Book excerpt: Wave Mechanics and Wave Loads on Marine Structures provides a new perspective on the calculation of wave forces on ocean structures, unifying the deterministic and probabilistic approaches to wave theory and combining the methods used in field and experimental measurement.Presenting his quasi-determinism (QD) theory and approach of using small-scale field experiments (SSFEs), author Paolo Boccotti simplifies the findings and techniques honed in his ground-breaking work to provide engineers and researchers with practical new methods of analysis. Including numerous worked examples and case studies, Wave Mechanics and Wave Loads on Marine Structures also discusses and provides useful FORTRAN programs, including a subroutine for calculating particle velocity and acceleration in wave groups, and programs for calculating wave loads on several kinds of structures. Solves the conceptual separation of deterministic and stochastic approaches to wave theory seen in other resources through the application of quasi-determinism (QD) theory Combines the distinct experimental activities of field measurements and wave tank experiment using small-scale field experiments (SSFEs) Simplifies and applies the ground-breaking work and techniques of this leading expert in wave theory and marine construction

Waves, currents, and winds are phenomena that act as load requirements in the design process of any offshore structure. While there are many types of offshore structures such as bridges, oil platforms, or wave energy converters, one type of structure currently gets the most attention: offshore wind turbines, which are expected to become one of the main sources of future energy supply. They are typically designed for a design life of 20 or 25 years and therefore must withstand all environmental conditions that can reasonably be expected during this time. To evaluate a design, one estimates its structural response under given environmental loading. This requires a description of the expected environmental conditions and a method to decide which environmental conditions should be considered as design requirements. This thesis addresses the design process of offshore structures. Engineering standards and guidelines describe the state of the art of this process and recommend models that shall be used to describe the environment and to estimate the extreme structural response. In particular, three design process steps where current methods can lead to problems are addressed: (1) Modeling the probability distribution of significant wave height; (2) modeling the joint distribution of wind speed and wave height; and (3) determining 50-year joint environmental extremes. New methods to deal with these three steps are proposed and evaluated. Finally, a case study on a 5 MW wind turbine is conducted.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dynamic Analysis of Offshore Structures appraises offshore structures, particularly the major sources of uncertainty in the design process. The book explains the fundamentals of probabilistic processes, the theory or analysis of sea states, and the random-vibration approach to structural response. The text describes the hydrodynamics of water waves, wave forecasting, and the statistical parameters associated with sea-states. The investigator can use Morison's equation to calculate the impact of wave forces acting on slender members such as on lattice-type structures. Or he can employ the diffraction theory to calculate wave forces acting on large-diameter bodies such as concrete gravity-type structures. Other environmental forces he should be concerned with are the effects of currents and winds. The book examines the theory of vibration (including the spectral approach), the theory of vibration on multi-degree-of-freedom structures, matrix analysis of structural response, problems of fatigue, and soil-structure interaction. The book notes the importance of the method of analysis used, with emphasis on the following: dynamic analysis, frequency domain, and linearization of drag. Two types of analysis follow linearization of drag: deterministic analysis (applied in a series of design waves which uses the long-term exceedance diagram for fatigue); or probabilistic analysis (used to study the behavior of the structure during the extreme design storm and its long term behavior for a range of sea states). The book can prove useful for structural, civil, or maritime engineers, as well as for students in one-year courses in offshore structure analysis at the postgraduate or final-year undergraduate level.

Book excerpt: This book provides detailed analysis methods and design guidelines for fire resistance, a vital consideration for offshore processing and production platforms. Recent advancements in the selection of various geometric structural forms for deep-water oil exploration and production require a detailed understanding of the design of offshore structures under special loads. Focusing on a relatively new aspect of offshore engineering, the book offers essential teaching material, illustrating and explaining the concepts discussed through many tutorials. It creates a basis for designing new courses for students of ocean engineering and naval architecture, civil engineering, and applied mechanics at both undergraduate and graduate levels. As such, its content can be used for self-study or as a text in structured courses and professional development programs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The analysis, design and construction of offshore structures is arguably one of the most demanding sets of tasks faced by the engineering profession. Over and above the usual conditions and situations met by land-based structures, offshore structures have the added complication of being placed in an ocean environment where hydrodynamic interaction effects and dynamic response become major considerations in their design. A basic understanding of a number of key subject areas is essential to an engineer likely to be involved in the design of offshore structures. Wave Mechanics and Wave Loads on Marine Structures provides a broad overview of some of the key factors in the analysis and design of offshore structures to be considered by an engineer uninitiated in the field of offshore engineering. Topics covered range from water wave theories, structure-fluid interaction in waves to the prediction of extreme values of response from spectral modeling approaches. It presents a new outlook on the measurement of wave forces on ocean structures, uniting the deterministic and probabilistic methodologies to wave theory and linking the methods used in field and experimental measurement.

This book was released on 2003-03-28 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Steel plated structures are important in a variety of marine and land-based applications, including ships, offshore platforms, power and chemical plants, box girder bridges and box girder cranes. The basic strength members in steel plated structures include support members (such as stiffeners and plate girders), plates, stiffened panels/grillages and box girders. During their lifetime, the structures constructed using these members are subjected to various types of loading which is for the most part operational, but may in some cases be extreme or even accidental. Ultimate Limit State Design of Steel Plated Structures reviews and describes both fundamentals and practical design procedures in this field. The derivation of the basic mathematical expressions is presented together with a thorough discussion of the assumptions and the validity of the underlying expressions and solution methods. Particularly valuable coverage in the book includes: * Serviceability and the ultimate limit state design of steel structural systems and their components * The progressive collapse and the design of damage tolerant structures in the context of marine accidents * Age related structural degradation such as corrosion and fatigue cracks Furthermore, this book is also an easily accessed design tool which facilitates learning by applying the concepts of the limit states for practice using a set of computer programs which can be downloaded. In addition, expert guidance on mechanical model test results as well as nonlinear finite element solutions, sophisticated design methodologies useful for practitioners in industries or research institutions, selected methods for accurate and efficient analyses of nonlinear behavior of steel plated structures both up to and after the ultimate strength is reached, is provided. Designed as both a textbook and a handy reference, the book is well suited to teachers and university students who are approaching the limit state design technology of steel plated structures for the first time. The book also meets the needs of structural designers or researchers who are involved in civil, marine and mechanical engineering as well as offshore engineering and naval architecture.
