Book excerpt: Excerpt from Waves of the Sea, and Other Water Waves These things, and others of a like nature, I have watched for many years, and I have set down in this book what I have been able to add to former knowledge. I have written to inform the mind, not to stir the imagination. The appearances are familiar and recurrent, and I do not attempt to recall them by much word-painting, but the precise observation and measurement of waves, and the discovery of the mode of their production, are matters of difficulty, and to these I have given myself. My investigations on water waves have been prosecuted during the last fifteen years. They have been made in many parts of the world, which I have visited principally for the study of surface waves of different kinds. The chief results as far as they, relate to water waves are contained in this volume, which contains also a critical examination of observations made by a number of seamen and others upon the size and speed of ocean waves. Most of Part relating. To tidal bores and other waves in rivers, was published in the Geographical Journal and in Engineering in 1906, but Parts I. And II., which relate to waves of the sea, are new, and were written in I 909-1 0. Side by side with the observations of water waves, I have during the same period since I 89 5) been investigating the progressive transverse ridges which are produced in sand and snow by the action of water or wind, and I have made observations upon earthquakes and other wave phenomena which come within the province of physical geography. These I intend to publish later. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Know Your Surf The waves which one encounters at sea and which form the breakers along beaches are almost always caused by winds. There. Are other types of waves in the ocean such as the waves that are formed by a ship moving in the ocean and the tidal waves which occur occasionally and often cause great damage. Tidal waves, technically known as seismic waves, are caused either directly or indirectly by earthquakes on the ocean bottom, and have nothing at all to do with the tides. Those caused by underwater earthquakes are rare, and the ones formed by ships are of little significance. The types that affect amphibious operations are the waves generated by wind blowing over the ocean surface. At first these waves are very small, like the ones formed on a pond; then they grow larger. In general, the greater the area Over which the wind blows, the longer it blows and the stronger the wind, the heavier is the sea (the higher and longer the waves). This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Water Waves Produced by Explosions In our analysis we assume that the surface elevation and the accompanying water motion, are symmetric about an axis through the center of the disturbance. If r denotes distance from this axis and t denotes time then we may write n We also assume that the water is of finite uniform depth, which we denote by h and that the linear theory of surface waves is applicable. Both of these assumptions will be analysed in a later report. In the next two sections we present and discuss the results of our analyses for the cases of initial impulse and initial displacement respectively. Typical graphs of the wave height as a function of r and of t are included. Then in section IV these resulte are applied to the problem of wave production by explosions. The mathematical analysis is contained in an appendix. A list of references to previous work on this subject is appended. Of the previous work the earliest, that of Poisson is the most relevant. However he considers water of infinite depth. Furthermore he obtains detailed results only for paraboloidal and ellipsoidal depressions. Burnside [h] also considers infinite depth, but only twodimensional motion. He obtains a series for the wave motion produced by an initial elevation of very spe01al shape. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wave of Translation in the Oceans of Water, Air, and Ether OF the three papers now submitted to that portion of the reading public which does not shrink from some degree of mental effort, two see the light for the first time. They were prepared for the Royal Society of London in 1881, the author hoping to have been able to have read them there himself, with a view to subsequent publication in the Transactions of the Society; but a continued illness obliged him to re nounce this expectation, and it remained to his family to carry out his wish as they best could, in order that his later researches and speculations in physical science should not be lost, though he himself could not super intend their issue. To this circumstance must be attributed whatever defects or shortcomings may be found in the papers as now published. These remarks apply with special force to the paper on Ether. After these two papers were sent in to the Royal Society, it was suggested to him, that without some previous knowledge of the researches which he had formerly made, between the years 183 3 and 1840, in Hydrodynamics, and notably in the nature, character. Download or read book Waves and Beaches written by Kim McCoy and published by Patagonia. This book was released on 2021-03-16 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bestselling Classic Updated for Surfers, Sailors, Oceanographers, Climate Activists, and Those Who Love the Sea First published in 1963 and updated in 1979, this classic was an essential handbook for anyone who studies, surfs, protects, or is fascinated by the ocean. The original author, Willard Bascom, was a master of the subject and included a wealth of information, based on theory and statistics, but also anecdotal observation and personal experience. It brought to the general public understanding of the awesome and complex power of the waves. This revision from Kim McCoy adds recent facts and anecdotes to update the book's relevance in the time of climate change. One of the most significant effects of global warming will be sea-level rise. What will this mean to waves and beaches, and what effects are we already seeing? New text and photos cover events such as the Indian Ocean tsunami of 2004, Hurricane Katrina flooding of 2005, and the 2011 earthquake and resulting devastation in Fukishima. As well as students, surfers, and the general public, this updated edition of a beloved classic is an essential handbook for climate scientists and ocean activists, providing clear explanations and detailed resources for the constant battle to preserve the shore.
