Download or read book A Wailing of a Town written by Craig Ibarra and published by . This book was released on 2015-04-01 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a detailed oral history of early San Pedro punk, from 1977 to 1985, told through countless interviews with artists, locals and fans, all of whom lived there or lived through it. Topics include iconic gigs by bands the Minutemen, Black Flag, the Descendents, and lesser-known but highly original and fascinating artists; personal interviews with the major players, friends and families; and descriptions of the nightlife haunts and hangouts, all told through never-before-published thoughts, memories, and opinions from that seminal time. The interviews are woven together in a firsthand narrative of this innovative music and arts scene, often dismissed as too remote, too artsy, and too experimental for the prevailing hardcore and rock scenes of the time. Years later, this book provides fascinating details of the iconic scene now sought after by music and history fans and those interested in the hidden gems of Los Angeles culture of the '70s and '80s.

Book Synopsis Fairness and Justice in Environmental Decision Making by : Catherine Gross
Download or read book Fairness and Justice in Environmental Decision Making written by Catherine Gross and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-01-10 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By crossing disciplinary boundaries, this book uniquely connects theories of justice with people's lived experience within social conflicts over resource sharing. It shows why some conflicts, such as local opposition to wind farms and water disputes, have become intractable social problems in many countries of the world. It shows the power of injustice in generating opposition to decisions. The book answers the question: why are the results of many government initiatives and policies not accepted by those affected? Focusing on two social conflicts over water sharing in Australia to show why fairness and justice are important in decision-making, the book shows how these conflicts are typical of water sharing and other natural resource conflicts experienced in many countries around the world, particularly in the context of climate change. It tells the stories of these conflicts from the perspectives of those involved. These practically-based findings are then related back to ideas and constructs of justice from disciplines such as social psychology, political philosophy and jurisprudence. With a strong practical focus, this book offers readers an opportunity to develop a deep understanding of fairness and justice in environmental decision-making. It opens up a wealth of fairness and justice ideas for decision-makers, practitioners, and researchers in natural resource management, environmental governance, community consultation, and sustainable development, as well as people in government and corporations who interface and consult with communities where natural resources are being used.

Book Synopsis Water Under the Bridge by : P. J. Heyman
Download or read book Water Under the Bridge written by P. J. Heyman and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-12-02 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is part one of the autobiography of Pamela Jean Heyman, a Kentish girl who grew up in the period before, during and after the Second World War and went on to migrate to Nigeria in search of interest and excitement. It covers the period from her birth in 1931 to the eve of her departure for Africa in 1956. Most of the story is set in and around Throwley, Ashford and Maidstone in the 1930s and 40s. The author, Jean, was born on her maternal Grandparents farm. Her Father left soon after the birth of her little brother. He remarried, and Jeans Mother moved to Maidstone where she took up a career in hairdressing, leaving Jean and her brother in the care of Grandma and Grandad and Auntie Kalla. In the tale that unfolds the old couple and their second daughter represents fortitude and loving stability, whereas Jeans Mother, on her frequent visits, represents glamour, laughter and colour. By the end of the 1930s Jeans Grandparents had to give up the farm due to ill health. Jean and her Brother went to live with their Mother and her new Husband and their half-Sister, Maureen. This period coincides with the outbreak of war and the beginning of its privations. The Authors life story serves as an evocative account of how country people lived in those days and how (not withstanding the trials and tribulations brought about by her Mothers third marriage), during and after the war she worked hard to improve her secretarial skills which enabled her to eventually obtain a position in the Federal Government of Nigeria in Lagos. Part two will recount this period.

Book excerpt: Emmie Dart was nearly forty years old and servant to old Canon James when Walter asked her to marry him. He was the Canon's son, younger than she was, and a gentleman - even though a rather dilettante drifter who had really done very little with his life. But Walter had a secret in his past that he asked Emmie to share with him - and she, in turn, told him of her harsh and cruel background that made her feel unworthy to be anyone's wife. In spite of everything the marriage worked. Walter became Station Master at the lazy, sundrenched little country station of Dymock. Emmie set about rearing her three children, all so different. As Walter and Emmie watched their children grow, marry, have children of their own, so three women began to dominate the family - Dorothy, who was proud, loyal, strong, and frequently extremely angry with the James family into which she had married, Kildie, illegitimate, manipulative, and causing constant strife and drama, and Holly, the third generation, whose loving spirit often held them all together. It was more than fifty years before Walter James's secret was revealed - a secret that nearly broke the family apart.

Book excerpt: River Williams is good at two things: swimming and conflict. Becoming the king of the underwater dominion his mermaid mother abandoned should be right up his alley. It is, until he learns what kind of mess his deposed uncle left for him to clean up. And with his little sister recently married and coronated in the family’s other ancestral territory, he feels has to be everywhere at once to help smooth the transitions of power. The absolute last thing he needs at the moment is to have to deal with his human ex. Since childhood, Aliah pictured herself settling down with a wealthy go-getter who could guarantee her a stable future. Her fling with fellow military brat River as a teen was the one relationship she stumbled into without premeditation. She had to outgrow him, but she could never forget him. She can’t. The same magic that allows River to hurl and shape water decided long ago that she would be his. Despite what the magic says, Aliah’s not prepared for the tumultuous world the Williams family now lives in, and River refuses to be one more stepping stone for Aliah’s upward climb. If she can’t convince him that her intentions are different than before, and if he can’t recognize the strength the extroverted socialite could bring to a healing kingdom, the two will live forever adrift, lacking the equilibrium both desperately need.

And it did not take Armand very long to realize that he had gotten himself ready-made family; one that he loved with all his heart, and one for whom he would have to find a better home than the bridge. Armand and the children's adventures around Paris -- complete with gypsies and a Santa Claus -- make a story which children will treasure.
