Book excerpt: A new technique for water tunnel flow visualization is based upon the use of a newly developed type of material--neutral-density, bi-liquid foams or 'polyaphrons'. These materials are small, spherical globules of one liqund encapsulated in a thin film of another liquid. It is now possible to make bi-liquid foams when the units are of micron or submircon size, and may be spherical or polyhedral depending upon the relative concentration of oil to water. They are easy to see and photograph in water and they can also be dyed to a variety of intense colors. In this two part study, polyaphrons were used for flow visualization in water tunnel tests of combustors. First, various formulations of the polyaphrons were made to optimize aphron size and density for water tunnel testing. Second, the best polyaphrons were used for flow visualization of real, prototype combustor model. Tests were conducted at 22.5 gpm. This corresponds to Re sub D=23,900, when D is the swirler diameter. Tests showed that polyaphron material proved easy to handle when injected through small tubes and the amount and ratio of injection was easy to control. No clogging of any kind was ever encountered. The pure material broke-up into clumps upon injection. A 50/50 mixture of water polyaphron eliminated clumping. Injection of polyaphrons was also directly compared with the more usual dye injection. Polyaphrons are ideal seeding material for Laser Doppler Velocimetry in water tunnels.

Book excerpt: Dual-view holographic movies were used to examine complex flows with full three-space and time resolution. This approach, which tracks the movement of small tracer particles in water, is termed a holocinematographic velocimeter (HCV). A small prototype of a new type water tunnel was used to demonstrate proof-of-concept for the HCV. After using a conventional flow visualization apparatus with a laser light sheet to illuminate tracer particles to evaluate flow quality of the prototype tunnel, as a simplified version of the HCV was employed to demonstrate the capabilities of the approach. Results indicate that a full-scale version of the water tunnel and a high performance version of the HCV should be able to check theoretical and numerical modeling of complex flows and examine the mechanisms operative in turbulent and vortex flow control concepts, providing an entirely unique instrument capable, for the first time, of simultaneous three-space and time measurements in turbulent flows.

Book excerpt: We demonstrate instantaneous flow visualization of the boundary layer region of a Mach 2.5 supersonic flow over a flat plate that is interacting with an impinging shock wave. Tests were performed in the Unitary Plan Wind Tunnel (UPWT) at NASA Langley Research Center. The technique is elastic light scattering using 10-nsec laser pulses at 532 nm. We emphasize that no seed material of any kind, including water (H2O), is purposely added to the flow. The scattered light comes from a residual impurity that normally exists in the flow medium after the air drying process. Thus, the technique described here differs from the traditional vapor-screen method, which is typically accomplished by the addition of extra H2O vapor to the airflow. The flow is visualized with a series of thin two-dimensional light sheets (oriented perpendicular to the streamwise direction) that are located at several positions downstream of the leading edge of the model. This geometry allows the direct observation of the unsteady flow structure in the spanwise dimension of the model and also allows the indirect observation of the boundary layer growth in the streamwise dimension.

Book excerpt: The Dynamic Devices and Solutions Lab at the University of Georgia (UGA) recently installed a high-speed water tunnel to conduct fluid-structure interaction (FSI) experiments. The tunnel is custom-designed to deliver uniform flow up to 10 m/s through a square test section. This work presents an overview of water tunnels, their primary components, and their functions. It details the design and fabrication of key components of the UGA water tunnel and provides justification for design decisions. It discusses instruments for measuring velocity and turbulence and for flow visualization. The qualification procedure and results are also described. Tunnel flow parameters were identified using a laser doppler anemometry system, and results show that the water tunnel generates uniform, laminar flow within the test section for flow speeds between 1 and 10 m/s, while also maintaining boundary layer thicknesses below 35 mm. Turbulence intensity values averaged 0.50% for flow outside the boundary layer.
