How and why this happened could not be assessed efficiently without developing a longitudinal and comparative analysis, such as the one in this book. Institutional arrangements for the provision and the use of water are peculiarly persistent as well as remarkably resilient: This makes them an ideal subject of an historical account. Not that history is worth writing about only when it treats immutable phenomena. On the contrary; its main purpose is to record changes and possibly explain them. But long-lasting continuity urges the scholar to venture into the remote past, since only there are to be discovered the initial causes and the deeper meanings of the institutions under scrutiny. Also, continuity makes the strength of path-dependency all the more evident and consequently underlines the weight of history.

Book excerpt: This data- and factbook contains state-of-the-art information on the environmental aspects of 2,500 chemicals currently used in the textile industry worldwide. The authors have worked closely with industrial practitioners and managers of textile plants to ensure that only state-of-the-art science and technology are included. The texts preceding the extended tables present comprehensive overviews of the processes presently in use, as well as of important and relevant governmental regulations. The data sheet for each chemical spans carefully selected, relevant environmental and production-related data. In addition, textile engineers and specialists involved in the risk assessment and control of these chemicals will find that the overviews given on each chemical, its field of application and its function in production processes make this volume a valuable tool for their frequent reference.

Book excerpt: The International Gothenburg Symposia on Chemical Treatment have proven to be a unique platform for the exchange of ideas between theory and practice. They bring together administrators, engineers and scientists, who are concerned with water purification and wastewater treatment through precipitation, coagulation and subsequent solid/liquid separation. This volume contains the proceedings of the 3rd Symposium, focussing on Pretreatment. Pretreatment is understood as the scene total of all measures taken at the pollutant source to protect water supply, the sewerage system, the central treatment plant, and the aqueous environment. It is, where applicable, the most efficient measure in ecological and economic respects. The contributions of this third volume address questions of surveillance, automation and remote control of installations as well as the principles of legal, administrative and economic measures for regulations within the context of pretreatment. Special attention is given to the possibilities and limits of pretreatment of industrial discharges. Again it is the editors'privilege to acknowledge the invaluable help from the authors of this book. It is the editors' hope that they might convey the significance and potential of pretreatment in water supply, in industrial waste management and in municipal wastewater treatment and sludge handling.

This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 866 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental Law for Practitioners is an invaluable, practice-related introduction to environmental law in Germany, written by specialist legal advisers with extensive experience in the practical application of environmental law. This wholly revised second edition takes account of recent developments in rapidly changing environmental legislation and case-law. It is essential reading for foreign investors as well as providing swift, ready access to legal provisions and terms in both German and English. The book comprises an English description of environmental law in Germany and a bilingual compilation of the most important environmental statute texts. After a brief introduction to German environmental law and a short discussion of the legal bases and principles, fundamental aspects of significant interest to foreign investors are examined. The regulation of environmentally relevant activities is explained in a clear, concise way. Responsibility for residual pollution is discussed in detail. The book also provides a clear overview of both environmental private law and environmental criminal law, focussing on new developments relevant to investors and outlining recent trends in environmental litigation. In addition, environmental levies and their practical application as a formative instrument of environmental policy are described. The relationship between environmental law and contract is also explored. Finally, the authors look at environmental management systems and access to environmental information. The bilingual statute texts make vital legislation on the pollution and protection of the environment available to advisers and investors alike.

Book excerpt: The object of the research work is the analysis of the multilevel protection of the human right to water and the current degree of implementation that it has received in international, European, and national law, comparing the Italian and German contexts from the constitutional law perspective. Given the absence of an express recognition of the human right to water, another research question concerns the examination of the mechanisms of multilevel protection of human rights, assessing whether the relationships between the different levels of protection can contribute to the realisation of this fundamental human right. The research analyses the main sources of law and jurisprudence of each examined context, to understand the legal basis for the recognition of the human right to water, considering both the necessary protection of environmental aspects, as well as social and economic ones, fundamental for its full realisation. The analysis of normative and jurisprudential sources is supported by the examination of the most relevant doctrine.

This book was released on 2016-04-24 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is clearly an urgent need worldwide to increase the share of renewable energy in the overall energy supply as rapidly as possible. With a well-developed and proven feasible technology, offshore wind power has come to the fore as the most promising means of achieving this goal. However, fragmented authorities and procedures may pose tremendous challenges to the development of an integrated legal framework for offshore wind and the complex installation and grid interconnections it requires. This book surveys and analyses the features essential for the development of such a framework, drawing on the experience of ten countries that have such schemes in place – France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy, Norway, the United States, Australia, China, Korea, and Taiwan. Discussing the impact of technological, economic, spatial, and market issues on the legal framework, eleven key policymakers in their respective countries contribute chapters that together reveal the contours of a strong and sound legal framework that serves to enable and facilitate the efficient application of policy initiatives and subsidies. Topics and issues raised and examined include the ways a sound legal framework addresses the following aspects of offshore wind power development: - license schemes; - construction of turbines; - infrastructure of grid, construction harbor, and vessels; - environmental health and safety regulations; and - loan and finance risk. The contributors show that a carefully planned mix of incentives and supplementary schemes is indispensable. The essays are drawn on the presentations and papers offered at the International Conference on a Comprehensive Legal Framework for the Development of Offshore Wind Power Around the World held in Taiwan in August 2016. As a major new contribution to the debate on the importance of a legal framework for offshore wind power and grid interconnections, this book will prove indispensable to lawyers, policymakers, officials, and academics concerned with the management of sea space to include the wind power necessary to achieve and sustain renewable energy goals.
