Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are you managing a business or a business unit or is your goal to achieve such positions? Then this book is for you. It summarizes what I have learned about operational leadership over more than 50 years as a business manager and top management consultant: Operational leadership determines company success. Top management job is to spot the waves of opportunity and lead the company in riding them. Visionary and strategic thinking is required to spot waves. Operational leadership leads the company in riding them. It is like surfing big waves. To spot one is important, but success lies in riding it (operational execution) without falling off the surfboard. For success in operational leadership, you must do five things right, in a never-ending cycle of agile leadership: 1) Set the right operational goals to establish the line on which you want to surf your wave. You only need one single goal. 2) Plan. Build your surfboard. Design the right plan: Focus it on resolving constraints. Write it down on one single page. 3) Execute. Surf your wave. Follow the goal to deliver the obligations outlined in your operational plan. 4) Check. Review progress against your goals and execution of your operational plan. Go back to planning if the operational plans need to be adjusted. 5) Contribute the value required from operational leaders: Lead your Plan-Execute-Check cycle to spin faster than your competitors. Institutionalize the culture of operational excellence. Operational leadership is all about surfing monster waves of opportunity. It strains us to our limits. Yet it is the most fascinating and rewarding task in business management.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surfing has been a significant sport and cultural practice in Hawai‘i for more than 1,500 years. In the last century, facing increased marginalization on land, many Native Hawaiians have found refuge, autonomy, and identity in the waves. In Waves of Resistance Isaiah Walker argues that throughout the twentieth century Hawaiian surfers have successfully resisted colonial encroachment in the po‘ina nalu (surf zone). The struggle against foreign domination of the waves goes back to the early 1900s, shortly after the overthrow of the Hawaiian kingdom, when proponents of this political seizure helped establish the Outrigger Canoe Club—a haoles (whites)-only surfing organization in Waikiki. A group of Hawaiian surfers, led by Duke Kahanamoku, united under Hui Nalu to compete openly against their Outrigger rivals and established their authority in the surf. Drawing from Hawaiian language newspapers and oral history interviews, Walker’s history of the struggle for the po‘ina nalu revises previous surf history accounts and unveils the relationship between surfing and colonialism in Hawai‘i. This work begins with a brief look at surfing in ancient Hawai‘i before moving on to chapters detailing Hui Nalu and other Waikiki surfers of the early twentieth century (including Prince Jonah Kuhio), the 1960s radical antidevelopment group Save Our Surf, professional Hawaiian surfers like Eddie Aikau, whose success helped inspire a newfound pride in Hawaiian cultural identity, and finally the North Shore’s Hui O He‘e Nalu, formed in 1976 in response to the burgeoning professional surfing industry that threatened to exclude local surfers from their own beaches. Walker also examines how Hawaiian surfers have been empowered by their defiance of haole ideas of how Hawaiian males should behave. For example, Hui Nalu surfers successfully combated annexationists, married white women, ran lucrative businesses, and dictated what non-Hawaiians could and could not do in their surf—even as the popular, tourist-driven media portrayed Hawaiian men as harmless and effeminate. Decades later, the media were labeling Hawaiian surfers as violent extremists who terrorized haole surfers on the North Shore. Yet Hawaiians contested, rewrote, or creatively negotiated with these stereotypes in the waves. The po‘ina nalu became a place where resistance proved historically meaningful and where colonial hierarchies and categories could be transposed. 25 illus.

Book excerpt: Humanity is at a crossroads between the world as we know it and the rapid pace of disruption. The smallest changes are reshaping our world faster than we can comprehend. Over the next few years, we will experience more disruption than in the previous 100 years. Do we notice this change happening? Are we numb or oblivious to this change? Are things changing too fast and too regularly to notice? Every modern change presents as a giant, rogue wave emerging on the horizon--will we surf these waves with mastery? Or will we let them swallow us whole? We live in the greatest period of opportunity in all of human history; how will you gain from it? Furthermore, how will you influence and shape both your life and the future of humanity? Do you have a plan to engage exponential change in your life? Our political and social systems are outdated, and potent disruption is heading for them like a freight train. Increased opportunities bring elevated risk, and the public's trust in companies, governments, the media, and even science are all under attack. How do you filter through the noise? How do you make sound, optimal, and rational decisions faster than ever? As the waves of material science, nanotechnology, biotechnology, blockchain, AI, and dozens of other industries collide with one another, rogue waves will emerge and obliterate life as we know it. Everything, including what it means to be human, will be disrupted. We must proactively consider the ethics of tomorrow, today. This book presents a gripping and insightful framework on how to pick up a board and surf the rogue waves of the 21st century. Eric's original insights will help business leaders understand the onslaught of the complexity of the disruption they face. Not just in the office, but throughout the everyday encounters of daily life as they navigate and unshackle future potential. No more watching from the shore. No more excuses. The decisions and actions we take today, no matter the size, will ultimately determine the fate of humanity. Why fight the waves of advancement and progression when we can use them to our advantage? For it is riding this surf where we find our way to a flourishing future that is more ethical, all-encompassing, and sustainable. Surf's up!

Book excerpt: Make Waves encourages readers to step up and be the one to initiate change in their work and lives. Author Patti Johnson walks readers through the tools and techniques that they can use to create change in their own situations. Johnson elaborates on these tools even further to give readers a sense of how to encourage and instill these "wave-making" behaviors in others within their organization. Using several diverse case studies as illustrative examples, Make Waves highlights the important steps that individuals at any level can take toward positive change. By reinforcing readers' desires to contribute and make a difference, Johnson connects on an individual level and bridges the gap between that desire and the actions necessary to realize bigger changes. Change can be big or small. It is the act of stepping up that Johnson embraces, as well as the ripple effect on those around. Interviews with famous Wave Makers, as well as everyday people, illustrate why it is important to be the one to start change. Wave Makers profiled include: Clint Hurdle: Manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates; believes in positive attitude and culture and changes the MLB clubhouse; this year leading the Pirates to their first winning season since 1992. Charley Johnson: Started Pay It Forward foundation. Joe Nussbaum: Started Big Event at Texas A&M when in college in the '80s and has continued to grow; largest one-day college community service day in the country and has been adopted by over seventy universities. Emma Scheffler: High school soccer player who started Insulin Angels, a nonprofit for children diagnosed with diabetes, after her own diagnosis; feared her dream of college soccer was over, so engaged other students and local hospitals after thinking about how to make her diagnosis a positive. Allen Stephenson: Started Southern Tide at twenty-two-years old when in med school and followed a passion to create a clothing line; built momentum by creating interest and participation on southern college campuses; they are now growing rapidly and it started with a great polo shirt.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hope and Hospitality for Migrating People Never have so many people left their homes and migrated to other parts of the world as we’ve seen in recent years. This phenomenon creates as many opportunities as challenges. We are witnessing a massive increase in urbanization, pluralization, multiculturalism, and interfaith dialogue. What are the implications for the church as it tries to reach the nations? Tides of Opportunity brings together experts from diverse backgrounds to consider the practical significance of this mass migration. The reasons for these population movements are as varied as the people. Sadiri Joy Tira explores several causes, like military conflict, economic hardship, and natural disasters. The contributors not only explain such trends but suggest possible ways to engage with diaspora neighbors. Through case studies, this volume also examines lesser-known dynamics, such as sex trafficking and the movement of immigrants to rural areas. This book challenges us to find more creative and integrated mission strategies for effectively reaching out to the various “peoples on the move” with the gospel. How will you respond to the tides of opportunity?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Successfully starting a new business venture depends upon more than having a brilliant idea, getting funding, and getting the product or service to market. Entrepreneurs must also learn to read the market and understand the environments in which they must operate. Entrepreneurial Opportunity places the emphasis on reading and making the most of things that may be beyond the entrepreneur’s control, from defaulting contractors to the opening and closing of business niches. It also considers previously under-considered options, such as "the political entrepreneur." This long over-due text provides a far more realistic view of entrepreneurial opportunity and the importance of the business environment. Yet despite its realist stance, the book is decidedly optimistic, showing readers how markets evolve over time and present opportunities through that evolution. As Clydesdale states, "it’s not always fair out there," but this book captures the excitement of the market and its role in delivering opportunities. Drawing on a broad range of academic research, Entrepreneurial Opportunity is written in a manner that is accessible for students and practitioners, with examples and mini-cases from a variety of industries, including high technology, hospitality, and motion pictures.
