Book excerpt: A large part of the global population lives in arid lands which have low rainfall and often lack the water required for sustainable population and economic growth. This book presents a comprehensive description of the hydrogeology and hydrologic processes at work in arid lands. It describes the techniques that can be used to assess and manage the water resources of these areas with an emphasis on groundwater resources, including recent advances in hydrologic evaluation and the differences between how aquifer systems behave in arid lands versus more humid areas. Water management techniques are described and summarized to show how a more comprehensive approach to water management is required in these areas, including the need to be aware of cultural sensitivities and conditions unique to many arid regions. The integration of existing resources with the addition of new water sources, such as desalination of brackish water and seawater, along with reusing treated wastewater, will be required to meet future water supply needs. Also, changing climatic conditions will force water management systems to be more robust so that future water supply demands can be met as droughts become more intense and rainfall events become more intense. A range of water management techniques are described and discussed in order to illustrate the methods for integrating these measures within the context of arid lands conditions.

Book Synopsis Water and Arid Lands of the Western United States by : Mohamed T. El-Ashry

This book was released on 2009-08-06 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite impressive innovations by some states, western water laws and institutions now in place were designed chiefly for an earlier era and have not adapted to the new demands and stresses on water resources. In Water and the Arid Lands of the Western United States the authors explore the nature of water demands in the agricultural and municipal sectors and set forth prescriptions for the west to move away from its historical reliance on expensive supply-side projects and toward better management of existing supplies. Six cases studies by experts in the field illustrate specific examples of water management issues. Taking as foci the Central Valley of California, the High Plains of Texas, and the Upper Basin of the Colorado River, three of the case studies examine problems faced by the large urban areas of southern California; Tucson, Arizona; and Denver, Colorado. A concluding chapter suggests practical policy options and politically feasible institutional changes for maximizing the efficiency of water use and minimizing the conflict associated with the reallocation of limited water supplies.
Book Synopsis Water Resources in the Arid Realm by : Clive Agnew
Download or read book Water Resources in the Arid Realm written by Clive Agnew and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-04-03 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1992, this book dispels some of the myths that surround water resource problems of arid lands and the notion that there are simple ‘once and for all’ solutions. Population growth, industrialization, environmental mismanagement and land degradation have led to droughts, poverty and famine with the result that the need for space, food and key natural resources such as water has become the most critical issue in global development. Nowhere is this crisis more apparent than in arid lands, where water resources provide the key to economic and environmental development. The authors argue that as the arid land environment is highly variable the key to success is flexibility. The book is divided into four sections, dealing with the geography of the arid realm; the water resource problems they face: the methods available for enhancing water supplies and finally, management of this resource. The book will be of use to undergraduate and postgraduate student and for those actively engaged in the development of arid land water resources.

Book excerpt: The international conference Arid Lands: Today and Tomorrow drew more than 400 participants from over 3 S countries to Tucson, Arizona, for one week in October of 19 8 S. The diversity of presenters, disciplines and subject matters addressed contributed to an interesting and informative conference. The papers presented in this volume represent the efforts of scientists and other individuals who, through their various disciplines, are addressing the problems of and opportunities presented by the arid lands of the world. A committee of five scientists reviewed for substance. relevance and their contribution to the conference the 284 abstracts that were submitted. They selected 146 for presentation at the conference and of those papers presented, 128 were received for inclusion in the proceedings.
Book Synopsis The Future of Arid Lands-Revisited by : Charles F. Hutchinson

This book was released on 2007-12-07 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Future of Arid Lands, edited by Gilbert White and published in 1956, comprised papers delivered at the "International Arid Lands Meetings" held in New Mexico in 1955. At these meetings, experts considered the major issues then confronting the world’s arid lands and developed a research agenda to address these issues. This book reexamines this earlier work and explores changes in the science and management of arid lands over the past 50 years within their historical contexts.
Book Synopsis Water Management, Purificaton, and Conservation in Arid Climates by : Mattheus F. A. Goosen

This book was released on 2000-01-05 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This three volume series presents a broad and integrated approach to water management, purification, and conservation in arid climates. Volume one includes an introductory chapter on water problems and water resources in arid climates followed by specific chapters covering various aspects of water management. Volumes two and three deal with water purification and water conservation, respectively. Many textbooks on water issues normally deal with only one of these areas. This series covers all three areas with an emphasis on the problems faced by arid regions. The three volume series will appeal to industry specialists in desalination and wastewater treatment, irrigation engineers, graduate and undergraduate students in hydrology, water management and conservation professionals, government personnel involved in water resources development, decision makers, environmentalists, employees of the petrochemical industry, and individuals wishing to specialize in water management, purification and conservation.
