Book excerpt: Hydrophobic Surfaces reviews the studies of solid/liquid interfaces by measurements of heats of immersion, focusing on the important phenomena controlling liquid/solid interactions. This book discusses the effect of dipole moment, hydrogen-bonding, and acidic or basic character of liquid, including the role of adsorbable species. The nature of the solid surface, electric field, acidic or basic properties, and ability to form hydrogen bonds are likewise elaborated in detail. This text also stresses that polytetrafluoroethylene surfaces have a few hydrophilic sites that carbon blacks vary widely and significantly in the relative number of hydrophobic and hydrophilic sites. This publication is beneficial to students and researchers conducting work on hydrophobic solid/liquid interfaces.

Book excerpt: Surface Properties of Electronic Materials is the fifth volume of the series, The Chemical Physics of Solid Surfaces and Heterogeneous Catalysis. This volume indicates the present state of some basic properties of semiconductor surfaces. Chapter one summarizes the general problems in electronic materials and the areas affected by the surface science methods. The next two chapters illustrate the existing perception of the electronic and structural properties of elemental and compound semiconductor surfaces. This volume also deals with the properties of adsorption of semiconductors relating to both relevant gas phase species and metals. Chapters four to six of this volume explore compound semiconductors and elemental semiconductors. The remaining chapters of this volume explore the adsorption of metals on elemental semiconductors; aspects of growth kinetics and dynamics involved in molecular beam epitaxy; molecular beam epitaxy of silicon; insulators; and metastable phases. The last chapter covers the surface chemistry of dry etching processes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to the proposed hypothesis on the nature of water-vapor sorption on active charcoal there takes place, in the region before the sharp rise of the S-shaped isotherm, a monomolecular adsorption of water vapor. The formation of a condensed adsorption-film brings about wetting, and causes the micropores of the charcoal to fill up through capillary condensation. The equilibrium pressure p in volume, corresponding to the two-dimensional saturated vapor pressure of the adsorption-film, is dependent on the differential heat of adsorption, and decreases for the more active surface-areas, the fine pores of the charcoal. The non-uniformity of the charcoal surface as regards adsorption leads to a progressive filling-up of micropores of greater and greater size and over a relatively narrow range of pressures. An effect qualitatively similar to the progressive activation of t he charcoal may be obtained by introducing into the charcoal a small quantity of a vapor which adsorbs well and fills up the more active portions of the surface of the charcoal, that is, the small-pore part of the volume.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the first ever comprehensive survey of a new family of nanocomposite sorbents “salt in porous matrix” (CSPMs). These composites have recently been developed for selective sorption of water, alcohols, ammonia, and carbon dioxide. They owe their origin to the catchy idea of target-oriented tailoring of materials with predetermined adsorption properties harmonized with a particular adsorption process. The book develops the concept of target-oriented synthesis and suggests tools for tailoring new adsorbent materials adapted to multiple practical applications. It describes properties of approximately 50 new CSPMs of water, alcohols, ammonia, and carbon dioxide, including the data obtained in the author’s laboratory and literature available by the end of 2018. These data can be used for engineering calculations and analysis of practical applications. The book also discusses potential applications of these sorbents for storage and transformation of low-temperature heat, gas drying, maintenance of relative humidity in museums, and regeneration of heat and moisture in ventilation systems.

Book excerpt: This volume is intended to provide the reader with a breadth of understanding regarding the many challenges faced with the formulation of poorly water-soluble drugs as well as in-depth knowledge in the critical areas of development with these compounds. Further, this book is designed to provide practical guidance for overcoming formulation challenges toward the end goal of improving drug therapies with poorly water-soluble drugs. Enhancing solubility via formulation intervention is a unique opportunity in which formulation scientists can enable drug therapies by creating viable medicines from seemingly undeliverable molecules. With the ever increasing number of poorly water-soluble compounds entering development, the role of the formulation scientist is growing in importance. Also, knowledge of the advanced analytical, formulation, and process technologies as well as specific regulatory considerations related to the formulation of these compounds is increasing in value. Ideally, this book will serve as a useful tool in the education of current and future generations of scientists, and in this context contribute toward providing patients with new and better medicines.
