We see a mountain and want to move it to carve out a path for ourselves. We see a river and want to tame it so that it irrigates our fields. We see a star and want to fly to its planets to secure a future for our progeny. For all this, we need a genie who will do our bidding at a flip of our fingers. Energy is such a genie. Modern humans need energy and lots of it to live a life of comfort. In fact, the quality of life in different regions of the world can be directly correlated with the per capita use of energy [1.1–1.5]. In this regard, the human development index (HDI) of various countries based on various reports by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) [1.6] (Fig. 1.1), which is a parameter measuring the quality of life in a given part of the world, is directly determined by the amount of per capita electricity consumption. Most of the developing world (~5 billion people) is crawling up the UN curve of HDI versus per capita electricity consumption, from abysmally low values of today towards the average of the whole world and eventually towards the average of the developed world. This translates into a massive energy hunger for the globe as a whole. It has been estimated that by the year 2050, the global electricity demand will go up by a factor of up to 3 in a high growth scenario [1.7–1.9]. The requirements beyond 2050 go up even higher.

Book Synopsis Radio Frequency Power Plasmas by : Stephen J. Wukitch
Download or read book Radio Frequency Power Plasmas written by Stephen J. Wukitch and published by American Institute of Physics. This book was released on 2005-10-21 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In these proceedings of the April 2005 conference participants describe their current research in the theories, computations, and applications of radio frequency power in plasmas for fusion, space propulsion and material processing. Many of the papers describe solutions in tokamak geometries where phenomena to be modeled ranged from mm to tens of centimeters and self-consistent models of energetic particles and waves, with about half the papers describing work in ion cyclotron range of frequencies (ICRF). Other topics include lower hybrid ranges of frequencies, electron Bernstein ranges of frequencies, electron cyclotron ranges of frequencies and RF plasma applications. Book Synopsis Energetic Particles in Tokamak Plasmas by : Sergei Sharapov
Download or read book Energetic Particles in Tokamak Plasmas written by Sergei Sharapov and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-04-02 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of energetic particles in magnetic fusion plasmas is key to the development of next-generation "burning" plasma fusion experiments, such as the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) and the Demonstration Power Station (DEMO). This book provides a comprehensive introduction and analysis of the experimental data on how fast ions behave in fusion-grade plasmas, featuring the latest ground-breaking results from world-leading machines such as the Joint European Torus (JET) and the Mega Ampere Spherical Tokamak (MAST). It also details Alfvenic instabilities, driven by energetic ions, which can cause enhanced transport of energetic ions. MHD spectroscopy of plasma via observed Alfvenic waves called "Alfvén spectroscopy" is introduced and several applications are presented. This book will be of interest to graduate students, researchers, and academics studying fusion plasma physics. Features: Provides a comprehensive overview of the field in one cohesive text, with the main physics phenomena explained qualitatively first. Authored by an authority in the field, who draws on his extensive experience of working with energetic particles in tokamak plasmas. Is suitable for extrapolating energetic particle phenomena in fusion to other plasma types, such as solar and space plasmas.
Book Synopsis Kinetic Theory of Plasma Waves by : Marco Brambilla
Download or read book Kinetic Theory of Plasma Waves written by Marco Brambilla and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 658 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book deals with the propagation and absorption of high frequency waves in plasmas. The text collects in a structured and self-contained way the basic knowledge on the broad and varied behavior of plasma waves, adopting the microscopic kinetic description of the plasma as unifying principle. The internal coherence of the theory is explicitly stressed, and interesting physical phenomena peculiar to plasmas are discussed in detail, including collisionless damping of waves, the development of stochasticity in the interactions of charged particles with electromagnetic waves, and nonlinear interactions between waves. The most common and useful approximations used in solving practical problems are derived as special cases from the more general kinetic approach, thereby clarifying their meaning and domain of applicability. This exposition should be useful to plasma physicists both as an introduction and a reference to this field of research.
