Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beneath the coastal waters of the world lie thousands of artificial reefs. Some are old and retired freighters and ships that once plied the oceans of the world but now serve as habitats for marine life. Others are newer reefs that have been designed and built for specific applications. With the field of aquatic habitat technology continually growi

This book was released on 2015-09-22 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the interaction between art, design, technology and the social sciences. It features 56 papers that were presented at the International Symposium on Research of Arts, Design and Humanities, ISRADH 2014, held at Sutera Harbour Resort, Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia. Complete with helpful diagrams and tables, the papers cover such topics as artificial reef development, racial discourse in the social media, stoneware as a replacement material for modern ventilation walls, and factors contributing to internet abuse in the workplace. Overall, the coverage focuses on global design trends and demands with an emphasis on people, business and technology. Inside, readers will find information on art and science in industrial applications; art management and entrepreneurship; cognitive, psychological and behavioral science; design technology and sustainable development; humanities and social applications in quality of life; social implications of technology; and visual communication and technologies. Taking a multi-disciplinary approach, the book features insightful discussions among academicians and industrial practitioners on the evolution of design that will appeal to researchers, designers and students.
Book Synopsis A Physical and Computational Study of Semi-hemispherical Artificial Reef Breakwater Designs to Optimize Efficiency for Use as Shoreline Protection and Marine Habitat by : Sitara Devi Baboolal
Download or read book A Physical and Computational Study of Semi-hemispherical Artificial Reef Breakwater Designs to Optimize Efficiency for Use as Shoreline Protection and Marine Habitat written by Sitara Devi Baboolal and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Artificial Reef Breakwaters are hybrid structures designed to act as a submerged breakwater for coastal protection and an artificial reef to provide a foundation for growth of a healthy ocean habitat. They act as a barrier protecting the shoreline from the erosive effects of storm waves and create a safe habitat for marine animals in areas where they have been damaged or none exists. Unlike traditional shoreline protection methods, Artificial Reef Breakwaters are designed to sufficiently attenuate large storm waves while still allowing enough wave action to be transmitted past the breakwater to maintain a dynamic shoreline by preventing the disruption of littoral drift and starvation of down-drift beaches. The design of a successful Artificial Reef Breakwater must be stable and durable enough to withstand the forces caused by wave energy. Pre-fabricated modular designs can be specifically designed to obtain the specific results such as increased wave attenuation of large storm waves and provide marine habitats. Semi-hemispherical reef units, such as the ReeBall(TM), provide the stability, permeability, and crest width necessary for use as an Artificial Reef Breakwater. This study develops a new semi-hemispheric Artificial Reef Breakwater design and tests it at attenuating wave energy caused by large storms without the negative effects of traditional hard structure. This innovative design, when implemented, should improve shoreline protection from large storm waves. Numerous breakwater concept designs have been developed and the flow interaction with each structure computed using ANSYS Fluent to determine the optimal design. Physical models of the new design, named the Cavernous Reef, solid semi-hemispherical reef units, and the ReefBall(lTM) units were tested in a wave tank to acquire transmission coefficients and the shoreline response. Results for each structure from the study were compared, and the Cavernous Reef structure exhibited improved performance over the ReefBall(TM) at both wave height attenuation (approximately 10%) and Shoreline protection (5%-15%).
