Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laboratory studies were made on a 6-inch diameter circular pile, using both regular and irregular waves. Detailed force analyses were made of both sets of data. Harmonic analyses of the total horizontal force acting on a pile was made in order to examine carefully the mass coefficient and drag coefficient. An attempt was made to relate these coefficients to certain dimensionless parameters. Dimensional analysis showed that the coefficients depended not only upon Reynolds number, Froude number, and Iversen's modulus, but also upon the water depth-wave length ratio d/L and the time parameter t/T. Download or read book Wave Forces on a Circular Pile Due to Eddy Shedding written by Devidas Datatraia Bidde and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ocean waves exert 'lift' (i.e., transverse) forces on piles under some circumstances in addition to the longitudinal forces. The lift forces are related to the formation and shedding of eddies. The report describes the results of a hydraulic laboratory study to establish the conditions under which the lift forces achieve significant magnitude compared to longitudinal forces. The lift forces were found to be as great as 60% of the longitudinal forces. The Keulegan-Carpenter number is found to be a reasonable parameter to determine the regime in which eddies form, and to be related to the ratio of the lift to longitudinal forces. Eddies form in the 'lee' of a vertical cylindrical pile subject to water waves when the Keulegan-Carpenter number has a value of about 3. For higher Keulegan-Carpenter numbers two eddies are developed and shed and the lift force is more or less regular with a frequency twice the frequency of the waves. For further increase in the Keulegan-Carpenter number turbulence develops and the lift forces show a random pattern. The ratio of the lift to the longitudinal forces appears to be at a maximum for a Keulegan-Carpenter number of about 15. Results of spectral anslyses of irregular waves and lift forces using Fast Fourier Transform techniques are presented. (Author).

Book Synopsis Simulation of Random, Nonlinear Wave Forces on a Circular Cylindrical Pile by : Hang Tuah
Download or read book Simulation of Random, Nonlinear Wave Forces on a Circular Cylindrical Pile written by Hang Tuah and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two types of linear random wave simulation methods are investigated; viz., (1) Deterministic Spectral Amplitude (DSA) and (2) Nondeterministic Spectral Amplitude (NSA). These linear simulations are extended to second-order in a perturbation expansion in the frequency domain by utilizing a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT). The nonlinear interaction matrix for waves in shallow-, intermediate-, and deep-water is also investigated. In shallow water, the nonlinear interaction matrix is not as well-behaved as it is in intermediate- and deep-water. The nonlinear interaction matrix is symmetrical with respect to its frequency indices. The value of this nonlinear interaction matrix may, therefore, be calculated only from two octants in the w[subscript m]-w[subscript n] in plane. Water particle kinematics are computed from the simulated sea surface by three different Transfer Functions; viz., (1) Linear Frequency Domain (LFD), (2) Hybrid Frequency Domain (HFD), (3) Ncnlinear Frequency Domain (NFD). Wave pressure forces on a circular cylindrical pile are computed at approximately the mid-depth location in the time domain by the Morrison equation using the Dean and Aagaard coefficients. The statistics of these wave pressure forces are derived by the moment generating function approach by assuming that the initial sea surfaces are linear and Gaussian. The statistics of these simulated sea surfaces and wave pressure forces are compared with those recorded during Hurricane Carla (1961) in the Gulf of Mexico. In the sea surface simulation, the NSA method gives better agreement with the statistics from the measured sea surfaces than the DSA method does. However, there is no conclusion that can be drawn out the wave forces which are simulated from only one record (WPII No. 6887).

Book Synopsis Hydrodynamics Around Cylindrical Strucures by : B. Mutlu Sumer
Download or read book Hydrodynamics Around Cylindrical Strucures written by B. Mutlu Sumer and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2006 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the subject of wave/current flow around a cylinder, the forces induced on the cylinder by the flow, and the vibration pattern of slender structures in a marine environment. The primary aim of the book is to describe the flow pattern and the resulting load which develops when waves or current meet a cylinder. Special attention is paid to circular cylinder. The development in the forces is related to the various flow patterns and is discussed in detail. Regular as well as irregular waves are considered, and special cases like wall proximities (pipelines) are also investigated. Sample Chapter(s). Chapter 1: Flow around a cylinder in steady current (1,262 KB). Contents: Flow Around a Cylinder in Steady Current; Forces on a Cylinder in Steady Current; Flow Around a Cylinder in Oscillatory Flows; Forces on a Cylinder in Regular Waves; Mathematical and Numerical Treatment of Flow Around a Cylinder; Diffraction Effect. Forces on Large Bodies; Forces on a Cylinder in Irregular Waves; Flow-Induced Vibrations of a Free Cylinder in Steady Currents; Flow-Induced Vibrations of a Free Cylinder in Waves; Vibrations of Marine Pipelines; Mathematical Modelling of Flow-Induced Vibrations. Readership: PhD and MSc students with some experience in basic fluid mechanics, and consulting companies in the areas of marine, offshore, coastal and civil engineering.
Book Synopsis Horizontal Forces Due to Waves Acting on Large Vertical Cylinders in Deep Water by : E. R. Johnson
Download or read book Horizontal Forces Due to Waves Acting on Large Vertical Cylinders in Deep Water written by E. R. Johnson and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The special case of horizontal wave forces on large vertical cylinders in deep water is considered. The typical application for such a case is the calculation of horizontal forces on column-stabilized floating ocean platforms. Existing literature discussing horizontal wave forces on cylinders does not generally agree on how to predict these forces. Since for large-diameter cylinders in deep water the maximum force is completely inertial, the problem of deriving a solution is considerably simplified. In this study, an expression for the maximum horizontal wave force on large-diameter circular cylinders mounted vertically in deep water has been analytically derived. Experimental model studies were also conducted and the resulting measured forces are compared to predicted forces. An example of how to predict horizontal wave forces using the methods of the report is given. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1977, Contact and Conflicthas remained an important book, which has inspired numerous scholars to examine further the relationships between the Indians and the Europeans -- fur traders as well as settlers. For this edition, Robin Fisher has written a new introduction in which he surveys the literature since 1977 and comments on any new insights into these relationships. Fisher contends that the fur trade had originally brought minimal cultural change to the Indians. In 1858 it essentially came to an end, and with the beginning of white settlement, there was a fundamental change in the relationship between Indians and Europeans. What had been a reciprocal system between the two civilizations became a pattern of white dominance. He shows that while the Indians had been able to adjust gradually to the changes introduced by the traders in the contact period, they lost control of their culture under the impact of colonization.
