Book excerpt: Excerpt from Water Waves Produced by Explosions In our analysis we assume that the surface elevation n and the accompanying water motion, are symmetric about an axis through the center of the disturbance. If r denotes distance from this axis and t denotes time then we may write n We also assume that the water is of finite uniform depth, which we denote by h and that the linear theory of surface waves is applicable. Both of these assumptions will be analysed in a later report. In the next two sections we present and discuss the results of our analyses for the cases of initial impulse and initial displacement respectively. Typical graphs of the wave height as a function of r and of t are included. Then in section IV these resulte are applied to the problem of wave production by explosions. The mathematical analysis is contained in an appendix. A list of references to previous work on this subject is appended. Of the previous work the earliest, that of Poisson is the most relevant. However he considers water of infinite depth. Furthermore he obtains detailed results only for paraboloidal and ellipsoidal depressions. Burnside [h] also considers infinite depth, but only twodimensional motion. He obtains a series for the wave motion produced by an initial elevation of very spe01al shape. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Waves of the Sea, and Other Water Waves These things, and others of a like nature, I have watched for many years, and I have set down in this book what I have been able to add to former knowledge. I have written to inform the mind, not to stir the imagination. The appearances are familiar and recurrent, and I do not attempt to recall them by much word-painting, but the precise observation and measurement of waves, and the discovery of the mode of their production, are matters of difficulty, and to these I have given myself. My investigations on water waves have been prosecuted during the last fifteen years. They have been made in many parts of the world, which I have visited principally for the study of surface waves of different kinds. The chief results as far as they, relate to water waves are contained in this volume, which contains also a critical examination of observations made by a number of seamen and others upon the size and speed of ocean waves. Most of Part relating. To tidal bores and other waves in rivers, was published in the Geographical Journal and in Engineering in 1906, but Parts I. And II., which relate to waves of the sea, are new, and were written in I 909-1 0. Side by side with the observations of water waves, I have during the same period since I 89 5) been investigating the progressive transverse ridges which are produced in sand and snow by the action of water or wind, and I have made observations upon earthquakes and other wave phenomena which come within the province of physical geography. These I intend to publish later. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It is probable that in prehistoric times there were some terrific submarine volcanic explosions which created water waves of such force that they traveled enormous distances; and it is even possible that some of these waves were propagated back to the point of disturbance after collision at the antipodal point. This is just the be havior which certain atmospheric waves exhibited during the eruption of Krakatoa, the most gigantic volcanic action known to man. It presents the theoretical foundations and experimental results of the generation and propagation of impulsively generated waves resulting from underwater explosions. Many of the theories and concepts presented herein are applicable to other types of water waves, in particular, tsunamis and waves generated by the fall of a meteorite. Linear and nonlinear theories, as well as experimental calibrations, are presented for cases of deep and shallow water explosions. Propagation of transient waves on dissipative, nonuniform bathymetries together with laboratory simulations are analyzed and discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spherical Waves and Shocks Two theories of the propagation of Spherical shocks, having a similar approach, have been.put forward independently. One theory was developed by Kirkwood and Bethe in l9u2, but then it was contained in a confidential report, and the first published account appeared (without full details) in l9u8 in R. H. Cole's book Underwater explosiomp. Unaware of this work, the author obtained a theory, early in 1951, which a recent inwestigation has shown to have much in common with the kirkwood-bethe theory. Kirkwood and Bethe considered the problem of an explosion in water and found how the head shock propagates; it is relevant to note here that their results are intended to hold true (for water) even if the shock is not weak. On the other hand, the author found a theory for the propagation of 335 spherical shocks (in any medium) but obtained a description of the whole flow; for example, later shocks which occur in addition to the head shock were predicted and determined. Thus the theories overlap in that they both apply to a weak head shock; the kirkwood-bethe theory treats, in addition, a non-weak head shock in water (an addition of much practical value), whilst the author's theory determines, in addition, the later flows and additional shocks.
