Book excerpt: Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2001 in the subject Physics - Astronomy, grade: sehr gut, University of Graz (Institute for Geophysics and Astronomy), language: English, abstract: In this thesis the topic of substructure analysis of Jovian S-bursts is discussed. As Jovian S-bursts are planetary non-thermal radio emissions with a very intrinsic substructure characteristic, it is necessary to focus on the waveform of these signals. Common techniques suffer on one hand from the methodology itself (e.g. Fourier) and on the other hand cannot achieve enough time-frequency resolution. The wave initiated by the emission phenomena, the cyclotron maser instability, gets modified through its propagation till the antenna and then further on through the receiver chain. All these effects have been carefully taken into consideration. The waveform receiving system WFR is a fully digital broadband kind of transient recorder. It operates at the borders of at present technology possibilities. Observation campaigns with this device have been carried out at Nancay (France) and UTR-2 (Ukraine). The data obtained are unique since it is possible for the first time to work on broadband waveforms of received S-bursts. Various data analysis techniques, as for example Wavelet transform, show up the possibilities as well as the problems obtained by this procedure. Finally possible future projects like the usage of the WFR for broadband VLBI or for space applications are discussed.

Book excerpt: This book contains the Proceedings of the second "Rencontres de l'Observatoire" devoted to Physics of Space: Growth Points and Problems, held at the Paris Observatory at Meudon, on January 10-14, 2000. The last quarter of the century has seen the vertiginous growth of space achievements and the exploration of much of the heliosphere with beautifully instrumented space probes. Even though the heliosphere is merely one particular cosmic environment, it is presently the only one accessible to in situ measurements and hence plays a unique role as a natural laboratory for physics and astrophysics. In this spirit, the conference highlighted recent achievements which have changed our view of the physics of space, with emphasis on the bridges between space plasma physics and other disciplines. The contributions include the physics of collisionless plasmas - in particular particle acceleration and dissipation, dusty plasmas, cosmic winds and jets, the environments of planetary bodies and pulsars, novel space detection techniques, and some landmarks of space physics history and possible futures.

Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2003 in the subject Computer Science - Theory, grade: sehr gut, University of Graz, language: English, abstract: Radio astronomical receivers are spectral analyzing devices capable to resolve the acquired signal in terms of time and frequency resolution. For fast fluctuating radio bursts, like Jovian S-bursts these receivers suffer from their low spectral resolution. Further on, phasing information is generally not contained in common spectral analysis. The development of the so-called waveform receiver (WFR) is a successful step further being able to get informations on S-burst substructures. By capturing the waveform rather than the derivated dynamic spectrum, post processing methods allow various methods of detailed signal substructure analysis. Especially the method of wavelet transformation turns out to be very effective, when dealing with intrinsic signal information. This master thesis is a deep in detail description of the waveform receiving system. It starts with an overview chapter, describing the kind of scientific work possible with this system. Chapter 2 describes the hard and software configuration of the whole system. Chapter 3 is a user manual and shows how to operate the system from installation, observation to data backup. Chapter 4 describes how to perform data analysis with matlab. This data analysis includes Fourier and Wavelet transformation. The appendix shows a preview collection of the best data sets retrieved with this systems during two observation campaigns in Ukraine and France.

Book excerpt: Representatives of several scientific communities, such as planetary scientists, astronomers, space physicists, chemists and astrobiologists have met with the aim to review the knowledge on four major themes: (1) the study of the formation and evolution processes of the outer planets and their satellites, beginning with the formation of compounds and planetesimals in the solar nebula, and the subsequent evolution of the interiors of the outer planets, (2) a comparative study of the atmospheres of the outer planets and Titan, (3) the study of the planetary magnetospheres and their interactions with the solar wind, and (4) the formation and properties of satellites and rings, including their interiors, surfaces, and their interaction with the solar wind and the magnetospheres of the outer planets. Beyond these topics, the implications for the prebiotic chemical evolution on Europa and Titan are reviewed. At the time of publication, the study of the outer planets is particularly motivated by the fact that the Saturn system is being investigated by the Cassini-Huygens mission.

Book excerpt: Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts aims to present a comprehensive documen tation of the literature concerning all aspects of astronomy, astrophysics, and their border fields. It is devoted to the recording, summarizing, and indexing of the relevant publications throughout the world. Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts is prepared by a special department of the Astronomisches Rechen-Institut under the auspices of the International Astronomical Union. Volume 39 records literature published in 1985 and received before August 15, 1985. Some older documents which we received late and which are not surveyed in earlier volumes are included too. We acknowledge with thanks contributions of our colleagues all over the world. We also express our gratitude to all organiza tions, observatories, and publishers which provide us with complimentary copies of their publications. On account of the introduction of an object index the scope of index information will be considerably enlarged beginning with this volume. In connection with the subject index an additional source to satisfy the needs of retrieval is opened up. Starting with Volume 33, all the recording, correction, and data processing work was done by means of computers. The recording was done by our technical staff members Ms. Helga Ballmann, Ms. Mona El-Choura, Ms. Monika Kohl, Ms. Sylvia Matyssek. Ms. Karin Burkhardt, Ms. Susanne Schlotelburg, and Mr. Stefan Wagner supported our task by careful proofreading. It is a pleasure to thank them all for their encouragement. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The scientific and technical basis underpinning modern measurement techniques used for electromagnetic quantities and phenonema is necessarily wide-ranging, as the electromagnetic environment spans all possible frequencies and wavelengths. Measurements must be applicable in fields as varied as nanotechnologies, telecommunications, meteorology, geo-location, radio-astronomy, health, biology, and many others. In order to adequately cover the many different facets of the topic, this book provides examples from the entire range of the electromagnetic spectrum — covering frequencies from several hertz to terahertz, and considering wavelength distances ranging from nanometers to light-years in optics. It then provides coverage of the various measurement techniques using electromagnetic waves for various applications, devoting chapters to each different field of application. This comprehensive book gives detailed information on: the various techniques and methods available to measure the key characteristics of electromagnetic waves, in terms of the local field and phase for a broad field of frequencies; determination of physical quantities such as distance, time, etc., using electromagnetic properties; new approaches to measurements in the field of electromagnetic distribution in complex structures media, such as biological tissues and in the nanosciences.
