Thus, Annabel Coleman has been shipped off by her father to marry a man she has never met—Jesse Falcon—in a state she has never visited—Colorado. Arriving with her will be her childhood friend, Gisela Craig. Not only for companionship, but because no true lady ever travels alone. The two look enough alike to be sisters: both blessed with a creamy southern belle complexion, buttercup-colored hair, and greenish-gold eyes. The difference lies in their personalities. Annabel seems remote and standoffish, capable but cool; while perky Gisela captures hearts and loyalties everywhere. But Annabel, for a number of reasons, doesn’t want to get married. So she persuades (coerces) a reluctant Gisela to take her place. Thus, Annabel becomes Gisela; Gisela becomes Annabel. Trying to keep themselves straight, not to mention keeping straight the stories they tell the Falcon family members, leads to confusion, mix-ups, and remorse. When Gisela falls flat-out in love with Annabel’s intended, and moves ahead with wedding plans, Annabel realizes there is no place for her here on the Cottonwood Ranch. Trying to decide where her destination might be, and what she can do to support herself once there, poses a dilemma. But not as much of a dilemma as the fact that Samuel Falcon, younger brother of Jesse, has gotten involved in the whole muddle. Because Sam, who is, courtesy of patriarch Charlie, already betrothed to a mail order bride from Missouri, has decided he prefers Gisela Craig (actually Annabel Coleman) instead.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary popular culture stereotypes Filipina women as sex workers, domestic laborers, mail order brides, and caregivers. These figures embody the gendered and sexual politics of representing the Philippine nation in the Filipina/o diaspora. Gina K. Velasco explores the tensions within Filipina/o American cultural production between feminist and queer critiques of the nation and popular nationalism as a form of resistance to neoimperialism and globalization. Using a queer diasporic analysis, Velasco examines the politics of nationalism within Filipina/o American cultural production to consider an essential question: can a queer and feminist imagining of the diaspora reconcile with gendered tropes of the Philippine nation? Integrating a transnational feminist analysis of globalized gendered labor with a consideration of queer cultural politics, Velasco envisions forms of feminist and queer diasporic belonging, while simultaneously foregrounding nationalist movements as vital instruments of struggle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perfectly blending a vast historical scope with intensely individual viewpoints, this stirring collection of stories brings a man-on-the-ground perspective to a huge range of military history, with stories of a quarter-century of war from nearly every corner of the earth, including Europe; the Pacific; mainland Asia; a tense confrontation in Guantanamo Bay during the Cuban Missile Crisis; POW camps in Germany, Japan, and California; and the San Joaquin Valley home front from the 1940s through the 1960s. These 72 highly individualized narratives of combat, military service, and the personal sacrifices of war--penned by ordinary San Joaquin Valley residents and buttressed with more than 100 personal photographs--bring commentaries from soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines, nurses, ambulance drivers, and civilians. In simple, direct, and authentic language, with stories both horrific and touching, ""Stories of Service: Volume 2"" perfectly illustrates the personal side of war.

Book excerpt: Troping the Body: Gender, Etiquette, and Performance is an interdisciplinary study of etiquette texts, conduct literature, and advice books and films. GwendolynAudrey Foster analyzes the work of such women authors as Emily Post, Christine de Pizan, Hannah Webster Foster, Emily Brontë, Frances E. W. Harper, and Martha Stewart as well as such women filmmakers as Lois Weber and Kasi Lemmons. "Specifically," Foster notes, "I was interested in the possibility of locating power and agency in the voices of popular etiquette writers." Her investigation led her to analyze etiquette and conduct literature from the Middle Ages to the present. Within this wide scope, she redefines the boundaries of conduct literature through a theoretical examination of the gendered body as it is positioned in conduct books, etiquette texts, poetry, fiction, and film. Drawing on Bakhtin, Gates, Foucault, and the new school of performative feminism to develop an interdisciplinary approach to conduct literature--and literature as conduct--Foster brings a unique perspective to the analysis of ways in which the body has been gendered, raced, and constructed in terms of class and sexuality. Even though women writers have been actively writing conduct and etiquette texts since the medieval period, few critical examinations of such literature exist in the fields of cultural studies and literary criticism. Thus, Foster's study fills a gap and does so uniquely in the existing literature. In examining these voices of authority over the body, Foster identifies the dialogic in the texts of this discipline that both supports and disrupts the hegemonic discourse of a gendered social order.
