Book excerpt: Water Reuse: An International Survey of current practice, issues and needs examines water reuse practices around the world from different perspectives. The objective is to show how differently wastewater reuse is conceived and practised around the world as well as to present the varied needs and possibilities for reusing wastewater. In the first section water reuse practices around the world are described for regions having common water availability, reuse needs and social aspects. The second section refers to the “stakeholders” point of view. Each reuse purpose demands different water quality, not only to protect health and the environment but also to fulfil the requirements of the specific reuse. Reuses considered are agricultural, urban agriculture as a special case of the former, municipal and industrial. Alongside these uses, the indirect reuse for human consumption through aquifer recharge is also discussed. The third section deals with emerging and controversial topics. Ethical and economical dilemmas in the field are presented as a subject not frequently addressed in this field. The role of governments in respect of public policy in reuse is discussed as well as the different international criteria and standards for reusing wastewater. The importance of public acceptance and the way to properly handle it is also considered. The fourth section of the book presents contrasting case studies; typical situations in the developed world (Japan and Germany) are compared to those in developing countries (Pakistan and Brazil) for agricultural and industrial reuse. Indirect planned reuse for human consumption (Germany) is compared with an unplanned one (Mexico). The Windhoek, Namibia case study is presented to emphasize why if the direct reuse of wastewater for human consumption has been performed with success for more than 35 years it is still the only example of this type around the world. To illustrate the difficulties of having a common framework for regulating water reuse in several countries, the Mediterranean situation is described. Other case studies presented refer to the reuse situation in Israel, Spain, Cameroon, Nepal and Vietnam, these latter countries being located in water rich areas. This book will be an invaluable information source for all those concerned with water reuse including water utility managers, wastewater policy makers and water resources planners as well as researchers and students in environmental engineering, water resources planning and sanitary engineering. Book excerpt: Alternative water sources are expected to play a significant role in areas suffering water shortages. In many places waste water reuse is becoming a valuable component of sustainable water management practises. Substantial and practical information is needed to safely design, implement and operate waste water reuse schemes. The project AQUAREC Integrated concepts for reuse of upgraded wastewater was funded by the Fifth Framework Programme of the European Commission. Its major aim was to investigate and develop concepts and methodologies supporting rational and knowledge-based waste water reuse strategies. This publication presents practical information on waste water reuse concepts based on actual and proved management and operational practises. A broad approach has been considered by addressing institutional, organisational, legal, economics, financial, social and environmental issues together with technological aspects.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In communities all around the world, water supplies are coming under increasing pressure as population growth, climate change, pollution, and changes in land use affect water quantity and quality. To address existing and anticipated water shortages, many communities are working to increase water conservation and are seeking alternative sources of water. Water reuse- the sue of treated wastewater, or "reclaimed" water, for beneficial purposes such as drinking, irrigation, or industrial uses- is one option that has helped some communities significantly expand their water supplies. Understanding Water Reuse summarizes the main findings of the National Research Council report Water Reuse: Expanding the Nation's Water Supply Through Reuse of Municipal Wastewater. The report provides an overview of the options and outlook for water reuse in the United States, discusses water treatment technologies and potential uses of reclaimed water, and presents a new analysis that compares the risks of drinking reclaimed water to those of drinking water from traditional sources.

Book excerpt: Expanding water reuse-the use of treated wastewater for beneficial purposes including irrigation, industrial uses, and drinking water augmentation-could significantly increase the nation's total available water resources. Water Reuse presents a portfolio of treatment options available to mitigate water quality issues in reclaimed water along with new analysis suggesting that the risk of exposure to certain microbial and chemical contaminants from drinking reclaimed water does not appear to be any higher than the risk experienced in at least some current drinking water treatment systems, and may be orders of magnitude lower. This report recommends adjustments to the federal regulatory framework that could enhance public health protection for both planned and unplanned (or de facto) reuse and increase public confidence in water reuse.

Book excerpt: Water Renovation and Reuse focuses on the general principles and technological developments of water reuse and renovation. This book provides documented case studies of reuse practices and experiences throughout the world. Organized into two parts encompassing 15 chapters, this book starts with an overview of the different aspects of the problem to conserve, reuse, and recycle the limited water resources. This text proceeds to discuss the initial phase of water renovation and reuse, which is based on the conservationists' concept that society's wastes should be utilized and conserved to preserve the fertility of the soil. Other chapters explore the second phase of water renovation and reuse, which is motivated by the need to conserve and reuse water in arid areas. This book discusses as well the policy of zero pollution in the United States, which led to programs of land disposal. This book is intended for biologists, engineers, chemists, agronomists, public health officers, and water resources authorities.

However, scarcity of water currently faced in many regions of the world is caused by two reasons. First, its availability in time and space is not equally distributed. Thus there is problem of water in the wrong place, or at the wrong time and in wrong quantities. Second, while the population growth and expanded industrial activities are increasing demands on available water resources, they also jeopardize the availability of freshwater in adequate quantities by discharge of pollutants into freshwater sources. It is at times like these, when the rising curve of water demand intersects the fluctuating curve of water availability, recycle and reuse of wastewater is seriously considered. Wastewater recycling, reuse and reclamation have been, now, accepted as appropriate ways to conserve water resources as well as to contain polluted waters from contaminating other available clean water sources. This book gives a comprehensive review on water quantity and quality, simple water supply and sanitation systems, and leads to domestic, agricultural and industrial water reuse. Thus, it will provide useful information not only to technologists but also for planners, managers, and NGOs involved in the water sector. The contribution to the book comes from a broad pool of experts, working on technology, policy, health, and economy aspects of water management. Involvement of both academics and industry personnel from developing and developed countries makes this contribution broader and useable for a wide readership.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The general public’s aversion to drinking treated wastewater is evident, rooted in the reluctance to accept a direct pipe-to-pipe connection, for example, from a toilet to a drinking water tap. Despite advancements in treating black water from sewage sources to meet drinking water standards, there persists a general hesitancy to fully accept this possibility or understand the science behind it. The Science of Water Reuse explains how technology can sufficiently purify reclaimed water to potable water quality—even surpassing the cleanliness of the water available from conventional taps. It addresses the significant gap in the existing literature on water reuse, focusing particularly on the varied applications of reused or reclaimed water within municipal and agricultural contexts, with a specific emphasis on issues and technologies related to both direct and indirect potable water reuse. It serves as a valuable resource for policymakers, municipal planners, environmental engineering professionals, as well as undergraduate and graduate students. Bridges the gap between technical details and public comprehension, making the complex subject of water reuse accessible and relevant. Provides a comprehensive understanding of water reuse, including case studies for practical application. Contributes to changing public attitudes, making reclaimed water an acceptable source for potable use.
