore planetary events, which are in by far the most widely observable aspects of the changing night sky. Celestial Delights puts a variety of information all in one place, presents it in a friendly way that does not require prior in-depth astronomical knowledge, but provides the context and historical background for understanding events that astronomical computer programs or web sites lack.
Book Synopsis Christian Solar Symbolism and Jesus the Sun of Justice by : Kevin Duffy
Download or read book Christian Solar Symbolism and Jesus the Sun of Justice written by Kevin Duffy and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-02-24 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This pioneering study of Christian sun symbolism describes how biblical light motifs were taken up with energy in the early Church. Kevin Duffy argues that, living in a world of 24/7 illumination, we need to reconnect with the sun and its light to appreciate the meaning of light in the Bible and Christian tradition. With such a retrieval we can appreciate Pope Francis's insistence that, like the moon, the Church does not shine with its own light, and assess the claim that the Eucharist is to be celebrated 'Ad Orientem', that is towards the rising sun in the East. Liturgy, architecture, poetry and the writings of saints and theologians such as Augustine, Hildegard of Bingen, Francis of Assisi, and Thomas Traherne offer abundant resources for a much needed ressourcement. While Christ was preached as the True Sun among sun-worshipping Aztecs, and the consecrated host was placed in a solar monstrance on Baroque altars, in the modern era solar themes have been neglected. In this accessible work, the author suggests that we rebalance a spiritual symbolism that has over-emphasised darkness and cloud at the expense of light and sun. He proposes a creative retrieval of the traditional title of Christ as the Sun of Justice. This title blends the personal, the social and the cosmic/ecological, and speaks powerfully to a secularising era that contemporaries Friedrich Nietzsche and Thérèse of Lisieux both described as one where the sun does not shine.
