Book excerpt: Pulp and Paper Industry: Emerging Waste Water Treatment Technologies is the first book which comprehensively reviews this topic. Over the past decade, pulp and paper companies have continued to focus on minimizing fresh water use and effluent discharges as part of their move towards sustainable operating practices. Three stages—basic conservation, water reuse and water recycling—provide a systematic approach to water resource management. Implementing these stages requires increased financial investment and better utilization of water resources. The ultimate goal for pulp and paper companies is to have effluent-free factories with no negative environmental impact. The traditional water treatment technologies that are used in paper mills are not able to remove recalcitrant contaminants. Therefore, advanced water treatment technologies are being included in industrial wastewater treatment chains aiming to either improve water biodegradability or its final quality. This book discusses various measures being adopted by the pulp and paper industry to reduce water consumption and treatment techniques to treat wastewater to recover it for reuse. The book also examines the emerging technologies for treatment of effluents and presents examples of full-scale installations. Provides thorough and in-depth coverage of advanced treatment technologies which will benefit the industry personnel, pulp manufacturers, researchers and advanced students Presents new treatment strategies to improve water reuse and fulfill the legislation in force regarding wastewater discharge Presents viable solutions for pulp and paper manufacturers in terms of wastewater treatment Presents examples of full-scale installations to help motivate mill personnel to incorporate new technologies

Book excerpt: Industrial Environmental Performance Metrics is a corporate-focused analysis that brings clarity and practicality to the complex issues of environmental metrics in industry. The book examines the metrics implications to businesses as their responsibilities expand beyond the factory gateâ€"upstream to suppliers and downstream to products and services. It examines implications that arise from greater demand for comparability of metrics among businesses by the investment community and environmental interest groups. The controversy over what sustainable development means for businesses is also addressed. Industrial Environmental Performance Metrics identifies the most useful metrics based on case studies from four industriesâ€"automotive, chemical, electronics, and pulp and paperâ€"and includes specific corporate examples. It contains goals and recommendations for public and private sector players interested in encouraging the broader use of metrics to improve industrial environmental performance and those interested in addressing the tough issues of prioritization, weighting of metrics for meaningful comparability, and the longer term metrics needs presented by sustainable development.

Book excerpt: This book features in-depth and thorough coverage of Minimum Impact Mill Technologies which can meet the environmental challenges of the pulp and paper industry and also discusses Mills and Fiberlines that encompass “State-of-the-Art” technology and management practices. The minimum impact mill does not mean "zero effluent", nor is it exclusive to one bleaching concept. It is a much bigger concept which means that significant progress must be made in the following areas: Water Management, Internal Chemical Management, Energy Management, Control and Discharge of Non-Process Elements and Removal of Hazardous Pollutants. At the moment, there is no bleached kraft pulp mill operating with zero effluent. With the rise in environmental awareness due to the lobbying by environmental organizations and with increased government regulation there is now a trend towards sustainability in the pulp and paper industry. Sustainable pulp and paper manufacturing requires a holistic view of the manufacturing process. During the last decade, there have been revolutionary technical developments in pulping, bleaching and chemical recovery technology. These developments have made it possible to further reduce loads in effluents and airborne emissions. Thus, there has been a strong progress towards minimum impact mills in the pulp and paper industry. The minimum-impact mill is a holistic manufacturing concept that encompasses environmental management systems, compliance with environmental laws and regulations and manufacturing technologies.

Book excerpt: Nearly three years ago, world leaders agreed to the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – the central framework for guiding development policies throughout the world. This edition of The State of the World’s Forests is aimed at enhancing our understanding of how forests and their sustainable management contribute to achieving several of the SDGs. Time is running out for the world’s forests: we need to work across sectors, bring stakeholders together, and take urgent action. The State of the World’s Forests 2018 identifies actions that can be taken to increase the contributions of forests and trees that are necessary to accelerate progress towards the SDGs. It is now critical that steps be taken to work more effectively with the private sector, and the informal forest sector must be transformed in order to bring broader economic, social and environmental benefits. Seventy years ago, when FAO completed its first assessment of the world’s forest resources, the major concern was whether there would be enough timber to supply global demand; now we recognize the greater global relevance of our forests and trees. For the first time, The State of the World’s Forests 2018 provides an assessment of the contribution of forests and trees to our landscapes and livelihoods. The purpose of this publication is to provide a much wider audience with an understanding of why forests and trees matter for people, the planet and posterity.

Book excerpt: System water recirculation needs to be given the highest priority whenever and wherever possible by the industries. This means that the conventional wisdom of end-of- pipe treatment for pollutants discharge may not be sufficient. Additional in-plant water conservation efforts are becoming necessary to reduce the volume of effluents discharged and minimize solid waste for disposal. The development of process integration technique has been one of the most significant advances in waste minimisation in the past decades. Via in-plant material reuse/recycle, both raw material consumption and waste generation are reduced significantly. The book discusses methods for waste water recycling in the process, using water pinch technique by giving actual industrial example. Process integration without and with treatment of paper mill effluent is discussed in details by Authors. In addition saving in terms of money, by reduction of pollution discharge and fresh water consumption is also analyzed. This book will be useful for process engineers, environmental engineers, students, researchers, consultants, managers and other professionals working in the water recycling field.

This book was released on 1985 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The production of paper is relatively energy-intensive: one ton of paper requires energy equivalent to about three quarters of a ton of oil in industrialized countries, and as much as 2-3 times this figure in developing countries. Although about one half of this energy requirement may be met by burning the waste products of the industry, the balance must be purchased. Faced with sharply rising energy costs in the 1970s, producers in the industrialized countries have shown that energy consumption in paper production can be substantially reduced, and that improving the efficiency of waste recovery can further decrease the requirement for purchased energy. The wide range of measures discussed in this paper include steps to improve internal energy efficiency through a variety of measures such as improved housekeeping, process modification, and water re-use, steps to improve waste utilization, and cogeneration. Preliminary analyses of the costs and benefits of such measures are included. The paper also describes the particular technical and other constraints which have so far tended to limit the introduction of similar energy-saving techniques in the pulp and paper industries of many developing countries.
